Chapter 2

Victor’s hand dropped from the door.

His cheek was still red from my slap.

My wrist was red from his grip.

The regional HR director, Denise Carter, stepped into the glass office first.

Her voice was calm.

That made her more frightening.

“Mr. Hayes, step away from Ms. Lane.”

Victor blinked.

“Ms. Lane?”

I lifted the badge higher.

“Claire Lane. Senior Director of Internal Investigations.”

His mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Denise turned to the two men in suits.

“Secure the office.”

One man moved toward Victor’s laptop.

The other stood by the door.

Victor suddenly found his voice.

“This is a setup.”

I looked at him.

“No. This is your routine.”

His eyes flashed.

“You assaulted me.”

Maya spoke from outside the glass.

“She slapped you after you grabbed her.”

Her voice shook.

But she said it.

Denise looked at Maya’s phone.

“You recorded?”

Maya nodded.

“From the moment he told her she was staying.”

Victor pointed at her.

“You’re finished here.”

Denise’s pen stopped moving.

“Retaliation threat witnessed by headquarters. Helpful.”

A few employees still stood outside.

They had not left.

Accounting.

Reception.

Two analysts.

One young woman near the printer with tears in her eyes.

Victor saw them watching and tried to put his mask back on.

“Everyone go home.”

No one moved.

Denise opened the sealed folder.

“Mr. Hayes, you are being placed on immediate administrative suspension pending investigation into harassment, retaliation, misconduct, and suppression of prior complaints.”

He laughed.

“I run this branch.”

“Not anymore.”

His face changed.

The power left him in pieces.

First the door.

Then the laptop.

Then the office.

Then the people.

The security officer took his company phone.

Victor reached for it.

“Careful,” the guard said.

Victor froze.

I stepped out of the office.

Maya was still holding her phone.

Her knuckles were white.

I said quietly, “Thank you.”

Her eyes filled.

“I should have done it sooner.”

“No,” I said. “You did it when you could.”

The young woman by the printer suddenly whispered, “He did it to me too.”

Everyone turned.

Her name tag read Rachel.

She looked no older than twenty-four.

Victor’s face went hard.

“Rachel, don’t.”

That one sentence confirmed everything.

Denise turned slowly.

“Ms. Hayes?”

Rachel flinched.

“Harper. Rachel Harper.”

Denise’s face softened.

“Rachel, you do not have to speak here. But if you want to be heard, you will be.”

Rachel looked at Victor.

Then at Maya.

Then at me.

“He said no one would believe me.”

The branch went silent.

Maya lowered her phone.

“I believe you.”

That broke Rachel.

She started sobbing.

And that was when Victor Hayes stopped being a powerful manager.

He became what he had always been.

A man standing in a glass room with nowhere left to hide.
