Chapter 6: The Daughter I Was Told I Lost

I stared at the photo until my eyes burned.

The young woman on the screen looked back at me through a blurry image taken from a distance.

She had dark hair.

My dark hair.

She had the same small crease between her eyebrows that Lily had whenever she was concentrating.

And her eyes.

Those eyes were impossible.

Because I had spent twelve years looking into those eyes on Lily’s face.

I looked at Claire.

Then at Ryan.

Then back at the photo.

“No.””

The word came out like a whisper.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“She’s real.””

My knees almost gave out.

My father grabbed a chair and pulled it behind me.

I sat down slowly.

A thousand thoughts crashed into each other.

A thousand memories suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else.

The hospital.

The birth.

The days afterward.

The way Ryan had acted strange.

The way he never wanted to talk about those first few weeks.

The way his family always avoided the subject.

I had spent years believing I was imagining things.

Believing I was overthinking.

Believing I was just a tired new mother.

But I wasn’t.

Something had been taken from me.

And everyone knew.

The officer carefully lowered the phone.

“Mrs. Carter, do you recognize this person?””

I couldn’t look away.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But…”

I touched the screen.

“But I think I know who she is.””

The officer nodded.

“We need to verify her identity.””

Claire stepped closer.

“I can help.””

I looked at her.

The pain in my chest turned into anger again.

“You?””

She stopped.

“Yes.””

“You’ve helped enough.””

The words hurt her.

Good.

For once, I wanted someone else to feel the weight I had been carrying.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I am.””

“Sorry doesn’t give me back eleven years.””

“I know.””

“Sorry doesn’t give Lily back the sister she never knew.””

Claire looked toward Lily.

My daughter was sitting quietly beside my mother.

She had heard every word.

Every impossible detail.

And somehow, she was still holding herself together.

“Mom?””

I turned toward her.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

Her voice was tiny.

“Do I have a sister?””

My heart broke.

I walked to her immediately.

“Yes.””

The answer came before I could think.

“Yes, you do.””

Lily looked down.

“Why didn’t I know?””

I had no answer.

Because the truth was too painful.

Because the adults who were supposed to protect us had failed.

I pulled her into my arms.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“It’s not your fault.””

That sentence destroyed me.

Because a twelve-year-old child was comforting me.

The officer cleared his throat.

“We need more information from Ms. Claire.””

Claire nodded.

“I’ll tell you everything.””

Ryan suddenly spoke.

“Claire.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Claire looked at him.

“No, Ryan.””

She wiped her face.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

“You’ll destroy everything.””

She laughed quietly.

“Everything?””

She looked around the kitchen.

“At what point did we admit we were protecting something worth saving?””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You think she’ll forgive you?””

Claire looked at me.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I don’t.””

She looked down.

“But she deserves the truth.””

The officer gestured toward the table.

“Tell us what happened.””

Claire sat down.

And for the first time that night, Ryan looked powerless.

“Eleven years ago,” Claire began, “Emma went into labor early.””

I nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“Ryan’s father was at the hospital.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Claire hesitated.

“Because he had been involved with the pregnancy from the beginning.””

My face changed.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“Not medically.””

She took a breath.

“Financially.””

The officer leaned forward.

“Explain.””

“Ryan’s father controlled several family trusts. When he learned Ryan was having a child, he became obsessed with the inheritance.””

I stared at Ryan.

“You never told me about any of this.””

He didn’t answer.

Claire continued.

“He believed the child connected to the family name would determine who received control over certain assets.””

“That’s insane.””

“Yes.””

Claire nodded.

“But he had money, power, and people willing to do what he asked.””

My father’s voice was cold.

“And Ryan?””

Claire looked at him.

“Ryan was scared of losing everything.””

I looked at my husband.

“Is that true?””

Ryan finally spoke.

“I was young.””

The room became silent.

“You were thirty-two.””

He looked away.

“I thought I was protecting my future.””

I stared at him.

“You stole my child to protect your future?””

His face twisted.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

Ryan couldn’t answer.

Claire did.

“After the birth, Ryan’s father discovered there was a second baby.””

My hands went cold.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“There was a mistake in the records.””

“What kind of mistake?””

She swallowed.

“The hospital documents were altered.””

The officer immediately wrote something down.

“By who?””

Claire looked at Ryan.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan whispered:

“My father.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Even him.

Like he hadn’t meant to say it.

My father stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Ryan’s eyes closed.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me break.

“You knew all this time.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe Lily was my only child.””

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

“Afraid?””

My voice became sharp.

“You were afraid?””

I pointed toward Lily.

“She grew up without her sister.””

I pointed toward myself.

“I lived twelve years thinking my baby died.””

Ryan looked at me.

“She didn’t die.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“She was stolen.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because everyone knew.

The officer received another notification.

He looked down.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He showed his partner the screen.

“What is it?”” my father asked.

The officer hesitated.

“We traced the message.””

“And?””

He looked at me.

“It came from a registered phone number.””

My heart raced.

“Whose?””

The officer looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter’s.””

Everyone turned.

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

The officer continued.

“The message was sent from a device currently connected to your family account.””

Ryan looked confused.

“I don’t have that phone.””

The officer stared at him.

“Apparently someone does.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Because someone wasn’t just revealing secrets.

Someone was watching.

The officer showed the message again.

*She knows who you are.*

“What does that mean?”” my mother asked.

Claire’s face suddenly went pale.

“Oh no.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Claire stood quickly.

“She knows.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Claire looked at me.

“Your daughter.””

My heart stopped.

“The girl in the photo?””

Claire nodded.

“She knows about Lily.””

“How?””

Claire looked toward the phone.

“Because someone must have told her.””

The officer frowned.

“Who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She looked at Ryan.

And Ryan looked away.

That was when I understood.

This wasn’t just a secret from eleven years ago.

It was happening now.

Someone had been moving pieces around us.

Someone had been waiting.

The officer picked up the evidence bag.

“We need to locate this young woman immediately.””

I stood.

“I’m coming.””

My father looked at me.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I looked at the photo again.

For twelve years, I had been missing a piece of myself.

I wasn’t letting anyone take another minute.

“Find her.””

The officer nodded.

“We’ll try.””

Then Claire spoke softly.

“I know where she is.””

Everyone turned.

The officer stared at her.

“You do?””

Claire nodded.

“She contacted me three months ago.””

My heart sank.

“You talked to her?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Claire cried.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stepped back.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

The room went silent.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.

“Where is my daughter?””

Claire looked at me.

Her voice barely above a whisper.

“She’s been living twenty minutes away from you.””

I froze.

Twenty minutes.

A person I had searched for without knowing she existed.

A child I thought I lost.

Was close enough to pass on the street.

Claire continued.

“And there’s something else you need to know.””

“What?””

Claire looked terrified.

“She didn’t just contact me.””

A pause.

“She contacted Ryan first.””

Ryan’s face turned white.

The officer looked at him.

“Mr. Carter?””

Ryan said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

Because my missing daughter hadn’t found us by accident.

May you like

She had been looking for him.

And she knew exactly why.
