Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
The message stayed on the screen.
One sentence.
One name.
One impossible truth.
*“Tell Emma the truth before Ryan does.””*
I stared at the phone in Ava’s hand.
Then I looked at Claire.
Then Ryan.
Nobody looked surprised.
That was the part that hurt the most.
They all knew how to react.
Because they had all been living with this secret.
I was the only person who had been allowed to believe a lie.
“My father-in-law is alive?””
My voice sounded distant.
The officer looked at Ava.
“Are you certain this account belongs to Daniel Carter?””
Ava nodded.
“I’ve received messages from him before.””
“How many?””
She hesitated.
“Dozens.””
My stomach dropped.
“Dozens?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know if they were real.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I didn’t know if you were safe.””
The words hurt.
But I understood them.
Because apparently, nobody had been safe.
Not me.
Not Ava.
Not Lily.
The officer took the phone.
“We need to verify the source.””
My father looked at Ryan.
“Your father faked his death?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
My father stepped closer.
“Answer the question.””
Ryan looked exhausted.
Like he had finally run out of places to hide.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it changed everything.
Lily looked at him.
“You knew?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My daughter’s face changed.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
That was worse.
“You lied to me too.””
Ryan looked at her.
“Lily…”
“No.””
She stood.
Her voice shook.
“You always told me lying was wrong.””
Ryan looked like he wanted to say something.
But there was nothing.
Because children remember the rules adults break.
The officer turned toward Ryan.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to explain.””
Ryan sat down slowly.
“My father wasn’t supposed to disappear.””
My father crossed his arms.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan looked at the floor.
“It means he planned everything.””
The words made the room quiet.
Ryan continued.
“After Lily was born, my father became obsessed with controlling the family assets.””
I looked at him.
“And the babies?””
He nodded.
“He believed the inheritance belonged to the child who carried certain family traits.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“But he believed it.””
The officer frowned.
“Are you saying your father separated your children because of inheritance?””
Ryan nodded.
“Yes.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And you helped him.””
Ryan looked at me.
“I was afraid.””
I stared at him.
“You keep saying that.””
A tear moved down his face.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“You were afraid of losing money.””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Ava looked at him.
“You knew where I was.””
Ryan looked at her.
“I knew you were alive.””
The pain in her face was immediate.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“For seventeen years?””
Ryan looked away.
Ava stood.
“You let me believe my mother abandoned me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
She laughed.
A broken laugh.
“You sound exactly like everyone else.””
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Everyone who hurt us had used the same excuse.
Protection.
Family.
The greater good.
Words that sounded beautiful when they hid ugly choices.
The officer received a call.
He stepped away.
A few moments later, he returned.
“We have confirmation.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The account belongs to Daniel Carter.””
My heart stopped.
“How?””
The officer looked serious.
“Because the messages were sent from a phone registered under his identity.””
My father frowned.
“But he’s dead.””
The officer nodded.
“Officially.””
That word made my skin crawl.
Officially.
A person could be dead on paper.
But alive in reality.
Just like my daughter had been erased.
The officer continued.
“We’re also checking hospital and financial records.””
Ryan suddenly looked alarmed.
“Why?””
The officer looked at him.
“Because if your father is alive, we need to know why.””
Ryan stood.
“You don’t understand.””
The officer watched him.
“Then explain.””
Ryan looked around.
At me.
At Ava.
At Lily.
Then he whispered:
“My father didn’t just fake his death.””
Nobody moved.
“He changed his identity.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“To do what?””
Ryan swallowed.
“To continue controlling everything.””
The officer nodded.
“Where is he now?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was the problem.
He knew.
And everyone saw it.
“You know where he is,” I said.
Ryan looked at me.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You know where he is.””
He looked away.
The officer moved closer.
“Mr. Carter.””
Ryan finally spoke.
“He has a property.””
“Where?””
Ryan hesitated.
“Outside the city.””
“Address.””
Ryan gave it.
The officer immediately called another unit.
But before he could finish, my phone rang.
I froze.
Nobody called me.
Not that night.
Not after everything.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
The room became silent.
The officer gestured.
“Put it on speaker.””
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man spoke.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Emma.””
My blood ran cold.
I had never heard his voice before.
But I knew exactly who it was.
Daniel Carter.
Ryan’s father.
“You took a long time to find the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
My father moved closer.
I put the phone on speaker.
“How are you alive?””
A quiet laugh.
“Careful. That question has more answers than you think.””
My hands trembled.
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
His voice remained calm.
“I protected my family.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“You stole my child.””
“I protected the Carter legacy.””
“You’re talking about money.””
“I’m talking about blood.””
Everyone went silent.
The man continued.
“You never understood the importance of what happened that night.””
I looked at Ava.
Then Lily.
“What did you do?””
A pause.
Then:
“I corrected a mistake.””
My stomach turned.
“What mistake?””
Daniel sighed.
“Your daughter was never supposed to be raised by you.””
Lily grabbed my hand.
I held on.
The officer silently motioned for someone to trace the call.
Daniel continued.
“Ryan was weak. Diane was emotional. Claire was confused.””
My eyes moved to Claire.
She looked devastated.
“But I was the only one willing to make the necessary decision.””
“You separated my daughters.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was horrifying.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“Because one of them belonged to the Carter family.””
My voice shook.
“They both did.””
“No.””
The word was cold.
“Only one carried what we needed.””
The room became frozen.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Ask Ryan why the hospital records were changed.””
Everyone looked at Ryan.
His face went pale.
“Ask him why Lily’s records were never complete.””
My heart stopped.
“Ryan?””
He closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“He knows.””
The call suddenly became distorted.
The officer whispered:
“We’re close.””
I stepped toward the phone.
“What did you do?””
Daniel’s voice softened.
Almost like he felt sorry for me.
“That’s the tragedy, Emma.””
“What?””
“You spent twelve years loving the wrong story.””
The call cut off.
The room stayed silent.
Then the officer looked at Ryan.
“Your turn.””
Ryan didn’t respond.
My father stepped closer.
“What did he mean?””
Ryan looked at Lily.
Then Ava.
Then me.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
He looked genuinely terrified.
“I never told you because I didn’t know how.””
My voice became quiet.
“Know how to tell me what?””
Ryan looked at Lily.
Then whispered:
“Lily isn’t the daughter Daniel was trying to find.””
Nobody understood.
“What?””
Ryan looked at me.
“The reason my father separated the babies…”
He swallowed.
“…was because he believed Ava was hiding something.””
Ava frowned.
“What?””
Ryan shook his head.
“He wasn’t looking for the heir.””
My heart raced.
“Then what was he looking for?””
Ryan’s eyes filled with fear.
“The truth about who Lily’s biological father really is.””
The room went completely silent.
I stared at him.
“What did you just say?””
Ryan looked at me.
And the next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Emma…”
May you like
He whispered:
“Lily isn’t my daughter.””
