Chapter 5: The Photograph in the Window
I stared at the photograph until the image blurred.
My mother sat in a hospital bed, one hand pressed against her mouth.
And behind her, reflected in the glass, stood my father.
Not a memory.
Not a photograph from years ago.
He was alive.
He was standing behind her.
In a hospital.
This morning.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What is it?""
I handed him my phone.
His face changed.
Sarah saw the screen over his shoulder.
She made a sound I had never heard from another human being.
"No.""
Richard took one look at the photograph and swore under his breath.
I turned toward him.
"You knew.""
He didn't answer.
"You knew my father was alive.""
Richard's silence was no longer mysterious.
It was confirmation.
I walked straight toward him.
"Where is he?""
"Emma—"
"Where is my father?""
Richard looked at the photograph again.
"Your father is not who you think he is.""
I laughed.
The sound came out sharp and broken.
"That sentence is getting old.""
Daniel moved between us.
"Tell her.""
Richard's eyes hardened.
"You have no idea what you're asking.""
"I am asking where my father is.""
"He'll come to you.""
"When?""
Richard looked at his watch.
"Soon.""
I stared at him.
"How soon?""
He didn't answer.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
*8 minutes.*
I showed it to Daniel.
"What happens in eight minutes?""
He looked at Sarah.
She was already shaking her head.
"I don't know.""
"You do.""
"I don't.""
"Sarah.""
She pressed both hands over her face.
Then she whispered, "They're going to release the files.""
"What files?""
"Everything.""
"Everything about what?""
"Your father.""
I stared at her.
"What did he do?""
Sarah looked at Lucas.
Then at me.
"He wasn't protecting you.""
She swallowed.
"He was protecting what you carried.""
I frowned.
"What I carried?""
"Your DNA.""
The room went silent.
I looked down at the medical form Richard had given me.
*Transfer genetic material immediately.*
"What does that mean?""
Sarah shook her head.
"I don't know exactly.""
Richard interrupted.
"You know enough.""
She turned toward him.
"Tell her.""
"No.""
"You owe her.""
"I owe her nothing.""
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"You've taken everything from her.""
Richard's face tightened.
"Be careful.""
"Or what?""
Sarah stepped closer.
"You'll make another woman disappear?""
Daniel looked at his father.
"Stop threatening her.""
Richard turned to him.
"Do you have any idea what your mother did to keep you alive?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"My mother?""
"She knew.""
"She knew what?""
Richard hesitated.
Then he said, "Your mother helped your father move the child.""
Daniel looked at Lucas.
"What child?""
Richard pointed toward him.
"Lucas.""
Daniel's jaw dropped.
"Lucas wasn't supposed to survive.""
The boy lifted his head.
"What?""
Daniel immediately crouched beside him.
"Don't listen.""
But Lucas had already heard.
His little face went pale.
"Grandpa said I was special.""
Richard looked away.
I felt sick.
"Why was Lucas in danger?""
Richard finally answered.
"Because he wasn't supposed to exist.""
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
"He was a mistake your father couldn't erase.""
I stared at Lucas.
He was holding the strap of his backpack with both hands.
Six years old.
Small.
Confused.
And surrounded by adults who had built their lives around keeping secrets from him.
I crouched beside him.
"Lucas.""
He looked at me.
"Are you scared?""
He nodded.
"Me too.""
That made him smile faintly.
I touched his shoulder.
"Do you know where your mother met Daniel?""
He looked at Sarah.
"At the hospital.""
Daniel looked at Sarah sharply.
"You never told me that.""
"I was trying to keep you alive.""
"You lied to me.""
"I lied to everyone.""
Lucas tugged gently on my sleeve.
"Are you my aunt?""
The question broke something inside me.
"I don't know.""
"Grandpa said you're important.""
I looked up at Richard.
"Why am I important?""
He said nothing.
"Why?""
He finally spoke.
"Because your bloodline connects two families.""
I stared at him.
"What families?""
"Yours and mine.""
My stomach tightened.
"You mean the Whitmores.""
He nodded.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked just as confused.
Richard continued.
"Your father knew that eventually you would have to know.""
"Then why did he wait?""
"Because he was afraid you would choose the wrong person.""
I glanced at Daniel.
"Who was the wrong person?""
Richard didn't answer.
I felt anger rising again.
"You don't get to speak in riddles anymore.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell me exactly what happened on July 3, 2020.""
Richard stared at me for several seconds.
Then he spoke.
"Your mother went into labor.""
I swallowed.
"Continue.""
"Your father was there.""
Sarah closed her eyes.
"Your father had already arranged for the child to be transferred.""
"Lucas.""
"No.""
Richard shook his head.
"Another child.""
I stared.
"Another?""
He nodded.
"The boy born to your mother was not Lucas.""
My skin prickled.
"Then who was he?""
Richard looked at Sarah.
Sarah whispered, "Nobody knows.""
I stared at both of them.
"What do you mean nobody knows?""
"He was taken.""
"By who?""
"Your father.""
"Why?""
Richard's voice dropped.
"Because someone had ordered his death.""
The room fell silent.
I looked toward Lucas.
Then back at Richard.
"And Lucas?""
"Lucas was brought in later.""
"From where?""
Richard hesitated.
"From your father's private clinic.""
I felt dizzy.
"A clinic?""
Sarah nodded.
"Your father had been collecting biological samples for years.""
"What kind of samples?""
Sarah looked at me.
"Yours.""
The word hit like a slap.
"Mine?""
"Blood. Tissue. Fertility records. Everything.""
I stared at her.
"Why would my father collect my biological material?""
"Because he needed a match.""
"A match for what?""
Sarah whispered, "To keep his work alive.""
I couldn't breathe.
My father hadn't just been hiding another child.
He had been hiding an entire operation.
And somehow, I was part of it.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Emma, whatever this is, you didn't choose it.""
"I know.""
"Then stop blaming yourself.""
"I'm not.""
My phone buzzed again.
*6 minutes.*
Then another message.
*Ask Richard about the second birth certificate.*
I looked at him.
"The second birth certificate.""
Richard's expression went blank.
"Don't.""
"There are two?""
He didn't respond.
"Two birth certificates for the same day?""
"Emma.""
"Where is it?""
Richard reached inside his jacket.
For one second, I thought he was going to pull out a weapon.
Instead, he handed me a folded certificate.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first thing I saw was the baby's name.
*Lucas Whitmore.*
Mother: Sarah Whitmore.
Father: Daniel Whitmore.
Date of birth: July 3, 2020.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked stunned.
"No.""
I turned the paper over.
There was another document beneath it.
This one had been heavily altered.
I read the original information through the blacked-out lines.
Mother: *Emma Hart.*
Father: *Michael Hart.*
I stopped.
My father.
My name.
July 3, 2020.
I looked at Sarah.
"Why does this say I gave birth to him?""
She shook her head.
"You didn't.""
"Then why is my name on it?""
"I don't know.""
Richard took a breath.
"Because someone wanted the hospital to believe you had.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
"Who?""
Richard's face finally cracked.
"Your father.""
My knees nearly gave out.
"Why?""
"Because the child was genetically valuable.""
"Genetically valuable?""
Richard looked at Lucas.
"He wasn't the only child.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, the security alarm began ringing again.
But this time it wasn't the hotel alarm.
It was coming from Richard's phone.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
"What happened?"" Daniel asked.
Richard didn't respond.
I stepped closer.
The screen showed a live security feed.
A hospital corridor.
My mother was still sitting in the room from the photograph.
Then a man entered.
Gray hair.
Black coat.
I knew that face.
I had seen it every night in dreams since I was sixteen.
My father.
He placed a hand on my mother's shoulder.
My mother looked up.
She began crying.
Then my father's head slowly turned toward the security camera.
Straight toward us.
He smiled.
Richard whispered, "He knows.""
The image cut to black.
My phone buzzed one final time.
*4 minutes.*
Then a video appeared.
I pressed play.
My father's voice filled Room 417.
"Emma, if you're watching this, then Richard has finally failed.""
I froze.
His voice sounded exactly as I remembered.
Warm.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
Then he said:
"And before you ask why I stole your identity, your child, and six years of your life...""
The video paused.
A new line appeared on the screen.
*The wedding was never for Daniel.*
May you like
And beneath it:
*It was for you.*
