Chapter 3: The Man in the Hallway

The footsteps stopped outside Room 417.

Nobody breathed.

Sarah pressed one finger against her lips.

Daniel stood beside the door, his shoulders rigid, while I remained frozen near the center of the room, still trying to understand the sentence she'd just spoken.

*The baby in that picture is not Daniel's son.*

*Then whose son is he?*

*Yours.*

My mind rejected it before my heart could even process it.

I shook my head.

"No.""

Sarah watched me carefully.

"I'm sorry.""

"No. That doesn't make sense.""

"I know.""

"How could that child be mine?""

Daniel whispered, "Emma...""

I turned on him.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

The footsteps outside moved again.

Slowly.

One step.

Then another.

Sarah's face tightened.

"He's looking for us.""

"Who?"" I whispered.

She didn't answer.

I heard the faint scrape of a shoe against the carpet outside.

Then a man's voice.

Calm.

Deep.

Familiar.

"Daniel?""

Daniel's face changed.

I had seen that expression once before.

Six years ago, when we'd been driving home through a snowstorm and almost hit a deer.

Except this wasn't fear.

This was recognition.

The kind that comes from a wound reopening.

"Your father," Sarah whispered.

I looked at Daniel.

"He's here?""

Daniel nodded.

"Why?""

Sarah answered for him.

"Because he knows I came back.""

The doorknob began to turn.

Sarah rushed toward it.

"Back up.""

Daniel grabbed my hand.

"Stay behind me.""

The lock clicked.

The door opened two inches.

A man's voice came through.

"Daniel, open the door.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Go downstairs, Dad.""

Silence.

Then Richard spoke softly.

"You have exactly thirty seconds to open this door before I do it myself.""

My stomach tightened.

I had met Richard Whitmore dozens of times.

Holiday dinners.

Birthday parties.

Sunday lunches.

He had always been polite.

Reserved.

Generous.

The kind of man who remembered exactly how I took my coffee and sent flowers when my grandmother died.

I had never once been afraid of him.

Now I couldn't understand how I'd missed it.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She whispered, "He brought someone.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

She glanced toward the wall.

"Security.""

Daniel's jaw clenched.

He reached for the door.

"Daniel," I whispered.

He looked back.

"I have to stop this.""

"You can't.""

"I can keep you out of it.""

I almost laughed.

"You lost that option six years ago.""

His eyes dropped.

He opened the door.

Richard Whitmore stood in the hallway.

He wore a charcoal suit and carried no expression at all.

Two hotel security guards stood several feet behind him.

Richard's eyes moved from Daniel to Sarah.

He didn't look surprised.

"Hello, Sarah.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"Richard.""

His gaze shifted to me.

For the first time since I'd known him, I saw something like irritation flash across his face.

Not anger.

Calculation.

"Emma," he said smoothly.

"You should be downstairs.""

"I have a few questions.""

"So I imagine.""

His eyes dropped briefly to my wedding dress.

Then he gave a small smile.

"Congratulations.""

I stared at him.

"Is the baby mine?""

Richard's smile vanished.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Emma, stop.""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"She knows?""

"I told her.""

"You told her nothing.""

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"You never told him either.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Enough.""

"Six years," Sarah said.

"You really thought you could keep doing this forever?""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"I don't know what you think you're accomplishing.""

"I'm telling the truth.""

"You tried that before.""

Sarah flinched.

I noticed.

"Before what?""

Richard turned to me.

"Emma, you've been manipulated.""

"By Sarah?""

"By everyone in this room.""

He spoke so calmly that for one horrible second, I wondered whether I had lost my mind.

Then Sarah reached into her bag.

"Ask him about July 3, 2020.""

Richard's expression changed.

Only for an instant.

But I saw it.

"What happened July 3?"" I asked.

Richard said, "Nothing.""

Sarah pulled out a photograph.

She held it toward me.

It showed a hospital entrance.

A woman in a wheelchair.

A newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

And beside them—

my father.

I stopped breathing.

My father's face was unmistakable.

He had been dead for eleven years.

I looked at Sarah.

"That's impossible.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"That's your father.""

"But he died when I was sixteen.""

"I know.""

"Then who is that?""

Sarah swallowed.

"Your father was alive in 2020.""

My knees weakened.

Daniel caught my elbow.

I shoved his hand away.

"Don't touch me.""

Richard looked toward the security guards.

"Take Sarah.""

One guard stepped forward.

"Don't!"" I shouted.

The guard stopped.

I looked at Richard.

"You knew my father was alive?""

Richard didn't answer.

"Did you?""

He stared at me.

Then he said quietly, "Your father isn't the person you think he was.""

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

"Where is he?""

Richard's silence was answer enough.

I turned to Sarah.

"You said the baby was mine.""

She nodded.

"But how?""

Sarah looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

She took a breath.

"Because your father wasn't the only person involved.""

I felt sick.

"Tell me.""

Richard said, "This conversation ends now.""

"No.""

His voice sharpened.

"Emma, you are getting married in less than an hour.""

"Not anymore.""

Daniel flinched.

I barely noticed.

Sarah stepped closer.

"After your father disappeared, your mother believed he was dead.""

I shook my head.

"What does my mother have to do with this?""

Sarah hesitated.

"Everything.""

The room went silent.

"My mother?""

"She wasn't told the truth either.""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Sarah.""

"No.""

She turned toward him.

"She deserves to know.""

I felt my pulse pounding in my ears.

"What did my mother do?""

Sarah looked at me.

"She gave birth to a baby boy.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"Your mother gave birth four days after the accident.""

I couldn't speak.

Sarah continued.

"She was told the baby had died.""

A strange sound escaped my throat.

"No.""

Daniel whispered, "Emma...""

"Don't.""

I stared at Sarah.

"You're saying my mother had a son?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is he?""

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"That's the problem.""

Richard suddenly moved.

He grabbed Sarah's arm.

She cried out.

Daniel lunged forward.

"Get your hands off her!""

The security guards moved in.

I stepped between them.

"Stop!""

Richard released Sarah.

His composure had finally cracked.

"You don't understand what you're involving yourself in.""

"Then explain it.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

His eyes settled on me.

"Because some truths don't stay buried without taking people with them.""

Sarah wiped her arm.

"You still talk like a man who thinks he owns everyone.""

Richard looked at her coldly.

"You should have stayed away.""

"I tried.""

"You ran for six years.""

"Because you wanted me dead.""

The words stunned me.

I looked at Richard.

"Did you?""

"No.""

Sarah laughed.

"Then ask him who was driving the car on May 14.""

Richard went still.

Daniel whispered, "Sarah...""

She pointed at him.

"You knew.""

I looked between them.

"Knew what?""

Sarah's voice broke.

"The accident wasn't an accident.""

My chest tightened.

"What accident?""

"The one that killed the baby.""

Silence.

I stared at her.

"You just said my mother was told her son died.""

"He wasn't dead.""

The room seemed to disappear around me.

"What?""

Sarah reached into her bag again.

This time she pulled out a folded medical document.

She handed it to me.

At the top was the name of a hospital.

Beneath it:

*Infant Male — Born July 3, 2020.*

My hands shook.

"There was another record," she said.

"Four hours later, the child was transferred.""

"Transferred where?""

Sarah looked at Richard.

Richard said nothing.

"Where?""

Sarah whispered, "Whitmore Children's Foundation.""

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Daniel.

He stared at the paper.

"You knew about this.""

He shook his head.

"I knew there was a child.""

"Your child?""

"No.""

He looked directly into my eyes.

"I didn't know it was yours.""

"Then whose is it?""

Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.

He glanced down.

The caller ID made his face go blank.

It was my mother.

I answered it before he could.

"Mom?""

For several seconds, I heard only breathing.

Then my mother's voice came through, trembling.

"Emma, listen carefully.""

I closed my eyes.

"Mom, what happened?""

"I need you to leave that hotel.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard has found you.""

"I know.""

She gasped.

"You know?""

"Mom, did Dad survive?""

Silence.

Then a sob.

I gripped the phone.

"Mom.""

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your father didn't die in that accident.""

I looked at Richard.

He was watching me.

"And the baby?""

Another silence.

Then my mother said something that made every part of my body go cold.

"Emma...""

Her voice cracked.

"The baby was never supposed to be yours.""

I stared at the wall.

"What does that mean?""

"I didn't give birth to him.""

I couldn't breathe.

"But you just said—"

"I was told to say I did.""

The call suddenly cut out.

I looked at my phone.

No signal.

No answer.

Just silence.

Then, from somewhere behind me, Sarah whispered:

"They know.""

I turned.

"What?""

She was staring at the document in my hand.

"Who's they?""

Her face had gone white.

"Everyone.""

The lights in Room 417 flickered once.

Twice.

Then the hallway outside went completely dark.

And from the blackness beyond the doorway came a child's voice.

"Mom?""

I froze.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Daniel whispered my name.

The little voice came again.

Closer this time.

May you like

"Mom, it's me.""

And then a small hand appeared around the doorframe.
