Chapter 3

I did not cry until I reached the bathroom.

Not because Evelyn had slapped me.

Not because Daniel had failed me.

Because when I looked in the mirror, I saw the red mark on my cheek and finally understood how long I had been trained to stay quiet.

Three years of marriage.

Three years of monthly questions.

Any news?

Have you tried harder?

Maybe Sarah is too stressed.

Maybe Sarah is too thin.

Maybe Sarah does not want children badly enough.

Three years of Daniel squeezing my knee under tables, whispering, “Ignore her.”

Ignore her.

While she sharpened me into the family failure.

I splashed cold water on my face.

My hands shook.

From the hallway, I heard voices rising.

Robert.

Evelyn.

Daniel.

Laura crying.

Then a soft knock came.

“Sarah?”

It was Laura.

I opened the door.

She looked at my cheek and burst into tears.

“I’m sorry.”

I almost said it was okay.

That old reflex.

Comfort other people when they witness your pain.

Instead, I said, “Thank you.”

She nodded, crying harder.

“I didn’t know. About Daniel. About Dad. Any of it.”

“I didn’t either until the clinic.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“And Daniel let Mom keep blaming you?”

“Yes.”

Laura covered her mouth.

“I hate this.”

“So do I.”

From the dining room, Evelyn shouted, “That report proves nothing!”

Robert’s voice answered, sharper than I had ever heard it.

“It proves enough to ask questions you have avoided for thirty-four years.”

Laura whispered, “What are you going to do?”

I looked at my purse.

At the envelope.

At the woman in the mirror who had entered that house as a wife and stood there now like a witness.

“I’m going home,” I said.

May you like

“To Daniel?”

“No.”
