Chapter 7: The Recording That Was Never Supposed To Exist

The call ended.

But Lena's words stayed.

*She has a recording of Emma saying she doesn't want to live with you.*

I stood in my father's driveway, holding the phone against my ear even though there was no one there anymore.

A recording.

A child's voice.

My daughter.

Used as a weapon.

Again.

I looked down at the emergency guardianship petition in my hand.

The fake custody agreement.

The forged signature.

The edited video.

The witness statements.

Everything Ashley had built had one purpose.

To make people believe Emma was the problem.

And now she had found a way to make Emma's own voice support her lie.

"Dad.""

He looked at me.

"What?""

"Did Ashley ever ask to be alone with Emma?""

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

"Daniel...""

"Answer me.""

He looked away.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"When?""

"Several times.""

"Why?""

"She said Emma needed someone to talk to.""

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"Someone to talk to.""

Dad lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know.""

"You keep saying that.""

"I didn't.""

"But you never asked.""

He had no answer.

Because there wasn't one.

I walked back to my car.

"Dad.""

I stopped.

"I'm sorry.""

I stood there for a moment.

Two words.

Two words I had waited years to hear from him.

But they came too late.

I turned around.

"Sorry doesn't fix what happened.""

Then I drove away.

My attorney, Rachel, was waiting when I arrived at her office.

She immediately stood.

"Daniel.""

"What happened?""

She looked at the folder in my hand.

"You found more.""

"Yes.""

I placed everything on her desk.

"She has an emergency guardianship petition.""

Rachel opened it.

Her eyes moved quickly across the pages.

"This is serious.""

"I know.""

"Where did you get this?""

"My father.""

She looked up.

"Your father?""

I nodded.

"He helped her.""

Rachel sat back.

"Why?""

"Because she convinced him I was failing.""

Rachel was quiet for a moment.

Then she picked up another document.

"Daniel, there's something you need to understand.""

"What?""

"If Ashley files this, the court won't only look at what she did.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means they will examine everything.""

"Good.""

"Everything.""

She emphasized the word.

"Your work schedule. Your mental health after Sarah's death. Your parenting history. Any statements you've made.""

I understood.

Ashley wasn't trying to prove she was perfect.

She was trying to make me imperfect.

And the worst part?

She had years of my grief to use against me.

"Can we stop her?""

Rachel looked at the documents.

"We need evidence.""

"I have recordings.""

"Of Ashley?""

"Yes.""

"Good.""

"She admitted things.""

Rachel nodded.

"That helps.""

"But?""

She didn't answer immediately.

I knew there was a but.

"But what?""

"We need the recording of her manipulating Emma.""

My stomach dropped.

"The one where she makes Emma say she doesn't want to live with me.""

"Yes.""

"How do we get it?""

Rachel looked at me carefully.

"We find it.""

That evening, I sat beside Emma on my brother's couch.

She was drawing.

A house.

A sun.

Three people holding hands.

Me.

Her.

And Sarah.

I watched her carefully.

"Sweetheart?""

She looked up.

"Yeah?""

"Can I ask you something?""

She nodded.

"Did Ashley ever ask you to say things?""

Her pencil stopped.

Immediately.

That reaction told me everything.

"Emma?""

She looked down.

"She said I shouldn't tell.""

My chest tightened.

"Why?""

"She said people would think I was making stories.""

I moved closer.

"Emma, nobody will ever be angry at you for telling me the truth.""

She looked at me.

"Even if I said something bad?""

"Especially then.""

She swallowed.

"She made me practice.""

My heart sank.

"What did she make you practice?""

Emma's fingers tightened around the pencil.

"She asked me questions.""

"What kind of questions?""

"Like...""

She looked uncomfortable.

"Like if I felt safe with you.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What did you say?""

"I said yes.""

"And then?""

"She said I didn't understand.""

Emma's voice became quieter.

"She said sometimes kids love their parents but still need somewhere else to go.""

The same words.

The same idea.

The same poison.

I held her hand.

"Did she record you?""

Emma nodded.

"One time.""

"When?""

"At home.""

"Where?""

"In the living room.""

I looked at Rachel's business card on the table.

Then back at Emma.

"Do you remember what happened before she recorded you?""

Emma thought.

"She was angry.""

"Why?""

"Because I wouldn't say the right words.""

My stomach turned.

"The right words?""

"She told me to say I was scared of you.""

The room went silent.

"What did you say?""

"I said I wasn't.""

"And then?""

"She got mad.""

"What happened?""

Emma looked toward the floor.

"She said if I didn't help her, everyone would believe I was the reason Mommy died.""

I felt like someone had punched me.

No child should carry that sentence.

No child.

I pulled her into my arms.

"You know that's not true, right?""

She nodded against me.

"I know.""

"Who told you?""

"Grandpa.""

I froze.

My father.

Even after everything.

He had at least protected that truth.

"What else did Ashley say?""

Emma hesitated.

Then whispered:

"She said she had a surprise.""

"What surprise?""

"I don't know.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because Ashley always had another move.

The next morning, Rachel called.

"Daniel, I need you to come in.""

Her voice was serious.

I arrived twenty minutes later.

She had her laptop open.

On the screen was an audio file.

"Where did you get this?""

Rachel looked at me.

"From Lena.""

I stared.

"Lena gave it to you?""

"She contacted me.""

"Why?""

"Because she says she realized Ashley lied to her.""

I didn't know how to feel.

Relief.

Anger.

Both.

"Play it.""

Rachel clicked.

Static.

Then Ashley's voice.

"Again.""

Emma's voice followed.

"I don't want to.""

"Emma, we already talked about this.""

"No.""

"You want to help your daddy, don't you?""

Silence.

Then Emma whispered:

"Yes.""

"Then say it.""

A pause.

"I don't want to live with Daddy.""

I closed my eyes.

Pain hit me instantly.

Hearing my daughter say those words almost destroyed me.

But then Ashley spoke.

"Good.""

The recording continued.

"Now say why.""

"I don't know.""

"Yes, you do.""

"I don't.""

"Emma.""

The tone changed.

Cold.

Threatening.

"If you don't tell the truth, Daddy will think you're lying again.""

My fists tightened.

Then Emma cried.

"I don't want Daddy to be mad.""

"He won't be mad if you tell the truth.""

"But it's not true.""

Silence.

Then Ashley whispered:

"Try again.""

The recording stopped.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel looked at me.

"Daniel.""

"That's enough.""

She nodded.

"This is important evidence.""

I looked at the audio file.

"No.""

"What?""

"This isn't just evidence.""

I pointed at the screen.

"This is my daughter.""

Rachel understood.

She closed the laptop.

"There is something else.""

"What?""

"Lena sent this because she found another file.""

"Another recording?""

"No.""

She turned the laptop back toward me.

A video appeared.

A timestamp.

A security camera angle.

My heart started pounding.

"Where is this from?""

Rachel looked at me.

"The hallway outside your old house.""

The video played.

The image was grainy.

But clear enough.

Ashley entered the house.

Then someone else appeared.

A person I recognized.

Someone carrying a folder.

Someone who had been helping Ashley from the beginning.

I leaned closer.

Because I needed to be wrong.

I needed my eyes to be wrong.

But they weren't.

The person handed Ashley the folder.

Ashley smiled.

Then said something the camera couldn't record.

But the next moment changed everything.

Because the person turned.

Looked directly at the camera.

And I recognized the face.

My father.

Rachel paused the video.

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly, the biggest question wasn't whether Ashley had planned this.

We already knew she had.

May you like

The question was why my father had helped her.

And what he was still hiding from me.
