Chapter 2

Nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

Not Laura.

Not the uncles and cousins who had been so ready to watch me bleed under family judgment.

Robert stood at the head of the table, pale and shaking.

The baby clothes sat between us like props from a cruel play.

Tiny socks.

Blue blanket.

Silver rattle on the floor.

Robert’s voice came out low.

“Evelyn.”

She shook her head immediately.

“No.”

He did not move.

“Is Daniel my son?”

The silence became unbearable.

Daniel whispered, “Dad.”

Robert looked at him.

“Do not answer for her.”

Evelyn gripped the back of a chair.

“This is not about me.”

I laughed once.

I could not help it.

Every head turned toward me.

I touched my burning cheek.

“You made it about me the second you called me barren in front of everyone.”

Evelyn’s eyes flashed.

“Stay out of this.”

“No.”

The word surprised even me.

But once it left my mouth, I felt something inside me straighten.

“No, Evelyn. You dragged my body into this room. You made my womb family business. Now your secrets can sit at the same table.”

Laura covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Robert reached down and picked up the silver rattle.

His hand shook around it.

“I want an answer.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

“Robert, this was decades ago.”

Laura whispered, “Mom.”

Evelyn snapped, “Be quiet.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“Decades ago?”

That was not a denial.

It was the first crack.

Daniel looked like a child suddenly standing in the wrong house.

“Mom, what is he saying?”

Evelyn turned on me instead.

“This is your fault.”

I stared at her.

“My fault?”

“If you had given this family a child, none of this would be happening.”

That sentence did something to Robert.

He slammed the rattle onto the table.

Enough.

The sound made everyone jump.

“You slapped Sarah,” he said. “You humiliated her. You blamed her for something your own son already knew.”

He looked at Daniel.

“You knew?”

Daniel’s throat moved.

I answered before he could hide.

“Yes. He knew.”

Robert’s face collapsed.

I continued.

“He knew for three weeks. He asked me not to tell anyone.”

Laura turned to her brother.

“Daniel.”

He sat down slowly.

“I needed time.”

May you like

I looked at him.

“No. You needed a scapegoat.”
