Chapter 9: The Truth Written In Her Blood

For a moment, nobody reacted.

Not because we didn’t understand.

Because we understood too quickly.

The words hung in the air.

*Lily isn’t my daughter.*

I looked at Ryan.

Then at Lily.

Then at Ava.

My mind rejected it before my heart even had a chance.

“No.””

Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to say something like that after everything.””

The officer watched carefully.

My father moved beside me.

“Ryan, choose your next words carefully.””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what you’ve done.””

Ryan looked at Lily.

“I hurt everyone.””

Lily stood frozen.

She wasn’t crying.

That scared me.

Children cry when they still believe someone can fix things.

Lily looked at Ryan with a quiet sadness that made him look away.

“So…”

Her voice was small.

“What am I?””

The question broke something in the room.

Ryan immediately stepped forward.

“You are my daughter.””

Lily looked confused.

“But you just said—”

“You are my daughter because I raised you.””

His voice shook.

“Because I love you.””

I closed my eyes.

Even after everything.

Even after all the lies.

That sentence hurt.

Because it was probably true.

And that was the hardest part.

People could love you and still destroy you.

The two things could exist at the same time.

Ava looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For you having to find out this way.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t even know what I’m supposed to feel anymore.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You spent seventeen years knowing pieces of this.””

Her eyes dropped.

“You’re right.””

The officer stepped closer.

“We need to separate facts from assumptions.””

He looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter, explain exactly what you mean.””

Ryan sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“After Lily was born, my father ordered a private DNA test.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Because he didn’t trust anyone.””

“Not even his own son?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“Especially not me.””

The officer wrote something down.

“What did the test show?””

Ryan hesitated.

“That Lily wasn’t biologically related to me.””

The room went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“But she was born from me.””

Ryan looked at me.

“Yes.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

He closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

My father’s voice was cold.

“You expect us to believe you don’t know how your own child’s identity changed?””

Ryan looked at him.

“I didn’t understand it.””

“Try.””

Ryan took a breath.

“When my father saw the results, he believed there had been a mistake.””

“What kind?””

Ryan looked toward Lily.

“He believed the wrong baby had been assigned to the wrong family.””

My chest tightened.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“But you believed him.””

Ryan looked ashamed.

“I was young. I was scared. My father controlled everything.””

“You were thirty-two.””

“I know.””

I looked away.

I couldn’t keep hearing excuses.

The officer asked:

“Where are the original records?””

Ryan looked at the floor.

“My father took them.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

The officer studied him.

“You’re sure?””

Ryan nodded.

“I swear.””

Ava suddenly spoke.

“I know where they are.””

Everyone turned.

Ryan looked shocked.

“You do?””

She nodded.

“Because I found them.””

My heart raced.

“When?””

“Last year.””

“And you kept them?””

“I didn’t know who to trust.””

The answer hurt.

But I understood.

She reached into her bag.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Carefully protected.

“I was waiting for the right moment.””

The officer took it.

He opened it slowly.

Inside were documents.

Hospital records.

Original copies.

Everyone gathered closer.

I couldn’t breathe.

The officer scanned the pages.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

My father asked.

The officer looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

My heart pounded.

“What?””

He handed me the papers.

I looked down.

The first page was a birth record.

My name.

My date.

My child.

Then another line.

The name had been covered.

Rewritten.

Changed.

But underneath, faintly visible…

Was the original ink.

The officer pointed.

“Someone altered the record.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ava whispered:

“My grandfather.””

Daniel.

The man who had built an entire life around controlling the truth.

The officer turned the page.

“There’s more.””

I looked.

A second document.

A medical report.

The words blurred.

Then I saw something.

A blood type.

I looked at Lily.

Then Ava.

Then Ryan.

The officer spoke quietly.

“This explains why Daniel was obsessed.””

“What?””

He pointed to the report.

“There was a rare genetic marker.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel believed one child carried a biological connection to another branch of the family.””

My father looked confused.

“So he was searching for an heir?””

The officer shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“He was searching for proof.””

“Proof of what?””

The officer looked at the documents.

“That someone had manipulated the inheritance records years earlier.””

Silence.

Ryan looked shocked.

“What?””

The officer continued.

“Daniel’s family wealth wasn’t just passed through blood. There were legal conditions.””

I stared.

“So all of this…”

I looked around.

The lies.

The stolen years.

The fake papers.

“Was because of money?””

The officer shook his head.

“Money was part of it.””

“Then what was the rest?””

He looked at Ryan.

“Someone was hiding who Lily’s biological father was.””

The room froze.

Ryan went pale.

“I told you I don’t know.””

The officer looked at him.

“Then why did your father tell Emma to ask you?””

Ryan said nothing.

Because there was something.

Something he still wasn’t saying.

I turned toward him.

“Ryan.””

He looked at me.

“What else?””

His eyes filled.

“I thought it didn’t matter.””

The words made me cold.

“What didn’t matter?””

He looked at Lily.

Then whispered:

“When my father ordered the DNA test…”

A pause.

“The result wasn’t only that Lily wasn’t mine.””

I waited.

Ryan’s voice broke.

“It showed who her biological father was.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Ryan looked at the floor.

And then he said:

“Someone who was in that hospital room the night she was born.””

Nobody moved.

The officer stepped forward.

“Name.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“Dr. Michael Hayes.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Claire gasped.

Everyone turned.

“You know him?””

Claire looked terrified.

“I…”

She swallowed.

“I knew that name.””

My father frowned.

“From where?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because he was the doctor who delivered Lily.””

My blood turned cold.

The officer looked at Ryan.

“Are you saying the doctor who delivered your child may be her biological father?””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“I don’t know what happened.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The child I had loved every second of my life.

Nothing could change that.

Nothing.

But someone had stolen the truth from all of us.

The officer picked up his phone.

“I’ll need to locate Dr. Hayes.””

Then another officer rushed in from outside.

“Sir.””

Everyone turned.

“We found Daniel Carter’s location.””

My heart jumped.

The officer looked serious.

“But there’s a problem.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“He’s not alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who is with him?””

The officer hesitated.

Then answered:

“Dr. Michael Hayes.””

The room went silent.

Because the two men who knew the truth…

The two men who could explain everything…

Were together.

May you like

And according to the officer’s next words…

They were leaving the country tonight.
