Chapter 1

My manager spent the whole day humiliating me because I was the new girl.

After closing time, he called me into his glass office and touched my waist.

So I slapped him hard enough to make the whole branch hear it.

By 8:15 a.m., Victor Hayes had already decided I was his target.

It was my first day at the Chicago branch.

At least, that was what he believed.

He dropped a stack of files onto my desk and smiled.

“Let’s see if the new girl can read.”

Everyone heard it.

No one laughed.

That scared me more.

People laugh when they think a joke is harmless.

Silence means they have seen the same cruelty before.

By 10 a.m., Victor made me redo a report three times.

Not because it was wrong.

Because he kept changing the instructions.

At noon, he sent me to buy coffee for twelve people with my own money.

When I asked for the company card, he leaned close.

“Don’t be difficult on day one.”

A woman from accounting, Maya, looked at me from across the room.

Her face said, Don’t argue.

By 2 p.m., Victor blamed me for a missing client file I had never touched.

He slammed his hand on my desk.

“Careless girls don’t last here.”

I kept my voice steady.

“Check the email log.”

His jaw tightened.

By 4 p.m., I found the missing file in his drawer while he watched me.

He smiled like it was funny.

“Good. You’re learning.”

No.

He was learning.

At 5:45, the office started emptying.

Maya stopped near my desk and whispered, “Leave with me.”

Before I could answer, Victor appeared behind her.

“She’s staying.”

Maya went pale.

Victor pointed toward his glass office.

“Inside. Now.”

I stood slowly.

“What is this about?”

“Your future here.”

I walked in but left the door open.

He closed it behind me.

The click sounded too loud.

Victor leaned against the desk.

“You embarrassed me today.”

“You embarrassed yourself.”

His smile vanished.

Then he stepped closer.

“New girls should know how to treat their manager.”

I moved toward the door.

He grabbed my arm.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Let go.”

Instead, his hand slid to my waist.

I slapped him.

Hard.

His head snapped to the side.

The sound echoed through the glass office.

Outside, Maya froze with her phone in her hand.

Victor touched his cheek, stunned.

“You just ruined your life.”

I reached for the door.

He shoved it shut with his palm.

“You think anyone will believe you?”

Then the elevator dinged.

Victor turned.

Two men in dark suits stepped out with the regional HR director.

Maya lifted her phone and whispered, “I recorded everything.”

Victor’s face drained of color.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the badge I had kept hidden all day.

Not a junior employee badge.

A headquarters investigation badge.

The regional HR director looked at Victor and said, “Mr. Hayes, headquarters sent her here for a reason.”

Then one of the men opened a sealed folder labeled:

Victor Hayes — Prior Complaints and Settlements.

Victor looked at the folder.

Then at me.

For the first time all day, he understood.

I was not the new girl.

I was the reason his office door would never close again.
