Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden In The Phone

The name written on the back of that phone made my entire body go cold.

I stared at the small piece of tape.

I stared at the handwriting.

And for a moment, I couldn’t hear anything else.

Not the officers moving around the kitchen.

Not Diane whispering angrily to Ryan.

Not Lily asking my mother what was happening.

Nothing.

Because the name on that phone belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had sat at my table.

Someone who had hugged my daughter.

Someone who had looked me in the eyes and told me everything would be okay.

My sister.

Claire.

“No,” I whispered.

My father looked at me.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

The officer holding the phone noticed my reaction.

“You know this name?””

My fingers tightened around the edge of the kitchen chair.

“Claire…”

The officer glanced down.

“That’s what’s written here.””

My stomach twisted.

My younger sister.

The person I defended my entire life.

The person who cried with me when my first marriage proposal fell apart.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

Claire.

The officer carefully placed the phone on the table.

“Do you know why this device was hidden?””

I looked toward Ryan.

His face had changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

And that told me more than any confession could.

“You know,” I said quietly.

Ryan looked away.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You know exactly why her name is on that phone.””

Diane immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t start accusing people without proof.””

My father turned toward her.

“Funny.””

His voice was calm.

“You didn’t care about proof when you were creating fake documents about my daughter.””

Diane opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The officer picked up the phone again.

“We’ll need to examine this device.””

Ryan suddenly moved.

“No.””

Everyone noticed.

The officer looked at him.

“No?””

Ryan swallowed.

“I mean… there’s no reason to make this bigger than it already is.””

The officer raised an eyebrow.

“Mr. Carter, a hidden phone was found with your name connected to forged legal documents.””

Ryan became quiet.

The officer continued.

“That usually means we have a reason.””

My hands were shaking.

But not from fear anymore.

From confusion.

From betrayal.

From the impossible question running through my mind.

Why Claire?

Why would my sister be involved?

My father came beside me.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t understand.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“She’s my sister.””

“I know.””

“She helped me after Mom died.””

“I know.””

“She was there when Lily was born.””

My father didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

That was why it hurt.

The people who betray you are rarely strangers.

They are usually the ones who know exactly where to cut.

The officer placed the phone into an evidence bag.

“We’ll need everyone to stay available while we sort through this.””

Ryan laughed nervously.

“This is getting ridiculous.””

The officer looked at him.

“Is it?””

Ryan didn’t respond.

The police continued searching.

They found bank statements.

Copies of medical forms.

Emails printed on paper.

And something else.

A notebook.

Small.

Black.

Hidden beneath the boxes.

The officer opened it.

At first, I thought it was just another collection of lies.

Then I saw the first page.

My name.

Written at the top.

Below it were dates.

Observations.

Notes.

“Argument with husband.””

“Emotional reaction.””

“Possible instability.””

I felt sick.

They had been documenting me.

Like I was a problem to be solved.

Like I wasn’t a person.

“What is this?”” my mother whispered.

The officer looked serious.

“Looks like someone was building a case.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“A case against my daughter.””

The officer nodded.

“Possibly.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

I turned toward him.

“Stop saying that.””

He looked at me.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to use that word anymore.””

His face fell slightly.

“Use what word?””

“Misunderstanding.””

I pointed at the hidden boxes.

“The fake papers.””

I pointed at the notebook.

“The notes.””

I looked at the phone.

“The secret recordings.””

My voice became quieter.

“This wasn’t a misunderstanding.””

Ryan looked down.

“It was supposed to help.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“Help who?””

He didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

The officer looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter, did you create these records?””

Ryan hesitated.

“No.””

“Did you know about them?””

Another pause.

“No.””

The officer watched him carefully.

“You’re hesitating.””

“I’m thinking.””

“About whether to tell the truth?””

Ryan looked angry.

But he didn’t deny it.

Then Diane spoke.

“He did what he had to do.””

Everyone turned.

Ryan looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

But Diane continued.

“You don’t understand what we were dealing with.””

My heart stopped.

“What we were dealing with?””

Diane looked at me.

“Yes.””

There was something terrifying about how calm she sounded.

“You.””

Lily moved closer to me.

My arm immediately wrapped around her.

Diane noticed.

And smiled slightly.

That smile made my skin crawl.

“You see? Even now, she’s making Lily afraid.””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No,” Diane said.

“She needs to hear the truth.””

I stared at her.

“What truth?””

Diane looked almost pleased.

“The truth is Ryan was trying to protect his daughter.””

“From her mother?””

“Yes.””

The word hit me.

Lily gasped.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood there, trembling.

“My mom never hurt me.””

Diane’s expression changed.

“Lily—”

“No.””

My daughter’s voice shook.

“But it’s true.””

She looked at Ryan.

“You told Grandma I was scared of Mom.””

Ryan looked away.

“When did I say that?””

“Last month.””

Silence.

“You said if I stayed with Mom, I would become like her.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

I looked at Ryan.

He looked trapped.

“Lily, that’s not what I meant.””

She wiped her tears.

“Yes, it was.””

My father closed his eyes for a second.

Trying to control his anger.

The officer wrote something down.

Then another officer entered from the hallway.

“Found something else.””

Everyone turned.

The officer held a folder.

“This was hidden inside the wall behind the basement shelf.””

Diane’s face changed.

“What?””

The officer opened it.

Inside were copies of financial records.

My financial records.

The officer looked at me.

“Are you aware of any missing money from your accounts?””

My heart started pounding.

“No.””

He looked at the papers again.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He handed one page to me.

I looked down.

My name was on a transfer.

A large transfer.

From our joint account.

The date was six months earlier.

The same week Ryan told me his company needed extra money for a project.

The same week he told me not to worry.

I looked at him.

“You took money.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“No.””

The officer pointed at the document.

“Your signature appears here.””

I stared at it.

Another fake signature.

Another lie.

Another piece of a puzzle I never knew existed.

“You were stealing from me.””

Ryan shook his head.

“I was moving money.””

“Without telling me?””

“It was temporary.””

“For what?””

He said nothing.

My father answered for him.

“To fund this.””

The room went silent.

Ryan looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

My father looked at the hidden documents.

“I know enough.””

I felt numb.

The man I married wasn’t suddenly becoming a stranger.

He had been a stranger for a long time.

I was just finally meeting him.

Then the officer’s phone rang.

He stepped away to answer.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

He returned slowly.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I looked up.

“Yes?””

“We accessed enough information from the first phone to identify recent communication.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“With who?””

The officer looked down at his notes.

“Your sister.””

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already knew.

It still hurt.

“Claire.””

He nodded.

“But that’s not all.””

I opened my eyes.

“What do you mean?””

The officer looked at Ryan.

Then at me.

“The messages suggest this plan wasn’t started by your husband.””

The room went completely quiet.

My father frowned.

“Then who started it?””

The officer hesitated.

Then he said:

“The earliest messages came from someone else.””

My fingers went cold.

“Who?””

The officer looked at the phone screen.

And read the name aloud.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Ryan look terrified.

A name that made Diane stop breathing.

“Your father-in-law.””

I froze.

“My father-in-law has been dead for five years.””

Nobody spoke.

The officer slowly turned the phone toward me.

“There are messages on this device from an account using his name.””

I stared at the screen.

The impossible was sitting in front of me.

Because underneath the messages was a date.

A date from after he died.

And then I saw the final message.

The one that explained why they had been planning this for so long.

My hands started shaking.

Because it wasn’t about Lily.

It wasn’t about my marriage.

It wasn’t even about money.

It was about something I had never known existed.

A secret my husband’s family had protected for years.

May you like

And according to that message…

I was the only person standing between them and everything they wanted.
