Chapter 8: The Money She Could Never Explain

The number on the screen blurred.

Not because I couldn’t read it.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

The bank transfer showed my name.

My account information.

A transaction I had never seen.

And an amount of money large enough to change someone’s life.

Beneath it was the message:

*Ask your sister where the rest of the money went.*

I looked up slowly.

Every person in the room was watching me.

Except Kayla.

She was staring at the floor.

And that told me everything.

“Kayla.””

Her shoulders shook.

“Emma…”

“Where did the money come from?””

She didn’t answer.

“Where?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, wait.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was calm now.

Too calm.

“I have spent weeks listening to everyone explain why they kept things from me.””

I looked around the room.

“My husband.””

Andrew lowered his eyes.

“My sister.””

Kayla started crying.

“My ex-fiancé.””

Daniel looked away.

“But nobody asked me what I wanted.””

The silence was unbearable.

“So I’m asking now.””

I looked directly at Kayla.

“Where did my money go?””

She wiped her face.

“It wasn’t like that.””

I almost laughed.

That was always the beginning.

It wasn’t like that.

I had heard that sentence from everyone.

“It wasn’t like what?””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t steal from you.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the floor.

“I borrowed it.””

The room went silent.

“You borrowed my money?””

“I was going to pay it back.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“Kayla.””

Her voice became smaller.

“When I got everything fixed.””

I stared.

“Everything fixed?””

She nodded.

“Michael said he could help.””

The name again.

Michael.

The person who seemed to appear in every secret.

“What did Michael have to do with my money?””

She closed her eyes.

“He knew about Daniel.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

Kayla continued.

“He knew Daniel had left money behind.””

Daniel looked confused.

“I never told him that.””

“No.””

Kayla looked at him.

“But I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“From when you left.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“What documents?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“When I left, I put money aside.””

My heart tightened.

“For me?””

He nodded.

“I knew I had hurt you.””

I looked away.

“So you thought money would fix it?””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I knew it wouldn’t.””

“Then why?””

“Because I wanted you to have something if you ever needed help.””

I stared at him.

The cruel part was that it sounded exactly like something the old Daniel would do.

The Daniel before everything fell apart.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because I never wanted you to think I was trying to buy forgiveness.””

I looked back at Kayla.

“And you found it.””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Before I moved in.””

My stomach dropped.

“So the entire time you were crying about having nowhere to go…”

“I was scared.””

“You knew there was money.””

“Yes.””

“And you still came here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

And for once, she didn’t have a prepared answer.

“Because I knew you would help me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You knew I would help you because I always do.””

She cried silently.

“And you used that.””

“I didn’t mean to.””

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

She looked up.

“I didn’t plan to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

The words hung between us.

Because nobody could argue with them.

Andrew walked closer.

“Kayla, how much did you take?””

She looked away.

“How much?””

“Twenty thousand.””

I froze.

Daniel looked stunned.

“Twenty thousand?””

She nodded.

“And the rest?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at her.

“The message says the rest.””

Her face changed.

A flash of fear.

A tiny reaction.

But I saw it.

“There’s more.””

She started crying.

“I don’t have it.””

“Where is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Where is it, Kayla?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Michael.””

My stomach turned.

“He took it?””

She nodded.

“He said he was investing it.””

I stared.

“You gave my money to Michael?””

“I thought he was helping me.””

“With what?””

She looked down.

“With getting my life back.””

I felt exhausted.

Not angry.

Not even shocked.

Just exhausted.

Because every secret revealed another secret underneath.

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Forty thousand.””

Daniel stepped back.

“That money was for Emma.””

“I know.””

“You gave it to someone you barely knew?””

“I thought I could trust him.””

I looked at her.

“And you couldn’t trust me.””

She started crying harder.

“I was ashamed.””

“That doesn’t make it okay.””

“I know.””

“No, Kayla.””

I shook my head.

“You know now.””

She became quiet.

“You didn’t know when you took it.””

The truth hurt because it was simple.

No complicated explanation.

No mystery.

No manipulation.

Just a choice.

A choice she made.

Andrew sat down.

He looked as tired as I felt.

“Where is Michael now?””

Kayla shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Then why was he messaging you?””

“Because he wanted me to do something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

And my heart sank.

“What did he want?””

She whispered:

“To get closer to Andrew.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my husband.

Andrew’s face hardened.

“Why?””

Kayla shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“I think I do.””

Everyone looked at him.

He took a breath.

“Michael wasn’t interested in Kayla.””

“What?””

“He was interested in Emma.””

My body went cold.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at the phone with the bank transfer.

“Three years ago, before I left, I found out someone was trying to access information about Emma.””

“What information?””

“Financial records.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Andrew’s expression changed.

“But Michael does.””

Daniel nodded.

“I think so.””

A horrible realization started forming.

“This wasn’t about Kayla.””

Nobody answered.

“It was about me.””

Andrew looked at me.

“Emma…”

I looked at my sister.

“You brought him to me.””

She cried.

“I didn’t know.””

“You brought someone into my life who was trying to get something from me.””

“I didn’t know.””

“You said that before.””

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology sounded broken.

But broken didn’t mean enough.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

A sound from downstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone walking into the house like they belonged there.

Andrew immediately stood.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Kayla looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“Kayla?””

She whispered:

“He shouldn’t be here.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Emma?””

Every person in the room went still.

The man stepped into view.

He was younger than I expected.

Calm.

Well-dressed.

Almost ordinary.

Which somehow made him more frightening.

His eyes moved around the room.

Then landed on me.

“I think we need to talk.””

Andrew stepped in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled slightly.

“I’m the person who has been trying to clean up Kayla’s mess.””

Kayla shook her head.

“No.””

The man looked at her.

“You really thought you could disappear?””

My skin went cold.

Andrew’s voice hardened.

“Leave.””

The man ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Emma, you have no idea what your sister found.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“The money was never the important part.””

I frowned.

“Then what was?””

His smile disappeared.

“The thing your sister stole before she ever moved into this house.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

Then he said:

“She took the one thing that could prove why Daniel left you.””

Nobody breathed.

I stared at the envelope.

Because I recognized it.

The handwriting.

The paper.

The seal.

It was the same kind of envelope as the letter Daniel showed me.

Except this one had my name written on it.

And a date from three years ago.

A date I remembered.

The day everything in my life changed.

The man looked at me.

“You deserve to know what really happened that night.””

Then he turned toward Kayla.

“And she deserves to know why you lied.””

Kayla’s face went white.

May you like

Because whatever was inside that envelope…

was the one secret she had been trying hardest to keep hidden.
