Chapter 6: The Father Who Knew Too Much

I read the message from my attorney three times.

Not because I didn't understand the words.

Because I couldn't accept them.

*The document was created on a computer registered to your father.*

My father.

Thomas Miller.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who held Emma after Sarah died and whispered, "Grandpa is always here.""

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

There had to be another explanation.

There had to be.

"Daniel?""

My brother's voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

Mark was standing in the doorway, holding a cup of coffee.

"You look like you've seen a ghost.""

I locked my phone.

"Do you know where Dad is?""

Mark's expression changed.

"Why?""

"Just answer me.""

He studied my face.

Then slowly put the coffee down.

"He's at home.""

"Did he talk to you recently?""

"Yesterday.""

"About me?""

A pause.

"Why are you asking?""

I stood.

"Because I think he helped someone try to take Emma away from me.""

Mark went completely still.

"What?""

"I said I think Dad helped create fake custody documents.""

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

Too confidently.

I looked at him.

"You know something.""

"I don't.""

"Mark.""

He looked away.

And that small movement told me more than words.

"How long have you known?""

"Known what?""

"That Dad was involved.""

My brother sighed.

"Daniel, don't do this.""

"Don't do what?""

"Turn everyone into an enemy.""

I felt anger rising.

"Everyone?""

I pointed toward the stairs.

"My daughter has bruises.""

His face softened.

"I know.""

"I found out Ashley was lying to her.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you defending them?""

"I'm not.""

"It sounds like you are.""

Mark ran a hand through his hair.

"Because Dad told me things.""

"What things?""

"That you weren't doing well.""

I laughed.

A bitter, empty sound.

"Of course he did.""

"He said after Sarah died, you changed.""

"I grieved.""

"He said you were struggling.""

"I was.""

"He said Emma needed more stability.""

I stared at him.

"Did he say that?""

Mark didn't answer.

"Did he?""

"Yes.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"I need to talk to him.""

"Daniel.""

I stopped.

"Be careful.""

The warning surprised me.

"Why?""

Mark looked uncomfortable.

"Because Dad isn't the only person involved.""

I turned.

"What does that mean?""

He hesitated.

Then said:

"A few months ago, he asked me if I still had copies of old family documents.""

"What documents?""

"Your handwriting samples.""

My blood went cold.

"What?""

"Old birthday cards. Notes. Anything with your signature.""

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

"Mark.""

He looked down.

"I thought he wanted them for something harmless.""

"What?""

"He said he was helping you organize legal paperwork.""

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

My father hadn't just helped create a lie.

He had helped someone recreate me.

My signature.

My words.

My identity.

I drove to my father's house alone.

The entire way, memories kept attacking me.

Christmas mornings.

Family dinners.

Sarah laughing in his backyard.

Emma sitting on his shoulders.

I wanted to believe those memories meant something.

But I also knew something else.

People weren't always who they had been.

Sometimes they were only who they chose to become.

When I arrived, Dad was sitting outside.

Like he was expecting me.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was the folder on the table beside him.

My heart sank.

"You knew I was coming.""

He looked up.

His face was tired.

"Your lawyer contacted me.""

"Of course.""

"Daniel.""

"No.""

I walked closer.

"Don't say my name like you're worried about me.""

His expression tightened.

"I am worried about you.""

"Are you?""

I pointed at the folder.

"What's that?""

He didn't answer.

I picked it up.

"Dad.""

"Put it down.""

That was the wrong thing to say.

Because fear sounded different from innocence.

I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

The same documents Ashley had shown me.

The same fake custody papers.

But there was something else.

A handwritten letter.

My handwriting.

Or something pretending to be mine.

I read the first line.

*I believe Emma would benefit from living with a more stable family environment.*

My hands shook.

"I never wrote this.""

Dad looked away.

"I know.""

The words hit me harder than anything else.

"You know?""

Silence.

"You know I didn't write this?""

"Yes.""

"Then why do you have it?""

He closed his eyes.

"Because I was trying to fix things.""

I stared at him.

"Fix what?""

"Your life.""

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"You were trying to fix your idea of my life.""

He looked at me.

"Daniel, after Sarah died, you weren't yourself.""

"Nobody is themselves after losing their wife.""

"You were drowning.""

"I was grieving.""

"You were angry.""

"At myself.""

"You stopped taking care of yourself.""

"Because I was taking care of Emma.""

Dad shook his head.

"You don't see it.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I don't see how you thought taking my daughter away was helping.""

His face changed.

And for the first time, I saw something that looked like regret.

"I didn't want to take her away.""

"Then what did you want?""

"I wanted you to get help.""

"By forging documents?""

"I didn't forge anything.""

"Then what did you do?""

He looked down.

"I gave Ashley access.""

My stomach turned.

"Access to what?""

"Your old paperwork.""

"My signatures.""

Silence.

"Dad.""

He looked at me.

"I didn't know what she planned.""

"But you knew she was making something.""

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

"You let someone use me.""

"I thought she was trying to protect Emma.""

"She hurt Emma.""

His face fell.

"What?""

I laughed quietly.

"You didn't know?""

"No.""

"She locked my seven-year-old daughter in a closet.""

Dad stood immediately.

"Daniel, that's not—"

"Don't.""

He stopped.

"Do not defend her.""

He sat back down.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not like my father.

Like a man who had made a terrible mistake and was only now realizing the cost.

"She showed me videos.""

"What videos?""

"Of you.""

"Edited videos.""

"I didn't know.""

"Did you ask?""

He looked away.

"No.""

That hurt.

More than the documents.

Because my father knew me.

He knew my heart.

And he still believed the worst version of me.

"Why?""

He swallowed.

"Because I saw how tired you were.""

"Tired isn't broken.""

"I know that now.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You don't.""

I placed the folder on the table.

"Because if you knew, you would have asked me.""

A long silence followed.

Then my father whispered:

"She told me Sarah's parents were also concerned.""

I froze.

"What?""

"Ashley said Lena believed you were struggling too.""

Everything clicked.

Ashley wasn't collecting random people.

She was building agreement.

Making everyone tell the same story.

Creating a reality where no one questioned her.

I looked at my father.

"Where is Ashley now?""

He frowned.

"Why?""

"Because I need to know what she does next.""

"Daniel.""

"Where is she?""

He hesitated.

Then said:

"She called me this morning.""

My heart stopped.

"What did she say?""

Dad looked terrified.

"She said if you found out the truth, she had another option.""

"What option?""

He reached into the folder.

Pulled out one final document.

Then handed it to me.

I read the title.

And every piece of fear inside me came alive.

*Emergency Guardianship Petition Based on Child Endangerment.*

My hands went numb.

"This isn't signed.""

"No.""

"Then why do you have it?""

Dad looked at me.

"Because Ashley said she was going to file it if you refused to cooperate.""

I stared at the page.

Child endangerment.

The words alone could destroy everything.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

"Ashley filed the emergency petition.""

My heart sank.

"Lena?""

She whispered:

"Daniel, you need to listen carefully.""

"Why?""

"Because I just found out the documents she showed us weren't the only documents she made.""

I gripped the phone.

"What else?""

A pause.

Then Lena said the words that changed everything.

"She has a recording of Emma saying she doesn't want to live with you.""

I looked at my father.

At the fake documents.

At the empty space where my trust used to be.

May you like

And I realized Ashley wasn't trying to prove I was a bad father.

She was trying to make my own daughter become the evidence against me.
