Chapter 7: The Reason She Came to My Door

The message on Kayla’s phone remained visible for several seconds.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

It was only one sentence.

*She knows now. Time to tell her why you really chose her house.*

But those words felt heavier than a hundred accusations.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

Kayla had not chosen my house randomly.

She had not simply called the only person she trusted.

She had chosen me for a reason.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Kayla looked at the floor.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No more half-truths.””

She wiped her tears.

“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””

“That’s what everyone says after they get caught.””

She flinched.

Andrew looked at me.

“Emma.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

“We need to let her talk.””

I stared at him.

“You still want to protect her?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“I want the truth.””

That was the difference.

For the first time in weeks, everyone wanted the truth.

Not a version of it.

Not the version that made someone look better.

The actual truth.

I looked back at Kayla.

“Start talking.””

She sat down slowly.

Daniel remained standing near the wall, looking like he wanted to disappear.

Jason was still on speaker, silent.

Waiting.

Kayla took a deep breath.

“Before Jason and I broke up, I found something.””

“What?””

“A file.””

I frowned.

“What kind of file?””

She looked at Andrew.

Then away.

“It was about you.””

My body went cold.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“I found it on Michael’s laptop.””

Andrew’s expression changed.

“What kind of file?””

Kayla swallowed.

“Information.””

“What information?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation made my anger return.

“Kayla.””

“It was about Daniel.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Daniel.

“What about him?””

Kayla’s eyes filled with guilt.

“Michael said Daniel didn’t leave you because he stopped loving you.””

My heart stopped.

I hated that sentence.

Because part of me had wondered about it for years.

The unanswered questions.

The missing explanations.

The wound I pretended had healed.

“What did he say?””

Kayla looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“He said Daniel was forced to leave.””

I stared at Daniel.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Do not say my name like you have any right.””

He lowered his head.

Kayla continued.

“Michael said someone threatened him.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling you what I know.””

“No, you’re telling me what Michael told you.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“So you destroyed my life based on something a man told you?””

“I didn’t destroy your life.””

I looked at her.

“Didn’t you?””

She had no answer.

Andrew stepped forward.

“Why did Michael care about Emma?””

Kayla’s hands tightened.

“Because he thought Daniel’s disappearance was connected to something else.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He thought someone had been watching you.””

A chill went through me.

“Watching me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“That’s why I left.””

Everyone turned toward him.

I stared.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why?””

His voice broke slightly.

“Because I found out someone had been following you.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the ground beneath me had shifted.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The week before I left.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel, you broke up with me through a text message.””

His face fell.

“Because I was told to.””

The words barely registered.

“What?””

He looked at Andrew.

Then back at me.

“I was warned that if I stayed with you, something would happen.””

My breathing became shallow.

“Who warned you?””

“I never saw his face.””

The same answer.

The same mystery.

A faceless person controlling everyone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought leaving would protect you.””

“You broke me.””

“I know.””

“You destroyed my trust.””

“I know.””

“And now you show up three years later expecting what?””

“Nothing.””

His answer surprised me.

“I didn’t come back because I thought you would forgive me.””

“Then why?””

He looked at Kayla.

“Because I found out she was involved.””

Everyone looked at my sister.

Kayla immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“I’m sorry.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You’re trying to make me look guilty.””

“No.””

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I have proof.””

Kayla stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t.””

But he already unlocked the screen.

He showed Andrew first.

Then me.

It was a message thread.

Between Daniel and Michael.

My hands trembled as I read.

*Michael: She still trusts her sister. That’s the easiest way in.*

Another message.

*Daniel: Leave Emma out of this.*

Then:

*Michael: You don’t get to decide anymore. You walked away.*

I looked at Kayla.

She was crying.

I kept reading.

*Michael: Once Kayla moves in, everything becomes easier.*

My stomach turned.

The room felt like it was spinning.

“He planned this?””

Andrew asked.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he wanted something from Emma.””

I looked at Kayla.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.””

“Didn’t know what?””

“That he was using me.””

The pain in her voice sounded real.

But I had heard real pain before.

It didn’t always mean innocence.

I turned away.

“So Michael convinced you to come here.””

Kayla nodded.

“He told me you would help me.””

“Because I always do.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“He knew I would let you in.””

“Yes.””

“He knew I would trust you.””

“Yes.””

“And he knew you could get close to Andrew.””

Her face changed.

“I never wanted Andrew.””

The words came too quickly.

Too desperately.

I looked at her.

“You tested him.””

“I know.””

“You flirted with him.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t tell me what you didn’t want.””

Kayla started crying harder.

“I was angry.””

“At me?””

“At everyone.””

She covered her face.

“I hated that you had everything.””

I stared.

“I don’t have everything.””

“You have a husband who loves you.””

The sentence came out bitter.

“You have a home.””

“You have people who believe you.””

I swallowed.

“And you thought you deserved to take that?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“No, I didn’t.””

But it was too late.

The damage was already there.

Andrew looked at his phone.

“What about the photograph?””

Daniel answered.

“Michael sent it.””

“Why?””

“To make Emma doubt Andrew.””

I looked at my husband.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not relief.

Not completely.

Something closer to understanding.

Andrew had kept secrets.

But someone else had been carefully creating reasons for me to distrust him.

The manipulation was bigger than I realized.

Then Jason spoke again.

“There’s one more thing.””

Everyone went quiet.

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

Jason hesitated.

“Michael wasn’t the person who sent Kayla to your house.””

My heart sank.

“What do you mean?””

“Because Kayla already knew someone who could get her close to you.””

I looked at my sister.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Jason continued.

“Ask her about the money.””

Kayla froze.

My eyes narrowed.

“What money?””

Nobody answered.

“Kayla.””

She looked terrified.

“What money?””

Her lips parted.

Then she whispered:

“The money from Daniel.””

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel looked confused.

“What money?””

Kayla covered her mouth.

And that was when I realized.

She wasn’t afraid because she was caught.

She was afraid because the secret she had hidden…

was bigger than all the others.

“What did you take?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

Tears falling down her face.

Then she said the words I never expected.

“I took the money Daniel left for you.””

The room went completely silent.

Andrew looked at her.

Daniel looked shocked.

And I felt something inside me go numb.

Because suddenly I understood.

Kayla had not come to my house because she needed a place to stay.

She came because she thought I would never look closely enough to discover what she had stolen.

And before anyone could say another word, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

And saw a photograph of a bank transfer.

My name was on it.

The amount was six figures.

May you like

And beneath it was one sentence:

*Ask your sister where the rest of the money went.*
