Chapter 4: The Secret Someone Wanted Me To Find

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

It wasn't the image itself that scared me.

It was the timing.

The date.

The place.

The impossible question sitting between us.

Why was I there?

Except I wasn't.

I knew that.

I remembered that day.

Every minute.

I had worked a twelve-hour shift at the hospital. I had come home exhausted, eaten dinner standing at the kitchen counter, and fallen asleep on the couch before midnight.

At least, that's what I remembered.

But the photograph showed something else.

A version of reality I couldn't explain.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked again.

Ashley didn't answer immediately.

She watched my face.

Studying my confusion.

Enjoying it.

"Does it bother you that much?""

"Answer me.""

She walked around the table slowly.

"Because if you don't remember being there, maybe you should ask yourself why.""

My stomach tightened.

"Stop talking in circles.""

"I'm trying to make you understand.""

"No. You're trying to make me doubt myself.""

For the first time, she looked offended.

Then she laughed quietly.

"You make everything sound so dramatic.""

I looked at Emma.

She was standing near the stairs with her small backpack in her hands.

She had packed quickly.

Too quickly.

Like she was afraid we would change our minds.

That broke something inside me.

A child shouldn't have to prepare to run away from her own home.

I turned back to Ashley.

"I want your phone.""

She raised an eyebrow.

"My phone?""

"The original photo.""

"Why?""

"Because I want the metadata.""

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

"You watch too many crime shows.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I've spent years working around evidence.""

I had seen families destroyed because people believed the first story they heard.

I had seen people manipulate records, conversations, and memories.

And now it was happening inside my own house.

"Give me the phone.""

Ashley shook her head.

"No.""

"Then tell me who sent you that picture.""

"I can't.""

"Can't or won't?""

She looked away.

That was the answer.

Before I could say anything else, my own phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

*You need to stop asking questions about Ashley. You don't know what you're uncovering.*

I looked up.

Ashley was watching me.

She knew.

"What is it?"" she asked.

I locked my screen.

"Nothing.""

A small smile appeared on her face.

"You should know something.""

"What?""

"Secrets don't stay buried forever.""

The way she said it made me realize something.

Ashley wasn't the only person involved.

And that scared me more.

Because Ashley was reckless.

But someone else was careful.

Someone else was planning.

I picked up my keys.

"We're leaving.""

Ashley stepped in front of the door.

"No.""

I stared at her.

"Move.""

"You don't get to walk away after accusing me.""

"You hurt my daughter.""

"I did not.""

"Then why is she afraid of you?""

Ashley opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then her expression hardened.

"You really think you're the hero here?""

I didn't answer.

"You think taking her away fixes everything?""

"Yes.""

"No.""

She pointed toward Emma.

"Because she needs stability.""

Emma shrank back.

I noticed.

And Ashley noticed too.

"Look at her," Ashley said.

"She needs someone calm.""

I stepped between them.

"Don't.""

"Don't what?""

"Don't pretend this is about Emma.""

Her face tightened.

"This family was falling apart before I came along.""

"No.""

My voice became quiet.

"It was healing.""

Ashley looked hurt.

But I didn't believe it anymore.

"You were never trying to help us heal.""

She stared at me.

"You replaced Sarah's pictures.""

I froze.

"What?""

She looked away.

"I cleaned up the house.""

My heart dropped.

"What pictures?""

"The old ones.""

"What did you do with them?""

"I put them away.""

"Where?""

She didn't answer.

"Where, Ashley?""

"I thought it would be healthier.""

The anger came instantly.

"You removed pictures of my wife?""

"They were everywhere.""

"Because she was Emma's mother.""

"Because you were living in the past.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You wanted us to forget.""

She looked at Emma.

"No. I wanted us to move forward.""

Emma whispered:

"Daddy?""

I turned.

"What is it?""

"She put Mommy's scarf in the trash.""

Everything stopped.

I looked at Ashley.

"What?""

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"She said I was too old to sleep with it.""

Ashley immediately shook her head.

"That's not what happened.""

"What happened?""

"I moved it.""

"Where?""

"I don't remember.""

Emma hugged herself.

"You threw it away.""

I watched Ashley carefully.

A person falsely accused usually reacts with shock.

Confusion.

Fear.

Ashley reacted with irritation.

Like Emma had inconvenienced her.

That was enough.

I opened the front door.

Ashley grabbed my arm.

"Wait.""

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

Her face changed.

"You're making a mistake.""

"Maybe.""

I looked at Emma.

"But it's a mistake I'll make protecting my daughter.""

Ashley stepped back.

And then she said something I would remember forever.

"You're going to regret choosing her.""

The words hung in the air.

Not because they were angry.

Because they were honest.

She meant them.

I took Emma outside.

We stayed at my brother's house that night.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the bruises.

The closet.

The fake documents.

The edited video.

The photograph.

By morning, I had contacted a family attorney.

I expected chaos.

I expected Ashley to deny everything.

I didn't expect what happened next.

At 9:14 a.m., my attorney called.

"Daniel, I need you to come in immediately.""

I heard the concern in his voice.

"What happened?""

"There was a filing submitted this morning.""

"What kind of filing?""

A pause.

Then:

"A custody emergency request.""

My stomach dropped.

"From who?""

"You know who.""

I closed my eyes.

"Ashley?""

"No.""

The answer made my heart stop.

"Then who?""

My attorney lowered his voice.

"Your daughter's biological grandparents.""

I went completely still.

"Emma's grandparents?""

"Yes.""

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because Sarah's parents haven't spoken to me in almost two years.""

"Apparently they have a different version of events.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What version?""

A long silence.

Then my attorney said:

"The petition claims you have been emotionally unstable since Sarah's death and that you have been considering giving Emma up for adoption.""

I looked across the room.

Emma was sitting on the couch, coloring.

A normal seven-year-old moment.

A moment Ashley had tried to destroy.

"That's not true.""

"I know.""

"How did they get that information?""

My attorney hesitated.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

"There are documents attached.""

"What documents?""

"The same ones Ashley has.""

My heart sank.

"The custody agreement?""

"Yes.""

I stood.

"That means Ashley gave them the forged paperwork.""

"Maybe.""

"No.""

I looked at the photograph on the table.

The one I couldn't explain.

The one someone wanted Ashley to have.

"This goes deeper.""

My attorney was quiet.

Then he said:

"Daniel, there is something else.""

"What?""

"The grandparents included a witness statement.""

"From who?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Someone who says they saw you admit you couldn't handle being Emma's father.""

I felt cold.

"Who?""

My attorney read the name.

And the moment I heard it, everything changed.

Because it wasn't Ashley.

It wasn't one of her friends.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone who knew Sarah.

Someone who had been in my house.

Someone who had held Emma after the funeral.

Someone I trusted.

My attorney said the name again.

And I realized Ashley's plan had been bigger than stealing my daughter.

She had been building an entire story.

May you like

A story where everyone would believe I was the problem.

And the person helping her destroy my life was the last person I ever expected.
