Chapter 2: The Document With My Name On It

I stopped breathing.

Not because I was afraid Ashley would hear me.

Because I was afraid of what I was about to hear next.

The closet was dark and cramped, but I barely felt the cold floor beneath my shoes. My entire body had become focused on one thing.

The sound of my girlfriend's voice.

The same voice that had whispered goodnight to Emma.

The same voice that had told me, "I love that little girl like she's my own.""

Now it carried something completely different.

Control.

Calculation.

Cruelty.

I held my phone tighter, making sure the recording was still running.

Outside the closet door, papers shifted.

Emma was silent.

Too silent.

"Ashley?"" Emma finally asked.

Her voice was small.

"What did you find?""

Ashley gave a quiet laugh.

Not a happy laugh.

A patient laugh.

The kind adults used when they wanted children to feel powerless.

"I found proof that you need help, Emma.""

"I don't need help.""

"Everyone needs help sometimes.""

"I just want Daddy.""

The words almost broke me.

I pressed my forehead against the closet wall.

Ashley sighed.

"You always say that.""

"Because he's my dad.""

"And I'm trying to make things easier for him.""

"No, you're not.""

A pause.

A dangerous pause.

Then Ashley's voice became colder.

"You need to be careful with how you talk to me.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The real Ashley.

Not the woman who brought Emma ice cream after school.

Not the woman who helped her with homework.

Not the woman who cried at Sarah's memorial service and said she wanted to "protect this family.""

This was the woman my daughter had been alone with.

"Emma," Ashley said, "do you know what happens when a parent can't handle a child?""

Emma didn't answer.

"They make difficult choices.""

"What choices?""

"Sometimes they realize they need someone else to raise the child.""

My hands curled into fists.

I wanted to open that door.

I wanted to walk out.

I wanted to see the look on Ashley's face when she realized I had heard every word.

But I didn't.

Not yet.

I needed proof.

I needed everything.

Because people like Ashley didn't just hurt you.

They made you look crazy for noticing.

"I don't want to go away," Emma whispered.

Ashley lowered her voice.

"Then you should stop making your father think you're difficult.""

"I'm not difficult.""

"Your father is tired, Emma.""

"He loves me.""

"Of course he does.""

A pause.

"But love isn't always enough.""

I felt something inside me break.

Because those were the exact words I had used after Sarah died.

Love isn't always enough.

I had told myself that during the darkest months.

Love couldn't bring Sarah back.

Love couldn't erase Emma's nightmares.

Love couldn't fix everything.

Ashley had taken my own words.

And turned them into a weapon.

Then I heard the paper move again.

"What's that?"" Emma asked.

"This?""

"Yeah.""

"This is something your father signed.""

My blood went cold.

"No, he didn't.""

Ashley chuckled.

"Why are you so sure?""

"Because Daddy wouldn't send me away.""

"People change.""

"He wouldn't.""

"Look.""

A chair scraped across the floor.

I imagined Ashley kneeling beside her.

Showing her the document.

"The paper says your father believes you need a different living arrangement.""

"No.""

"It says he's worried about your behavior.""

"No.""

"It says he's asking for temporary placement.""

Emma started crying.

"No.""

My eyes burned.

Not from tears.

From anger.

Ashley had created a fake reality where Emma was already abandoned.

She had been slowly convincing my daughter that losing me was inevitable.

"Ashley," Emma cried, "Daddy didn't write that.""

"You don't know what adults do.""

"You're lying.""

The room went completely silent.

For a moment, I thought Ashley might finally stop.

Instead, her voice dropped.

"Excuse me?""

Emma sniffed.

"You're lying because Daddy would never do that.""

A chair moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Then came a sound.

A sharp gasp.

My entire body reacted.

I reached for the closet handle.

But stopped.

Because Emma spoke.

And her voice wasn't scared.

It was angry.

"You're hurting me again.""

Ashley didn't answer.

"You're hurting me.""

The words repeated.

Then Ashley said something that made my stomach twist.

"You should have learned by now.""

I pushed the closet door open.

Not fully.

Just enough to see.

Ashley was standing beside the dining table.

Emma sat in the chair.

Her arms were crossed against her chest.

Ashley held a folder.

A thick folder.

And on top of it was a piece of paper with my name printed across the bottom.

My signature.

Or something that looked like it.

My heart pounded.

I stepped out.

"Ashley.""

She turned.

The color drained from her face.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely afraid.

Not because she had hurt Emma.

Because she had been caught.

Emma looked at me.

"Daddy...""

I walked past Ashley and immediately went to my daughter.

"Are you okay?""

She nodded, but tears were running down her face.

I looked at Ashley.

"What is that?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"What is that document with my signature on it?""

Her expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

The excuses arrived.

"I can explain.""

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

That scared her more.

"No more explanations.""

She swallowed.

"You were hiding in the closet?""

"Yes.""

"You don't trust me?""

I looked at Emma.

Then back at her.

"Not anymore.""

Ashley stepped forward.

"You're misunderstanding what happened.""

"I heard everything.""

"You heard part of a conversation.""

"I heard you tell my daughter that I wanted to send her away.""

"I was trying to prepare her.""

"Prepare her for what?""

She looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

"Answer me.""

"For reality.""

"What reality?""

"That you can't keep doing this.""

I stared at her.

"Doing what?""

"Being a single father who works constantly and pretending everything is fine.""

Her voice became emotional.

"You leave me alone with all of this.""

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

"You volunteered.""

"No, I didn't.""

"You begged me to let you help.""

"Because I love you.""

"Then why does my daughter think you hate her?""

Ashley looked at Emma.

And something about that look made Emma move closer to me.

Not toward Ashley.

Toward me.

"I don't hate her.""

"Then explain the bruises.""

"I grabbed her because she was running away.""

"You grabbed her hard enough to leave fingerprints.""

"I was scared.""

"Of a seven-year-old?""

"Of losing control of the situation.""

There it was.

A sentence she couldn't take back.

I stared at her.

"Losing control?""

Ashley rubbed her forehead.

"You don't understand.""

"You're right.""

I picked up the folder.

"I don't understand why you forged my signature.""

Her face changed again.

"I didn't forge anything.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were several pages.

School reports.

Behavior notes.

A letter.

And a document titled:

*Temporary Child Placement Agreement.*

My hands shook.

Because the signature at the bottom looked exactly like mine.

The same curve.

The same initials.

The same pressure marks.

But it wasn't mine.

"When did you make this?""

Ashley crossed her arms.

"You need to calm down.""

"No.""

"You aren't thinking clearly.""

"No.""

I looked directly at her.

"You planned this.""

Her silence was the answer.

Emma stepped closer.

"Daddy...""

I turned.

She pointed at the paper.

"She made me practice saying things.""

My chest tightened.

"What things?""

Emma looked at Ashley.

Then whispered:

"That I was bad.""

Ashley immediately interrupted.

"Emma.""

"No.""

I put my hand up.

"Let her speak.""

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"She said if I told people I was scared, they would think I needed a different family.""

I felt sick.

"Who told you that?""

"Ashley.""

Ashley shook her head.

"She's confused.""

Emma continued.

"She made me say that I wanted to live somewhere else.""

My grip tightened around the folder.

"Why?""

Ashley finally snapped.

"Because someone has to think about the future!""

The room froze.

Her mask slipped.

"You think you can do this forever?"" she yelled.

"Work every night? Come home exhausted? Pretend Emma is okay?""

Emma flinched.

I moved between them.

Ashley noticed.

And her face hardened.

"You always choose her.""

The words hung in the air.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they confirmed everything.

"You were never trying to help me," I said.

Ashley looked away.

"You were trying to replace her.""

"No.""

"Yes.""

"You think this is about jealousy?""

"I think this is about you wanting a life without the reminder that Sarah existed.""

Her eyes flashed.

"Don't bring her into this.""

"Why? Because she was the one person you couldn't compete with?""

Ashley grabbed her purse.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

"I know exactly what I'm doing.""

"What?""

I held up my phone.

Her face changed.

"What is that?""

"The truth.""

She stared at the device.

"You recorded me?""

"Everything.""

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Ashley smiled.

A slow, terrifying smile.

And that was when I realized something.

She wasn't afraid anymore.

She looked almost relieved.

"Good.""

I frowned.

"What?""

She stepped closer.

"You recorded exactly what I wanted you to record.""

The room went cold.

"What are you talking about?""

Ashley picked up the folder.

"You think you're the only one who prepared?""

She pulled out another document.

Then placed it on the table.

"This is the part you don't know.""

I looked down.

At the page.

At my name.

At my signature.

And beneath it...

A date.

A date from three weeks earlier.

Three weeks before Emma showed me the bruises.

Three weeks before I ever suspected Ashley.

My stomach dropped.

Because according to that document...

May you like

I had already agreed to give up custody of my daughter.

And the signature looked exactly like mine.
