Chapter 4: The Truth Andrew Was Protecting
The call ended with Andrew’s voice still trapped in my mind.
“I was helping her hide…”
Those words followed me everywhere.
Through the hallway.
Into the kitchen.
Up the stairs.
Even into the quiet moments when I stood still and tried to convince myself that I had misunderstood.
But I hadn’t.
I knew what I heard.
And now I needed to know the rest.
I walked upstairs slowly.
Kayla’s bedroom door was closed.
For the first time since she moved in, I didn’t knock.
I opened it.
She looked up from her bed immediately.
She wasn’t surprised.
That bothered me more than anything.
“You knew I would come in here,” I said.
She placed her phone down.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because you’re finally asking the right questions.””
I stared at her.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act like you’re some victim in this.””
Her expression hardened.
“I’m not.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked away.
“I have been.””
I almost laughed.
“No, Kayla. You’ve been telling me pieces. The pieces that make you look better.””
She didn’t respond.
“Who did Andrew help you hide from?””
She was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“Jason.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because he was angry.””
“Angry because you cheated?””
She flinched.
“Yes.””
“Then why did Andrew get involved?””
“That’s what you should ask him.””
“I’m asking you.””
She sighed.
“Because Andrew found out before you did.””
“How?””
Kayla rubbed her hands together nervously.
“He saw me with someone.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Kayla.””
“It was Michael.””
I waited.
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is Michael?””
She swallowed.
“My coworker.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“The same person you cheated with?””
“Yes.””
“And Andrew knew?””
“Yes.””
My heart hurt.
Not because of the affair.
Because of the secrets.
Everyone had been making decisions around me.
Everyone had been deciding what I could handle.
What I deserved to know.
“What did Andrew do?””
Kayla looked uncomfortable.
“He talked to Jason.””
“Why?””
“Because Jason was going to come to your house.””
I frowned.
“Why would Jason come here?””
“To tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
Kayla didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
“He wanted to tell you I cheated.””
I stared at her.
“And Andrew stopped him?””
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked frustrated.
“Emma, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain it.””
She took a deep breath.
“Andrew didn’t stop him because he wanted to protect me.””
“Then why?””
“Because he wanted to protect you.””
I said nothing.
Kayla continued.
“Jason was furious. He wanted everyone to know what happened. He wanted you to hate me.””
“And?””
“And Andrew told him that exposing me wouldn’t help anyone.””
I shook my head.
“That still doesn’t explain why he hid it from me.””
Kayla looked at me.
“Because he knew you.””
The answer hurt.
“What does that mean?””
“He knew you would forgive me.””
I froze.
She wasn’t wrong.
That was the worst part.
If Jason had shown up at my door crying and angry, I would have listened.
I would have defended Kayla.
I would have searched for reasons.
Because that was what I did.
I always looked for the good version of people.
Even when they weren’t giving me one.
Kayla’s voice became quieter.
“He thought you would take my side and blame yourself.””
I looked at her.
“And what did you think?””
She didn’t answer.
“Kayla.””
She looked down.
“I thought you would understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I made a mistake.””
There it was again.
That word.
A mistake.
I felt anger rising.
“You keep saying that because it makes it sound smaller.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I’m ashamed.””
“Are you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you keep trying to get Andrew’s attention?””
Her face changed.
The question landed.
She looked away.
“I wasn’t.””
“Yes, you were.””
“No.””
“You called it a test.””
Silence.
“You walked around him in a towel over and over.””
“I wanted to know.””
“Know what?””
She looked at me.
And this time, she didn’t have a clever answer.
“I wanted to know if I still had power.””
The honesty shocked me.
“What?””
She wiped her eyes.
“After Jason left, I felt like I had nothing.””
“So you tested my husband?””
“No.””
“Then what was it?””
She looked embarrassed.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
She sat quietly for several seconds.
Then she whispered:
“I wanted to prove I wasn’t the person everyone thought I was.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“You hurt Jason.””
“I know.””
“You hurt me.””
“I know.””
“You disrespected my marriage.””
Her face fell.
“I know.””
For the first time, she sounded like she actually understood.
But understanding damage after causing it didn’t erase the damage.
I walked out.
I needed air.
I needed space.
Most of all, I needed Andrew.
I found him sitting in his car outside the house.
The engine was off.
His head was resting against the seat.
When he saw me, he immediately got out.
“Emma.””
I held up my hand.
“Tell me everything.””
He looked at me.
“I will.””
“No more protecting people from consequences.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
We stood in the driveway.
The same place where Kayla had arrived weeks earlier with two suitcases and tears in her eyes.
Only now, everything felt different.
“When did you find out?”” I asked.
“About Kayla and Michael?””
“Yes.””
“Two weeks before she moved in.””
I stared at him.
“Two weeks?””
He nodded.
“Jason called me.””
“Why you?””
“Because he couldn’t reach you.””
“Why couldn’t he reach me?””
“Because Kayla had already blocked him.””
My eyes closed.
Of course she had.
Andrew continued.
“He was angry. Hurt. He said he wanted to expose everything.””
“Why didn’t you let him?””
“Because I wanted to talk to Kayla first.””
“And?””
“I asked her if it was true.””
“What did she say?””
“She admitted it.””
I looked away.
“So you knew she lied to me.””
His expression changed.
“I knew she was afraid.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He was quiet.
Finally:
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
More than a lie would have.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I knew what would happen.””
“What?””
“You would have blamed yourself.””
I looked at him.
“That’s not your decision to make.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was immediate.
No excuses.
No defense.
And somehow that made it harder.
Because I wasn’t angry at Andrew for cheating.
He hadn’t.
I was angry because he had taken away my choice.
“You should have trusted me with the truth.””
“I should have.””
I looked at the house.
“Then why did you keep the picture?””
His face changed.
“The picture?””
“Yes.””
He looked confused.
“What picture?””
“The one someone sent me.””
His confusion became genuine.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
I studied him.
“You don’t?””
“No.””
“Kayla said you wanted her to keep quiet.””
Andrew’s expression darkened.
“She said that?””
“Yes.””
He looked toward the house.
Then back at me.
“Emma, I never asked Kayla to hide anything from you.””
“Then why would she say that?””
“I don’t know.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because suddenly there was a new possibility.
A possibility I didn’t want to consider.
“What if she’s been lying about more than Jason?””
Andrew didn’t answer.
Because he was thinking the same thing.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t respond.
He just turned the phone toward me.
A message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
*You finally know about Jason. Now ask your husband about the night Kayla came to your house.*
I looked at Andrew.
“What night?””
He stared at the message.
His face had gone pale.
“Emma…”
“What night?””
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because Andrew had always had an answer.
Always.
Until now.
Then another message appeared.
A photograph loaded beneath it.
Not of Andrew and Kayla.
Not of Jason.
A different picture.
One taken inside our house.
The night Kayla arrived.
And in the corner of the image was something I hadn’t noticed before.
A suitcase.
Not Kayla’s suitcase.
Someone else’s.
Someone who had been in our home before she ever moved in.
May you like
And written across the bottom of the photo were four words:
*She was never alone.*
