Chapter 5

My sister Nora opened the door before I knocked.

She took one look at my face and said, “Who hit you?”

“Evelyn.”

Her expression went calm.

Dangerously calm.

“Come in.”

I entered.

Her husband, Caleb, stood from the couch.

“What happened?”

I handed Nora the clinic envelope.

Then I sat at her kitchen table and told them everything.

The baby clothes.

The rattle.

The slap.

Daniel knowing.

The doctor’s report.

Robert’s confession.

Dr. Mason.

Thirty-four years of hidden infertility.

By the time I finished, Nora had already called Alicia Grant.

A divorce attorney.

I stared at her.

“Nora.”

She held up one hand.

“Information is not a decision. But you need information.”

Alicia arrived an hour later.

She had silver glasses, a leather folder, and the kind of calm that made panic embarrassed of itself.

She listened.

Asked questions.

Took photos of my cheek.

Copied the fertility report.

Asked about finances.

Medical privacy.

Family pressure.

Emotional abuse.

Whether Daniel had ever physically hurt me.

“No,” I said.

Then paused.

“He grabbed the envelope tonight.”

“That matters.”

I looked down.

“He didn’t hit me.”

“Sarah,” Alicia said gently, “harm is not only what leaves bruises.”

I cried then.

May you like

Quietly.

Because that sentence opened a door I had locked for years.
