Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Door
I stared at the photograph until my eyes started to hurt.
The image was grainy.
Dark.
Taken from somewhere inside our house.
But there was no mistaking it.
That was our living room.
That was the night Kayla arrived.
I remembered every detail.
The rain hitting the windows.
The wet footprints on the floor.
The way she held onto her suitcase like it was the only thing keeping her standing.
The way I hugged her and promised she was safe.
But now there was something else.
Something I hadn’t seen.
A second suitcase.
A black one.
Standing near the hallway.
Not Kayla’s.
Not ours.
I looked at Andrew.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes stayed fixed on the picture.
“I don’t know.””
I felt a strange mix of fear and anger.
“Andrew.””
“I’m serious.””
“You’re telling me someone was inside our house taking pictures and you don’t know?””
“I didn’t say that.””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I know that night was chaotic.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at me.
“I know Kayla wasn’t alone when she arrived.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Andrew exhaled.
“She told me someone dropped her off.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You knew someone was there?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I thought it wasn’t important.””
I stepped back.
“Not important?””
His face tightened.
“Emma, listen—”
“No. I have spent weeks feeling like I was losing my mind.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew things. You knew about Jason. You knew about Kayla’s affair.
You knew she wasn’t alone that night. And you stood beside me while I welcomed her into our home like nothing was wrong.””
Andrew looked down.
And that silence hurt.
Because it meant he knew I was right.
“I made a mistake,” he said quietly.
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because everyone suddenly had the same excuse.
A mistake.
A small word people used when the consequences belonged to someone else.
“Everyone keeps making mistakes around me.””
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to stay angry.
I wanted to walk away.
But something stopped me.
Because despite everything, Andrew was still the person who had stood beside me for years.
And I needed the truth more than I needed a fight.
“Who was the person with Kayla?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why did you say she wasn’t alone?””
“Because I saw a car.””
“When?””
“The night she arrived.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Kayla asked me not to.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me there was something bigger.
“Andrew.””
“She said she didn’t want you to worry.””
“That’s not a reason.””
“No.””
“Then what was the reason?””
He looked away.
“She said the person driving her was someone you knew.””
My heart stopped.
“Someone I knew?””
He nodded.
“Someone from your past.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“Andrew, stop saying that.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“Then tell me everything you know.””
He took a deep breath.
“The night Kayla arrived, I was downstairs when a car pulled away.””
“And?””
“I saw a man in the driver’s seat.””
My voice became quieter.
“Who?””
“I couldn’t see his face.””
“Then why would Kayla say I knew him?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked back at the photograph.
The second suitcase.
The hidden person.
The secrets.
None of it made sense.
Until one thought entered my mind.
I turned toward the house.
“Where is Kayla?””
Andrew followed my gaze.
“Upstairs.””
“I need to talk to her.””
We walked inside together.
But when we reached the stairs, we heard voices.
Kayla.
And someone else.
A man.
Andrew and I stopped.
My heart started racing.
The voice was low.
Calm.
Familiar.
Not familiar like someone I knew well.
Familiar like a memory I couldn’t place.
Andrew looked at me.
“Who is that?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
But then the man laughed.
And suddenly, I did.
I knew that laugh.
Not from recently.
From years ago.
Before Andrew.
Before this house.
Before my life became what it was.
I walked toward Kayla’s room.
The door was slightly open.
I pushed it.
And everything stopped.
Kayla was standing near the window.
And sitting on her bed was a man I never expected to see again.
My former fiancé.
Daniel.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel slowly stood.
“Emma.””
His voice sounded exactly the same.
And somehow that made it worse.
I stared at him.
“What are you doing here?””
Kayla immediately stepped forward.
“Emma, wait.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
“Let me explain.””
“You brought him here?””
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Kayla didn’t mean for you to find out like this.””
I turned to him.
“You don’t get to talk.””
He stopped.
Andrew stepped beside me.
“Emma, who is he?””
I swallowed.
“This is Daniel.””
Andrew looked at me.
“Your Daniel?””
I nodded.
The one person I thought I would never see again.
The man who left me three years before I met Andrew.
The man who disappeared after breaking every promise he made.
The man I had buried in my past.
“What is he doing here?”” Andrew asked.
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
I looked at Kayla.
“How long?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Emma…”
“How long have you been talking to him?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I felt something inside me collapse.
“Since before I moved in.””
Andrew looked shocked.
“Kayla.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t plan this.””
“Plan what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
And finally said:
“Bringing him back into your life.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I wanted to explain.””
“You wanted to explain?””
My voice shook.
“Three years.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“You disappeared for three years.””
“I was wrong.””
“You broke off our engagement through a text message.””
“I know.””
“You left me with no explanation.””
“I was ashamed.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Now you’re in my house?””
“I didn’t come here to hurt you.””
“Then why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Kayla spoke.
“Because he found something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
Daniel reached into his jacket.
And pulled out an old envelope.
My name was written on the front.
My handwriting.
Something I hadn’t seen in years.
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The letter you wrote me before I left.””
My face went cold.
“That’s impossible.””
“You thought I destroyed it.””
I stared at the envelope.
Because I remembered that letter.
I had written everything in it.
Every fear.
Every hope.
Every secret.
I had written things I had never told anyone.
Not Andrew.
Not Kayla.
Nobody.
“How did you get that?””
Daniel looked at Kayla.
And my sister immediately looked away.
My heart sank.
“Kayla?””
She whispered:
“I found it.””
“Where?””
She didn’t answer.
“Where did you find my private letter?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Emma…”
“Where?””
She finally looked at me.
And the answer was worse than I expected.
“In Andrew’s office.””
I turned toward my husband.
“What?””
Andrew looked genuinely confused.
“I don’t have that.””
Daniel opened the envelope.
And pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Then he said something that made the entire room go silent.
“Emma, you need to know the truth.””
He looked at Andrew.
“Because your husband wasn’t the only person keeping secrets from you.””
And then he placed the letter on the bed.
But before I could reach for it, Kayla’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And her face immediately turned white.
“What?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
She just whispered one name.
The name that made Andrew’s expression change.
The name that made Daniel take a step back.
May you like
The name of the person who had been watching us from the beginning.
“Jason.””
