Chapter 10: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Me

Claire's smile was the most terrifying thing I'd seen all day.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was familiar.

I'd seen that smile across coffee shop tables.

At birthday dinners.

In photographs.

Beside me when I graduated.

Beside me when Daniel proposed.

Beside me that morning while I thought I was surrounded by people who loved me.

And now she was standing in the hidden laboratory beneath my wedding venue, telling me my father had never wanted to become me.

He wanted to become her.

I stared at her.

"You're lying.""

Claire slowly shook her head.

"I wish I were.""

Daniel stepped in front of me.

"Stay away from her.""

Claire laughed softly.

"You still protect Emma.""

"Yes.""

"You always did.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"Who are you?""

Claire looked at him.

"You've known me for six years.""

"No.""

Her expression changed.

"That's the point.""

Richard moved toward her.

"Don't do this.""

Claire's eyes hardened.

"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.""

Sarah whispered, "Claire...""

Claire looked at her.

"You knew.""

Sarah began crying.

"I knew there was another subject.""

"You knew it was me.""

"I suspected.""

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Everyone always suspects. Nobody ever tells Emma.""

I stepped around Daniel.

"What did my father do to you?""

Claire looked directly into my eyes.

"Everything he did to you.""

She touched the crescent-shaped mark near her shoulder.

"They took me when I was nineteen.""

"Who?""

"Your father.""

"Why?""

"Because I was compatible.""

"With what?""

She looked toward Lucas.

"With you.""

The laboratory suddenly felt colder.

Claire continued.

"Your father spent years looking for someone whose body could hold the memories he wanted to transfer.""

I swallowed.

"And you were that person.""

"At first.""

"What changed?""

She smiled without humor.

"You happened.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"When your father realized your body rejected the transfer, he needed another option.""

She pointed at me.

"He created you as the original.""

I shook my head.

"My father didn't create me.""

"He modified you.""

She said it so calmly that I almost couldn't process it.

"Before you were born, he altered your genetic material. He believed he could make you a living vessel for a memory pattern.""

"His memory pattern.""

"Yes.""

"And you?""

"I was the backup.""

I stared at her.

"Why do you look like me?""

Claire's expression softened.

"Because he designed me to.""

A memory struck me.

Claire sitting beside me in our college dorm.

Her touching her hair.

Her laughing when I complained about a photograph.

I'd always thought we had similar features.

Not identical.

Just close enough to joke about.

Now I understood.

She had spent six years standing beside me because my father wanted to study the difference between us.

I whispered, "You were watching me.""

"Yes.""

"From the beginning.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because every year you survived, I became less important.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

"He needed to know whether your memories would eventually stabilize.""

"And if they did?""

"Then I would be eliminated.""

My throat tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of my father?""

"Of everyone.""

She looked toward Richard.

"He controlled the police.""

Toward Sarah.

"He controlled the hospital.""

Toward Daniel.

"He controlled your future.""

Then she looked at me.

"And he controlled your memories.""

I remembered the hospital.

My own voice.

Take it away.

Suddenly another memory surfaced.

Claire crying beside my bed.

Me holding her hand.

"Don't let them take him.""

Claire whispering:

"I won't.""

Then Daniel.

"Promise.""

Claire nodding.

"I promise.""

I stared at her.

"You helped me.""

She nodded.

"I did.""

"Why?""

"Because I couldn't save myself.""

She stepped toward the glass chamber.

"So I saved you.""

Tears burned my eyes.

"What happened to your memories?""

"My father erased parts of them too.""

"Then how do you remember?""

She pointed toward the machine.

"The system restored mine when yours came back.""

Richard looked at the control panel.

"But that shouldn't have happened.""

Claire smiled.

"You taught him how to build it.""

Richard looked shattered.

"And you learned from him.""

"Exactly.""

The countdown on the wall still showed nine minutes.

I looked at it.

"Why is Lucas connected to the system?""

Claire's face became serious.

"Because your father made a final adjustment.""

"What adjustment?""

"He realized he couldn't force the transfer into you.""

She looked at Lucas.

"So he made a bridge.""

Daniel tightened his arms around the boy.

"Me.""

Claire nodded.

"You.""

"And Lucas.""

"Yes.""

"And Emma.""

"Yes.""

Daniel's face went pale.

"What happens if the system completes?""

Claire answered quietly.

"Your emotional memories become the bridge.""

"To what?""

She looked at me.

"To whoever is waiting on the other side.""

A chill moved through me.

"My father.""

Claire nodded.

"Not his body.""

"His mind.""

"His memories.""

I looked at the empty chamber.

Then at Claire.

"You said he's trying to become you.""

She nodded.

"Because I was the only successful host.""

"So why doesn't he just use you?""

Claire's expression changed.

"Because my body is dying.""

Everyone went silent.

She gave a small shrug.

"The procedure damaged me.""

Sarah began sobbing.

Claire ignored her.

"Your father needed a younger host.""

I looked at myself.

"Me.""

"Yes.""

"And the wedding?""

"The wedding was designed to trigger the final emotional synchronization.""

Daniel whispered, "The vows.""

Claire nodded.

"When you said 'I do,' the system would have recognized the bond between you and Daniel.""

"And transferred my father's memories.""

"Into you.""

I looked toward the white dress.

My wedding.

The flowers.

The church.

The vows.

All of it had been one enormous machine.

I felt something inside me settle.

Not peace.

Something harder.

Decision.

"What happens if we destroy the system?""

Claire looked at me.

"The transfer fails.""

"And?""

"Your father loses access.""

"To me.""

"Yes.""

"And Lucas?""

"He survives.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Then destroy it.""

Richard shook his head.

"Not yet.""

Everyone looked at him.

"There is another problem.""

"What?""

Richard pointed at the monitor.

"The system isn't responding to the shutdown.""

Claire's face changed.

"That's impossible.""

"No.""

Richard pointed again.

"Look.""

The screen displayed:

*PRIMARY HOST: EMMA HART*

*SECONDARY HOST: CLAIRE WHITMORE*

*BRIDGE: DANIEL WHITMORE*

*GENETIC SUBJECT: LUCAS WHITMORE*

*OVERRIDE: MICHAEL HART*

I stared.

"My father still controls it.""

Claire whispered, "He's here.""

A speaker crackled.

Then my father's voice filled the room.

"Very good, Emma.""

Everyone froze.

"I knew you would remember.""

I looked around.

"Where are you?""

A camera above us rotated.

It focused directly on me.

My father's face appeared on the monitor.

He was standing in the hospital room beside my mother.

Alive.

Smiling.

"Hello, daughter.""

My mother was crying behind him.

I stepped toward the screen.

"Why?""

"Because you were the closest thing I ever created to perfection.""

"I'm not your experiment.""

"You've never understood.""

"Then explain.""

He smiled.

"Your mother had two daughters.""

My blood ran cold.

Claire looked at me.

"I was the first," my father continued.

"You were the second.""

I stared.

"The first child inherited my research.""

He looked toward Claire.

"The second inherited my resistance.""

I felt tears gather.

"Why did you make us?""

"Because I wanted to defeat death.""

"By using your daughters?""

"By preserving what mattered.""

"Yourself.""

"Yes.""

His honesty was almost worse than a lie.

He looked at Daniel.

"And you were the perfect bridge.""

Daniel said nothing.

"Why did you erase my memories?""

"Because you discovered what I was doing.""

"When?""

"Six years ago.""

I remembered.

The first ceremony.

The hospital.

The baby.

My father.

My mother.

Claire.

Everything came back.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew.""

He nodded.

"You asked me to forget.""

"Why?""

"Because you thought forgetting would keep Lucas safe.""

I looked at Lucas.

The little boy was staring at me.

Then he reached into his backpack.

He pulled out a folded paper.

"I found this.""

I opened it.

It was written in my handwriting.

Six years old memories ago.

*If I ever forget, tell me this:*

*I chose love over him.*

My breathing stopped.

There was one more line.

*Daniel is not my prison. He's my proof that I escaped.*

I looked at Daniel.

He was crying.

"I wrote that?""

He nodded.

"You did.""

My father spoke again.

"Emma, you can still come back.""

I looked at the screen.

"I already did.""

His smile faded.

I walked toward the control panel.

Richard said, "What are you doing?""

"Ending it.""

I placed my hand on the scanner.

The system recognized me.

*PRIMARY HOST CONFIRMED*

My father shouted through the speaker.

"Don't!""

I pressed the emergency override.

The machine screamed.

Sparks exploded across the room.

Claire covered her face.

Daniel shielded Lucas.

The monitors began dying one by one.

*TRANSFER ABORTED*

My father's image flickered.

"Emma!""

I stared into the screen.

For the first time in my life, I saw him without fear.

Just a man terrified of losing control.

"You don't own me.""

The screen went black.

The laboratory fell silent.

Then every lock released.

Daniel exhaled.

Sarah collapsed into a chair.

Richard stood motionless.

Claire sank against the glass.

I walked to her.

She looked up.

"What now?""

I knelt beside her.

"Now you live.""

She laughed weakly.

"I don't know how.""

"Neither do I.""

I took her hand.

"But we'll figure it out.""

Lucas came running over.

He looked between us.

"So who's my mom?""

Sarah began to cry.

Claire smiled.

And I looked at Daniel.

He smiled back.

"Looks like we have a lot of explaining to do.""

Three months later, the wedding venue was empty.

No flowers.

No white dress.

No guests.

No vows.

Instead, there was a small gathering in a quiet park.

My mother sat beneath a tree.

Sarah sat beside her.

Claire wore a simple blue dress.

Lucas chased butterflies across the grass.

Daniel stood next to me.

We still weren't married.

We weren't rushing anymore.

For the first time, every decision belonged to us.

No hidden ceremony.

No secret contract.

No countdown.

Just a choice.

Daniel took my hand.

"So," he said softly, "what happens now?""

I looked at Lucas.

At Claire.

At my mother.

At the life that somehow survived everything my father had tried to control.

I smiled.

"We start over.""

He squeezed my hand.

"Together?""

I looked at him.

"Only if you mean it.""

Daniel smiled.

"I've meant it for six years.""

Behind us, Lucas shouted.

"Emma!""

I turned.

He held up a yellow flower.

"For you.""

I walked toward him.

And as I took it, I felt something strange.

Not fear.

Not grief.

Not the pressure of a secret waiting to explode.

Peace.

For years, I'd believed my life had been stolen from me.

But the truth was harder and more beautiful.

It had never belonged to my father.

It had never belonged to Daniel.

It had never belonged to the family that tried to rewrite it.

May you like

It had always belonged to me.

And this time, I remembered.
