Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Buried For Two Years

I watched the video again.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Each time, I hoped I would notice something different.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything that would let me believe my father wasn't standing in my house, handing Ashley a folder full of documents designed to take my daughter away.

But the truth didn't change.

The man in the video was my father.

Thomas Miller.

The same hands that held Emma after Sarah died.

The same hands that helped me carry the flowers at my wife's funeral.

The same hands that now appeared to be helping destroy my family.

"I need to talk to him.""

Rachel looked at me carefully.

"Daniel.""

"I need answers.""

"Don't go alone.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because right now, you're hurt.""

"I'm angry.""

"Exactly.""

I hated that she was right.

Anger made people careless.

And Ashley had spent months waiting for me to react emotionally.

She wanted me to explode.

She wanted me to look unstable.

I couldn't give her that.

Not anymore.

I took a deep breath.

"Then I'll be careful.""

Rachel nodded.

"But record everything.""

I looked at the phone in my hand.

The same phone that had finally exposed the truth.

"Everything.""

My father opened the door before I knocked.

He looked tired.

Older.

Like he hadn't slept.

"Daniel.""

I held up my phone.

His face changed immediately.

He knew.

"What did you find?""

I stepped inside.

"You tell me.""

The silence between us felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

I placed the phone on the table.

Played the video.

My father watched himself walk into my house.

Hand Ashley a folder.

Then leave.

When it ended, he didn't deny it.

That hurt more than if he had lied.

"You knew.""

His shoulders lowered.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"How long?""

"Daniel—"

"How long?""

He closed his eyes.

"Since before Ashley moved in.""

The room went quiet.

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Before?""

My voice cracked.

"Before she moved into my house?""

"Yes.""

"Before she met Emma every day?""

"Yes.""

I stepped back.

I felt like I didn't know this man.

"What did you do?""

"I made a mistake.""

"No.""

My voice became louder.

"You made choices.""

He looked down.

"I thought I was helping you.""

"By creating fake custody papers?""

"No.""

"By giving her my signature?""

"No.""

"By letting her convince everyone I was an unfit father?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Daniel.""

"Answer me.""

He sat down.

Slowly.

"I was scared.""

The words surprised me.

"Of what?""

"You.""

I stared.

"Me?""

"Not you hurting anyone.""

He shook his head.

"Of watching you disappear.""

I didn't understand.

"What does that mean?""

"After Sarah died, you stopped living.""

I looked away.

"I was grieving.""

"You stopped seeing friends.""

"I was grieving.""

"You stopped taking care of yourself.""

"I was grieving.""

"You don't understand.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"I don't understand why my own father decided grief meant I couldn't be a father.""

He was silent.

Then he said:

"Because I saw Sarah.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

"The night before the accident.""

I froze.

"What are you talking about?""

He looked at me.

"I never told you this.""

"Obviously.""

"Sarah called me.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Why?""

"She was worried.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Worried about what?""

My father looked away.

"About you.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Daniel—"

"No.""

I stood.

"Don't rewrite history.""

"I'm not.""

"Sarah loved me.""

"I know.""

"She loved our daughter.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you talking like she wanted you to take Emma away?""

His face tightened.

"She didn't.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

"Then what?""

He looked at his hands.

"She said you were struggling.""

I felt anger rising.

"Because I was working two jobs.""

"Because you were exhausted.""

"Because I wanted to give Emma a good life.""

"I know.""

"Then why?""

My father looked at me.

"Because Ashley showed me messages.""

"What messages?""

"Between you and Sarah.""

I stopped.

"What?""

"She showed me conversations where Sarah said she was worried about your stress.""

My heart started pounding.

"Those messages don't exist.""

"Daniel.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"Sarah never wrote those things.""

"How do you know?""

"Because Ashley never knew Sarah.""

My father went silent.

And suddenly, something clicked.

The timing.

The documents.

The old messages.

The fake signature.

Ashley had access to my house.

My phone.

My computer.

Everything.

"She stole them.""

My father looked confused.

"What?""

"She created a story.""

I grabbed my phone.

"She found my worst moments and turned them into evidence.""

My father's face changed.

Because he finally understood.

He hadn't been helping protect Emma.

He had been helping someone manipulate him.

"Where did she get the messages?"" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Dad.""

He swallowed.

"From Sarah's old laptop.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"After the funeral, I kept some of her things.""

"Where?""

"Storage.""

"Who had access?""

He looked at me.

And neither of us spoke.

Because we already knew.

Ashley.

I left my father's house feeling something I never expected.

Not just anger.

Disappointment.

The kind that comes from realizing someone you trusted failed you when you needed them most.

But there was one thing I finally had.

The truth.

And the truth gave me power.

That evening, Rachel and I organized everything.

The audio recording.

The video.

The fake documents.

The timeline.

The evidence of manipulation.

Then Rachel found something.

"Daniel.""

I looked up.

"What?""

She turned her laptop toward me.

"I traced the document file.""

"We already know it came from your father's computer.""

"Yes.""

"Then what?""

She pointed at the screen.

"The file wasn't created by your father.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"The original creator information was changed.""

"Meaning?""

"Someone altered the metadata.""

My heart sank.

"Can you find who?""

Rachel nodded slowly.

"Maybe.""

"How?""

"There is one hidden backup.""

"Where?""

She clicked another folder.

My eyes moved across the screen.

A username appeared.

Not my father's.

Not Ashley's.

Not Lena's.

A name I didn't recognize.

"Who is that?""

Rachel zoomed in.

Then she looked at me.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

Her expression changed.

"This account belongs to someone who worked at your hospital.""

I stared.

"Why would someone from my hospital help Ashley?""

Rachel didn't answer.

Because the answer was impossible.

Unless there was something we didn't know.

Something Ashley had been hiding from everyone.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Daniel, you need to stop digging.""

I stood.

"Who is this?""

"You don't understand what Ashley found.""

"Who are you?""

"You think she is trying to take your daughter.""

I looked at Rachel.

"Who are you?""

The man ignored the question.

"She is trying to protect a secret.""

My grip tightened.

"What secret?""

A pause.

Then:

"The accident that killed Sarah wasn't what you think.""

My heart stopped.

"What did you say?""

"Your wife didn't just die.""

The man's voice became quieter.

"Someone caused it.""

I couldn't speak.

Rachel was watching me.

The man continued.

"And Ashley knows who.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

For two years, I had lived with one painful truth.

Sarah was gone.

A tragic accident.

A horrible moment.

A loss I would never recover from.

But now someone was telling me something impossible.

That Sarah's death wasn't an accident.

May you like

And the person who had been trying to steal my daughter...

Might have known the truth about how I lost my wife.
