Chapter 6: The Letter That Was Never Sent

Nobody moved after Kayla said his name.

Jason.

The name that had started everything.

The man who supposedly abandoned my sister.

The man who supposedly destroyed her life.

The man who now seemed to be standing behind every secret that had entered my home.

Kayla stared at her phone like it was something dangerous.

“Answer it,” I said.

Her eyes lifted.

“What?””

“Answer the phone.””

She looked terrified.

“Emma…”

“Answer it.””

For once, she didn’t argue.

She pressed the button and put the phone on speaker.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then Jason spoke.

“Kayla.””

His voice sounded exhausted.

Not angry.

Not victorious.

Just tired.

Kayla gripped the phone tighter.

“Why are you calling me?””

A bitter laugh came from the speaker.

“Really?””

Nobody said anything.

Jason continued.

“I heard Daniel is there.””

My eyes moved to Daniel.

He looked uncomfortable.

“You knew?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern in my life.

Everyone knew something.

Except me.

Jason’s voice came through again.

“Emma, are you there?””

My body stiffened.

I didn’t want to answer.

But I did.

“Yes.””

A long pause.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology caught me off guard.

Not because I believed it.

Because I had expected anger.

“You’re sorry for what?””

“For letting this get this far.””

I looked around the room.

At Kayla.

At Daniel.

At Andrew.

“Explain.””

Jason sighed.

“Not over the phone.””

“Then explain enough.””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Kayla didn’t just lie about the breakup.””

Kayla closed her eyes.

“Jason, don’t.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

The exhaustion disappeared.

“You don’t get to control the story anymore.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What story?””

Jason answered.

“The reason she came to your house.””

I looked at my sister.

She looked away.

“Kayla told you I threw her out,” Jason said.

“Yes.””

“That wasn’t the whole truth.””

“What was the whole truth?””

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then Jason said:

“She was afraid I would tell you what happened before she arrived.””

I looked at Andrew.

“What happened?””

Jason continued.

“She wasn’t running from me.””

The room felt colder.

“She was running from what she did.””

I shook my head.

“What does that mean?””

Jason’s voice lowered.

“Ask her why she needed a place to hide.””

I looked at Kayla.

She was crying now.

Not quietly.

Not dramatically.

Real tears.

The kind that came from knowing the truth was finally catching up.

“Kayla.””

She didn’t look at me.

“Tell me.””

She wiped her face.

“I didn’t think it would become this.””

“What?””

“All of this.””

I laughed softly.

“All of this?””

I pointed around the room.

“My husband hiding things. My ex-fiancé showing up. A stranger sending me pictures. You bringing secrets into my home.””

Her shoulders shook.

“I was scared.””

I stepped closer.

“Stop saying that.””

She looked up.

“Why?””

“Because fear explains why someone runs.””

My voice cracked.

“But it doesn’t excuse who they hurt while running.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Andrew quietly said:

“Kayla, tell us.””

She looked at him.

And something about his expression made her finally give up fighting.

She sat down.

“I met Michael six months ago.””

Jason stayed silent on the phone.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

“Yes,” I said.

She nodded.

“I know.””

She looked at her hands.

“But Michael wasn’t the only problem.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She swallowed.

“Michael knew Daniel.””

The room went completely still.

I turned toward Daniel.

“What?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I looked at Kayla.

“Explain.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Michael told me he knew someone from your past.””

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“And he said Daniel had something that could destroy your marriage.””

My eyes moved to Daniel.

“What did you have?””

Daniel looked away.

“I didn’t know it would be used like this.””

“Used for what?””

Nobody answered.

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone keeps speaking around me like I’m not standing here.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I found the letter.””

“The letter I wrote you?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

He hesitated.

“In a storage box.””

My stomach tightened.

“What storage box?””

“The one I left behind.””

I stared at him.

“You kept my things?””

“I couldn’t throw everything away.””

The answer should have sounded emotional.

Instead, it felt disturbing.

“You had my personal letters for three years?””

“I never read them.””

I almost laughed.

“Do you expect me to believe that?””

Daniel looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

I had spent too much time caring about everyone’s feelings except my own.

Andrew stepped forward.

“Why did Kayla have the letter?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Kayla answered.

“I found it.””

“Where?”” I asked again.

This time, she didn’t avoid it.

“In Daniel’s apartment.””

The room went silent.

“You went to his apartment?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

Her face turned red.

“Because Michael told me to.””

I stared.

“What?””

She covered her face.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you’ve been letting strangers manipulate your life.””

She didn’t argue.

That scared me.

“Why would Michael tell you to find Daniel?””

Kayla looked at the floor.

“Because he said he could help me.””

“With what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Kayla.””

She whispered:

“With getting what I wanted.””

My heart dropped.

“What did you want?””

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the person I remembered.

My little sister.

The girl who used to cry when she hurt someone.

Then she said:

“I wanted to prove that you weren’t as perfect as everyone thought.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because everyone always chose you.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Mom praised you. Dad trusted you. Everyone said you were the responsible one.””

“That’s what this is about?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“Not just that.””

“Then what?””

Her voice became smaller.

“I hated that you had the life I wanted.””

There it was.

The truth.

Ugly.

Painful.

Human.

She wasn’t a villain from a movie.

She was my sister.

Someone I loved.

Someone who had still hurt me.

“I helped you,” I whispered.

“I know.””

“I opened my home.””

“I know.””

“I defended you.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Tears ran down her face.

“Because I knew you would.””

I didn’t understand.

She continued.

“You always forgive people.””

The sentence hit me harder than anything else.

Because it wasn’t a compliment.

It was an explanation.

She had mistaken my love for permission.

Andrew moved beside me.

“Who sent the photograph?””

Everyone looked at Jason’s name still glowing on Kayla’s phone.

Jason answered quietly.

“Not me.””

“Then who?””

Silence.

Then Jason said:

“You need to ask Michael.””

Kayla looked up sharply.

“Why?””

“Because he’s the one who started all of this.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Jason’s voice became serious.

“Michael didn’t just date Kayla.””

My sister froze.

“What are you talking about?””

“He was investigating her.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Jason’s phone icon.

“Investigating?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Jason said the words that changed everything.

“Because Michael believed Kayla had been lying about something much bigger than cheating.””

Kayla stood suddenly.

“No.””

Jason continued.

“He said she wasn’t trying to escape a breakup.””

My skin went cold.

“She was trying to escape a secret.””

Kayla’s face went pale.

“What secret?””

Jason answered:

“The one she was hiding from Emma.””

I looked at my sister.

“What secret?””

She backed away.

For the first time, she looked truly afraid.

Not embarrassed.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

And then her phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From Michael.

One sentence.

*She knows now. Time to tell her why you really chose her house.*

Kayla dropped the phone.

And for the first time since she arrived…

I saw fear in her eyes.

May you like

Not because she had been caught.

Because something worse was coming.
