Chapter 4: The Boy Behind the Door

The small hand curled around the doorframe.

Then a face appeared.

A little boy.

Maybe six years old.

His dark hair was damp, his cheeks flushed, and one hand held the strap of a tiny blue backpack. He stared into the room with the cautious expression of a child who had walked into a place where adults were whispering about something they didn't want him to hear.

His eyes landed on me.

He smiled.

"Mom?""

My heart stopped.

I couldn't move.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

"Who are you?""

The boy's smile disappeared.

He looked at Daniel, then at Sarah.

"Is she Emma?""

Sarah covered her mouth.

"How do you know that name?""

The boy shrugged.

"Grandpa showed me her picture.""

Richard suddenly pushed past the security guards.

"Get him out of here.""

The boy recoiled.

"Grandpa?""

I stared at Richard.

"You have a grandson?""

Richard said nothing.

The boy looked frightened now.

"Grandpa, I did what you said.""

My entire body went numb.

Richard crouched.

"Come here.""

The boy didn't move.

"Lucas," Richard said more sharply.

"Now.""

Lucas.

The name echoed in my head.

I had never heard it before.

Yet something about the boy felt strangely familiar.

The shape of his eyes.

The little dimple in his left cheek.

The way he tilted his head when confused.

I couldn't explain why, but seeing him felt like seeing a photograph I'd forgotten I had once held.

I whispered, "Lucas.""

He looked at me.

"Yes?""

I stepped forward.

Daniel caught my arm.

"Emma, don't.""

I pulled away.

"Let me go.""

I crouched until we were eye level.

Lucas studied my face.

Then he said, "You look different.""

I swallowed.

"Different from what?""

"Your picture.""

"What picture?""

He reached into his backpack.

Richard's face changed.

"Lucas.""

But the boy had already pulled out a small photograph.

He held it toward me.

It was old.

Bent at the corners.

A younger version of me stared back from the image.

I was seventeen.

Standing beside my father.

Behind us was a lake.

I remembered that day.

The last summer before everything changed.

My father had taken me fishing.

I'd thought it was a normal afternoon.

But in the photograph, he was holding something.

A small blue blanket.

I stared at it.

"What is this?""

Lucas pointed.

"That's me.""

My breath caught.

"No.""

He nodded.

"Grandpa says that's when Dad gave me to him.""

Daniel turned toward Richard.

"What the hell is he talking about?""

Richard stood slowly.

"Children repeat stories they don't understand.""

Lucas frowned.

"I understand.""

"Lucas," Richard said, "go with Mr. Cole.""

The older security guard stepped forward.

Lucas backed away.

"Do you know my mom?""

The question was directed at me.

My throat tightened.

"I don't know.""

Lucas frowned.

"But Grandpa said she would know me.""

Richard looked furious.

I turned toward him.

"You brought this child here.""

"No.""

"Then why is he here?""

"He followed Sarah.""

Sarah shook her head.

"I didn't bring him.""

Richard's eyes flashed.

"You knew he was coming.""

"I didn't.""

Daniel looked between them.

"Wait.""

He crouched beside Lucas.

"Where's your mother?""

Lucas looked at him.

"I don't know.""

"What do you mean you don't know?""

"Grandpa said she left.""

Sarah's face went pale.

"Your mother is Sarah.""

Lucas looked at her.

"Yes.""

Sarah closed her eyes.

I stared at her.

The pieces were falling into place, but none of them fit.

"You said the baby wasn't Daniel's.""

Sarah nodded.

"He isn't.""

"Then who is his father?""

She looked at me.

Your father.

The words didn't need to be spoken.

I knew.

"No.""

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"Emma...""

"My father?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I staggered backward.

Daniel caught me before I fell.

This time I didn't pull away.

My father's face flashed through my mind.

Every memory changed shape.

The late-night phone calls.

The locked office.

The unexplained trips.

The summer before he died.

The way he had looked at me when I told him I wanted to move away for college.

I had remembered sadness.

Now I wondered whether it had been guilt.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Sarah shook her head.

"Your father and I were together.""

I looked at her.

"When?""

"Before I met Daniel.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You were with my father?""

Sarah wiped her cheek.

"For two years.""

Richard spoke quietly.

"That's enough.""

Sarah ignored him.

"When your father found out I was pregnant, he panicked.""

I looked at Lucas.

My stomach twisted.

"He was the father.""

"Yes.""

"But my father was married.""

Sarah looked at me sadly.

"I know.""

I closed my eyes.

There was another thing I needed to know.

"Then why was my mother involved?""

Sarah looked toward Richard.

"Because your father's wife couldn't have another child.""

I opened my eyes.

"What?""

"Your mother had lost several pregnancies.""

My chest tightened.

"You knew my mother?""

"I knew what your father told me.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Sarah has spent years creating a story that doesn't exist.""

I turned on him.

"Then tell me the truth.""

He didn't answer.

"Tell me.""

His voice became low.

"Your father asked me for help.""

"What kind of help?""

"He wanted the child hidden.""

Lucas looked at Richard.

"Grandpa says I was dangerous.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Lucas, stop talking.""

The boy lowered his head.

I felt something tear open inside me.

"He was told to call you Grandpa?""

Lucas nodded.

"Sometimes.""

"Who did you live with?""

He looked at Sarah.

"With Mom.""

Sarah stared at him.

Then she whispered, "Until they took you.""

My skin went cold.

"Who took him?""

Sarah's eyes locked on Richard.

"His family.""

Daniel looked at his father.

"Did you take him?""

Richard said nothing.

"Did you?""

Richard finally answered.

"I protected him.""

"From who?""

"From your father.""

"My father is dead.""

"His enemies didn't die with him.""

I shook my head.

"Stop speaking in riddles.""

Richard looked at me.

"You think this is about a wedding.""

He gestured toward the room.

"It isn't.""

"It's about a child.""

"No.""

His eyes moved toward Lucas.

"It's about what this child inherited.""

I frowned.

"Inherited what?""

Richard didn't answer.

Sarah suddenly grabbed my wrist.

"We need to leave.""

"Why?""

"Because your father's people know where he is.""

I stared at her.

"Who are your father's people?""

Before she could answer, glass shattered somewhere downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Another sound followed.

A scream.

Then another.

The hotel fire alarm began blaring.

Red emergency lights flashed through the corridor.

Lucas covered his ears.

Daniel grabbed him.

"Stay with me.""

Richard shouted at the security guards.

"Move them through the service corridor!""

I grabbed Sarah.

"What's happening?""

"Someone found us.""

"Who?""

She looked at Lucas.

"People who believe he's worth more alive than dead.""

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?""

She didn't answer.

The hallway erupted into movement.

Guests were running toward the stairwell.

Hotel staff shouted.

Someone yelled that there was smoke on the second floor.

Richard grabbed Lucas from Daniel.

"Give him to me.""

Daniel blocked him.

"No.""

Richard's face went hard.

"Move.""

"You're not taking him anywhere.""

"Daniel, this isn't a game.""

"Neither is stealing a child.""

Lucas reached for Daniel.

"I want Dad.""

Everyone stopped.

Daniel stared at the boy.

"What did you call me?""

Lucas pointed at him.

"Mom said you're my real dad.""

Sarah's face collapsed.

"I never said that.""

Lucas looked confused.

"Yes, you did.""

Daniel stared at Sarah.

"You told him I'm his father?""

"I told him the truth I was afraid to tell.""

Daniel looked at Lucas again.

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something other than fear in his face.

Recognition.

Love.

He knelt.

"Lucas.""

The boy stepped toward him.

Daniel held out his arms.

Lucas ran into them.

Daniel hugged him tightly.

I watched them.

Something inside me broke.

Then another thought surfaced.

If Daniel wasn't Lucas's biological father, why had Lucas been raised to believe he was?

And why had Sarah brought him here now?

I turned toward Sarah.

"You said the baby wasn't Daniel's.""

"It isn't.""

"Then why does he think Daniel is his father?""

She stared at the two of them.

"Because Daniel was there when he was born.""

"When?""

"July 3, 2020.""

The same date.

The same hospital record.

The same day my mother had supposedly lost a baby.

I looked at Richard.

"You were there too.""

He didn't deny it.

"What happened that night?""

Richard's eyes settled on me.

"Your father made a choice.""

"What choice?""

"He chose you.""

I didn't understand.

"Me?""

"He knew they were coming.""

"Who?""

Richard looked toward the dark stairwell.

"Your father's enemies.""

Then he pulled a folded document from inside his jacket and held it out.

"Read this.""

I took it.

The first page was a medical consent form.

The patient's name was mine.

*Emma Hart.*

Except I had never been a patient at that hospital.

Below my name was a date.

*July 3, 2020.*

My hands started shaking.

"Why is my name on this?""

Richard said nothing.

I turned the page.

There was one handwritten sentence.

*Transfer genetic material immediately.*

I looked up.

"Genetic material?""

Sarah began crying.

Daniel was still holding Lucas.

Richard's face was unreadable.

Then the fire alarm abruptly stopped.

The hotel fell silent.

A second later, every phone in Room 417 buzzed at once.

Daniel looked at his screen.

Sarah looked at hers.

Richard looked at his.

Mine displayed a message from an unknown number.

*You have ten minutes.*

Another message appeared beneath it.

*Then everyone learns who Emma Hart really is.*

And the final message contained a photograph.

Not of Lucas.

Not of Sarah.

Not of my father.

It was a photograph of my mother.

Taken that morning.

May you like

She was sitting alone in a hospital room.

And behind her, reflected in the window, stood my father.
