Chapter 4

Six weeks earlier, Maya’s anonymous email had reached the board.
The subject line was simple.
Please look at Chicago.
Inside were dates.
Names.
Expense records.
Resignation patterns.
Complaint numbers that no longer existed.
Screenshots of Victor’s messages.
Settlement rumors.
Performance reviews that changed after women refused private meetings.
Maya had built the file because no one else would.
Headquarters wanted a quiet audit.
I said it would fail.
Victor knew how to behave when watched.
He knew how to bury paper.
He knew how to make victims look difficult.
So I asked to go in as a junior hire.
A target.
They said it was risky.
I said the real risk was leaving him there.
By the end of my first day, Victor had done exactly what Maya’s email described.
The insults.
The coffee.
The impossible tasks.
The hidden file.
The late office meeting.
The closed door.
The touch.
The threat.
He did not need a trap.
He needed opportunity.
That was the worst part.
Predators do not always lose control.

Sometimes they follow procedure.
Their own.
