Chapter 5: My Sister’s Confession
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not the officers.
Not my parents.
Not Ryan.
Not even Claire.
The only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the refrigerator behind us.
A normal sound.
A comforting sound.
A sound that belonged in a normal home.
But my home had stopped being normal a long time ago.
I stared at my sister standing in the doorway.
The person who had held my hand through heartbreak.
The person who knew every secret I had ever carried.
The person who knew exactly how much Lily meant to me.
“You.””
My voice barely came out.
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I shook my head slowly.
“No.””
She took a step forward.
“Emma—”
“Don’t.””
My father immediately moved closer to me.
Not because he thought Claire would hurt me.
Because he knew I was trying to keep myself standing.
“You don’t get to say my name like that,” I whispered.
Claire looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My chest felt tight.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your own sister was helping destroy your life.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I know I hurt you.””
“Hurt me?””
I looked at the table.
The documents.
The phone.
The evidence of months of betrayal.
“You helped them take my daughter.””
A tear rolled down Claire’s cheek.
“I never wanted that.””
Ryan suddenly spoke.
“Claire.””
Everyone looked at him.
His voice was sharp.
Almost angry.
“Don’t do this.””
Claire turned toward him.
And for the first time that night, I saw someone look at Ryan without fear.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
The room went silent.
Ryan’s face changed.
Because he realized something.
Claire wasn’t there to protect him.
She was there because something had finally broken.
The officer stepped forward.
“Ms. Claire Carter?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you admitting involvement with the documents and records we found?””
Claire looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then back at the officer.
“Yes.””
My mother covered her mouth.
My father looked away.
Even though we had already heard the confession, hearing it spoken aloud made it real.
“Why?”” I asked.
Claire looked at me.
And the sadness in her eyes almost made me angrier.
Because I didn’t need her sadness.
I needed the truth.
“Because I thought I was saving you.””
I stared at her.
“Saving me?””
She nodded.
“You don’t understand.””
“You’re right.””
My voice shook.
“I don’t.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Before Lily was born, something happened.””
Ryan looked at her.
“Stop.””
Claire ignored him.
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I should have told her years ago.””
The officer watched carefully.
“Start from the beginning.””
Claire looked at the photo on the table.
The old photo of me holding newborn Lily.
Then she looked at me.
“Eleven years ago, when you went into labor, Ryan’s father was still alive.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“But you don’t know what happened after.””
My fingers tightened.
“What happened?””
Claire hesitated.
Then said:
“Lily wasn’t the only baby born that night.””
The room went completely still.
I blinked.
“What?””
My mother whispered:
“Claire…”
Claire looked at me.
“There were two babies.””
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No, don’t do this.””
My father grabbed my arm gently.
“Emma.””
I looked at Claire.
“You’re saying Lily had a twin?””
Claire nodded.
The word felt impossible.
Twin.
A child.
Another baby.
A piece of my life I never knew existed.
“What happened?””
Claire looked at Ryan.
And Ryan looked away.
That told me everything.
Claire continued.
“Your pregnancy was complicated. You were exhausted. You were scared. You trusted Ryan completely.””
I swallowed.
“I remember.””
“I remember too.””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“You were so happy when Lily was born.””
A painful memory appeared.
The hospital room.
Ryan crying.
Me holding my tiny baby.
Thinking I had everything I ever wanted.
“I remember Ryan telling me he had to make a phone call.””
My voice became quiet.
“He left the room.””
Claire nodded.
“That was when everything changed.””
I stared at her.
“What did he do?””
Ryan stepped forward.
“Claire, enough.””
My father turned toward him.
“Sit down.””
Something about my father’s voice made Ryan stop.
Claire continued.
“Ryan’s father had discovered something about the baby.””
“What?””
She looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“He believed Lily was connected to a family inheritance.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Nobody moved.
Claire explained slowly.
“Ryan’s family had money. More than you knew.””
I looked at Ryan.
He didn’t deny it.
“His father had hidden assets. Properties. Accounts.””
The officer nodded.
“Where are those records?””
Claire looked at the hidden boxes.
“That’s what they’ve been trying to find.””
My stomach tightened.
“So this wasn’t about Lily.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not originally.””
“Then what was it about?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“Your pregnancy.””
I felt confused.
“My pregnancy?””
She nodded.
“Before Lily was born, doctors discovered something.””
The room became colder.
“What?””
Claire looked at Ryan.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Claire answered.
“They discovered that the baby had a rare blood condition.””
I looked at Lily.
“She’s healthy.””
“Now.””
The word made my heart race.
“What are you saying?””
Claire looked devastated.
“I’m saying Ryan’s father believed Lily’s birth records could prove something about the family inheritance.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Claire wiped her face.
“He believed the child connected to that inheritance had to be identified.””
My father frowned.
“What does that have to do with Emma?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because after Lily was born, Ryan’s father found out something.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“He found out you had a second child.””
My knees weakened.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
“No.””
I looked at Lily.
Then at Claire.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire’s tears fell faster.
“I know.””
“Where is she?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Where is my child?
My daughter.
Another baby.
Another life.
Claire looked down.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Claire.””
She didn’t answer.
“Where is my child?””
Ryan’s face went pale.
“Emma…”
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
He looked devastated.
“You need to understand.””
“No.””
My voice exploded.
“You knew I had another child?””
Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew enough.””
He didn’t respond.
That was enough.
My father stepped toward him.
“What did you do with that child?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I didn’t do anything.””
Claire spoke quietly.
“Ryan’s father made the decision.””
The officer looked at her.
“Decision about what?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“About which child would inherit the family assets.””
The room froze.
I couldn’t understand the words.
They sounded like they belonged in a movie.
Not my life.
Not my daughter.
Not my family.
“You’re telling me someone separated my children because of money?””
Claire nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Sorry?””
My voice broke.
“You knew.””
She cried silently.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Since the day it happened.””
The pain was physical.
Like someone had reached inside my chest.
“You knew for eleven years.””
Claire nodded.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Ryan.
Then Diane.
Then at the floor.
“Of what they would do if I told you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“They already destroyed my life.””
Claire whispered:
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t.””
The officer interrupted.
“We need to understand the legal situation.””
Claire nodded.
“There are documents.””
“Where?””
She looked toward the hidden boxes.
“Some are here.””
“Some?””
Claire hesitated.
“The most important ones aren’t.””
My father frowned.
“Where are they?””
Claire looked at me.
And I knew before she spoke.
Because everyone had been afraid of the same thing.
“There is one person who knows where they are.””
The room went quiet.
“Who?””
Claire swallowed.
“Your missing daughter.””
I felt my entire body go cold.
“My daughter?””
Claire nodded.
“The child you were told never existed…”
She looked toward the door.
“…is alive.””
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
Then Ryan’s phone, sitting inside an evidence bag, suddenly lit up.
A new message appeared.
The officer picked it up.
His expression changed.
“What?””
The officer stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
My heart pounded.
“What?””
He turned the phone around.
The message was from an unknown number.
Only four words.
*“She knows who you are.””*
And underneath it was a photo.
A young woman.
A face I had never seen before.
But somehow…
May you like
I knew.
Because she had my eyes.
