Chapter 20

On the fifth anniversary of Victor’s termination, I returned to Chicago for Maya’s promotion to regional vice president.

The office was loud with real laughter.

Not nervous laughter.

Not silence pretending to be peace.

Real laughter.

The shared project room was full of plants and people.

Rachel was a team lead.

Jordan ran training.

Priya consulted on survivor-centered workplace policy.

Denise came out of retirement for cake.

Alicia came because she suspected someone might say something legally imprecise.

Maya stood at the front of the branch.

“This office once taught people to survive quietly,” she said. “Now it teaches people to speak early, document clearly, and keep doors open.”

Everyone applauded.

I looked toward the glass room.

For a moment, I remembered Victor’s hand on my arm.

His hand at my waist.

The slap.

The shock on his face.

Maya’s phone rising outside the glass.

The elevator ding.

The sealed folder.

The day a man who thought no one would believe us discovered that everyone had been waiting for someone to start.

After the ceremony, Maya handed me a coffee.

“With the company card,” she said.

I laughed.

“Good.”

She lifted her cup.

“To the new girls.”

I shook my head.

“To the women who were never new to their own worth.”

Maya smiled.

“That’s better.”

So we drank to that.

Victor had tried to make my first day a warning.

Instead, it became the day his last secret opened.

And every woman he thought he had silenced finally had a room where the door stayed open.
