Chapter 2: The Woman on the Phone
For three seconds, Daniel simply stared at his phone.
The ringtone cut through the room again.
*Sarah.*
The name glowed on the screen like a threat.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Then the wedding coordinator knocked again.
"Daniel? Emma? We really need you downstairs.""
Daniel reached for his phone.
I caught his wrist.
"Answer it.""
His eyes snapped to mine.
"Emma.""
"Answer it.""
The phone stopped ringing.
Silence.
Daniel swallowed.
Then it started again.
*Sarah.*
I let go of his wrist.
He turned the phone face down.
"No.""
"No?""
"I'm not answering.""
"Why?""
"It's complicated.""
"You said that about everything.""
His jaw tightened.
"Not now.""
"Then when?""
He glanced toward the bathroom door.
"Your mother's waiting. My father is waiting. Two hundred people are downstairs.""
"I don't care about two hundred people.""
"You will.""
I stepped closer.
"Who is she?""
Daniel looked at the phone.
His voice dropped.
"Someone I thought was gone.""
"Gone where?""
"I don't know.""
"Is she alive?""
He said nothing.
That was enough.
A cold wave moved through me.
"She's alive.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
The word landed harder than a scream.
I backed away.
"You knew.""
"I suspected.""
"She called you.""
"Yes.""
"How long?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Three weeks.""
I laughed, but my throat burned.
"Three weeks?""
"I didn't know what to do.""
"You could have told me.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
He looked at me.
"From the past.""
"Your past.""
"Our past.""
I stared at him.
"We didn't even know she existed.""
"That's not true.""
"What?""
"You knew.""
"I knew what you told me.""
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
Then he whispered, "Sarah called me the night before we met.""
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
"June 2020.""
The date hit me.
That was the month Daniel and I met.
A tiny memory surfaced.
A coffee shop.
Rain against the windows.
Daniel walking in ten minutes late.
His wet hair.
His nervous smile.
The first thing he said to me.
Sorry. I almost didn't come.
I had always thought he meant because of traffic.
I looked at him.
"You were supposed to meet her.""
He didn't answer.
"You were supposed to meet Sarah that night.""
"I was.""
"And you came to meet me instead.""
Daniel's silence became unbearable.
I whispered, "Oh my God.""
He stepped toward me.
"It wasn't like that.""
"Then what was it like?""
"She told me she was pregnant.""
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
"You knew?""
"Yes.""
"And you still dated me?""
"I was twenty-four.""
"So?""
"I was terrified.""
"Terrified enough to lie for six years.""
"I didn't know what Sarah was capable of.""
"What does that mean?""
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then his phone vibrated again.
A text this time.
He didn't want me to see it.
I grabbed the phone.
"Emma!""
I unlocked it before he could stop me.
One message.
From Sarah.
*Room 417. You have ten minutes. Come alone, Daniel.*
My hands started shaking.
I looked up.
"What is in Room 417?""
Daniel went completely still.
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
"I'm not.""
"You knew the room number the second I said it.""
He said nothing.
"Who is in that room?""
"I don't know.""
"Then we're going.""
"No.""
I stared at him.
"You're not going to stop me.""
"Emma, please.""
"You're coming with me.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Daniel's eyes hardened.
"Because if she's there, everything changes.""
The sentence chilled me.
"Everything already changed.""
He looked toward the door.
Then at me.
"I'm begging you.""
"Good.""
His expression faltered.
"Because now you know what it feels like.""
I walked past him.
He grabbed my arm.
"Don't.""
I looked down at his hand.
He released me instantly.
For years, Daniel had never raised his voice at me.
Never grabbed me.
Never frightened me.
Now I saw fear in his eyes.
Not fear for me.
Fear of what I might discover.
That was worse.
I opened the suite door.
The hallway was empty.
Wedding guests moved somewhere beyond the elevators, their voices blending with soft music.
I stepped into the hall.
Daniel followed.
"Emma.""
I kept walking.
"Please listen.""
I stopped without turning around.
"Five minutes.""
"What?""
"Tell me the truth in five minutes.""
"I can't tell you everything.""
"Then tell me enough.""
He stared at the floor.
"Sarah and I were together for three years.""
"I know.""
"When she got pregnant, she didn't want the baby.""
I turned.
"What?""
"She wanted money.""
"How much?""
"Two hundred thousand dollars.""
I blinked.
"She threatened you?""
"She said she'd tell my parents. My college. Everyone.""
"So you paid her?""
"I tried.""
"Did you?""
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because my father found out.""
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"He handled it.""
A horrible feeling settled in my stomach.
"What does that mean?""
"My father met Sarah.""
"When?""
"May 14.""
I froze.
"The day you told me to ask about.""
Daniel nodded.
"She disappeared after that.""
"Did your father make her disappear?""
"I don't know.""
"But you suspected.""
Daniel looked at me.
"I spent six years trying not to suspect.""
Before I could answer, the elevator doors opened.
Neither of us moved.
Then Daniel said, "I'll go alone.""
"No.""
"Emma, if she asked for me—"
"Then she can see me too.""
He stepped inside.
I followed.
The elevator doors closed.
For several floors, neither of us spoke.
I could hear my own breathing.
Finally, I said, "Did you love her?""
Daniel looked straight ahead.
"Once.""
That answer hurt.
Even though I'd asked for honesty.
"Do you love me?""
He turned to me.
"Yes.""
"Are you sure?""
His eyes filled.
"I've loved you every day since the first time I saw you.""
"Then why did you build our entire relationship on a lie?""
"Because I thought the lie would keep you safe.""
The elevator dinged.
Fourth floor.
The doors opened.
We walked down a narrow corridor.
Room 417 was at the very end.
There was no music up here.
No laughter.
No wedding decorations.
Just beige carpet and dim wall lights.
Daniel stopped six feet from the door.
He looked sick.
I whispered, "What's behind it?""
"I don't know.""
"You're scared.""
"Yes.""
"Of Sarah?""
"No.""
He looked at the door.
"Of what she knows.""
I stepped beside him.
There was a white envelope taped to the door.
My name was written across it.
*EMMA HART.*
I reached for it.
Daniel caught my hand.
"Don't.""
"Why?""
"Because that means she knows about you.""
I pulled the envelope free.
Inside was a photograph.
An old one.
Sarah stood outside a small white house.
She was holding a baby.
A little boy.
Dark hair.
Round cheeks.
And in her hand was a folded ultrasound image.
My eyes moved to the date printed in the bottom corner.
*May 14, 2020.*
I stared at the baby.
Then at Daniel.
He had gone white.
"Daniel.""
He couldn't speak.
I turned the photograph over.
There was one sentence written on the back.
*You were never supposed to meet Emma.*
My fingers began trembling.
"Who is the child's father?""
Daniel backed away.
"Emma...""
"Who?""
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I raised my voice.
"Who is the father?""
The door behind us unlocked.
Click.
We both turned.
It opened slowly.
A woman stood inside.
She was thinner than the photograph.
Older.
Her dark hair hung loosely around her shoulders.
Her face looked exhausted.
But I recognized her immediately.
Sarah.
She stared at Daniel first.
Then at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You're Emma.""
I couldn't answer.
Sarah looked down at my wedding dress.
"I'm sorry.""
Daniel stepped between us.
"What are you doing here?""
Sarah gave him a bitter smile.
"You still ask questions like you don't already know the answers.""
"Where have you been?""
"Running.""
"From who?""
She looked at him.
"Your father.""
Daniel's breathing stopped.
Sarah looked at me.
Then she said the words that shattered the last piece of certainty I had left.
"Emma, the baby in that picture is not Daniel's son.""
I stared at her.
"Then whose son is he?""
Sarah's eyes dropped.
"Yours.""
The hallway seemed to tilt.
"What?""
Sarah's lips trembled.
"Your father was the one who—"
A loud crash came from the stairwell.
Sarah spun around.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
"Get inside.""
"What happened?""
"Now.""
He pulled me through the doorway.
Sarah slammed the door behind us.
From the hallway came the sound of hurried footsteps.
Someone was coming toward Room 417.
May you like
Then Sarah whispered:
"He's here.""
