Chapter 8: The Boardroom Where He Tried to Erase Me
Whitmore Global's headquarters occupied forty-two floors of a glass tower in Manhattan.
I had attended dozens of events there.
I knew the lobby, the executive elevators, the receptionists, and the security guards.
But when I entered that morning, something felt different.
People stopped talking.
Several employees looked away.
Others whispered behind their hands.
On the enormous screen above reception was Adrian's photograph.
Beneath it were the words:
*ADRIAN WHITMORE — APPOINTED ACTING CHAIRMAN.*
I stared at it.
My husband had managed to turn his attempted betrayal into a corporate victory before breakfast.
A receptionist approached us.
"Good morning, Mr. Whitmore.""
She looked at my father.
Then at me.
"Miss Whitmore.""
"Where is the board meeting?"" Dad asked.
"Executive conference room, forty-first floor.""
"Thank you.""
As we entered the elevator, I noticed a familiar face near the security desk.
Thomas Reed.
He was speaking to two men in dark suits.
When he saw us, he immediately walked away.
Daniel followed him with his eyes.
"He's still trying to control the situation.""
My father pressed the elevator button.
"Let him try.""
The doors closed.
The conference room was already full.
Nine board members sat around the long black table.
At the far end stood Adrian.
He wore a dark navy suit and a burgundy tie.
His hair was perfectly styled.
He looked like a man who had just won an important battle.
Vanessa sat beside him.
She was wearing a cream-colored dress and holding a leather folder.
Thomas stood near the windows.
When Adrian saw me, his smile disappeared.
Then he recovered.
"Claire.""
I walked into the room without answering.
He looked at my father.
"Richard. I was hoping we could settle this privately.""
Dad pulled out a chair.
"Then you should have stopped holding secret board meetings.""
Adrian turned toward the directors.
"Before we begin, I'd like to clarify that Richard Whitmore has been acting against the interests of this company.""
One director, Mr. Patterson, cleared his throat.
"Adrian, we were told there was a valid trust amendment.""
"There is.""
He lifted a document.
"The original trust agreement was superseded three days before Eleanor Whitmore's death. This amendment transferred the controlling voting rights to the executive management structure.""
Daniel placed a copy of the original trust on the table.
"That document is disputed and appears to contain an unauthorized alteration.""
Adrian laughed.
"Convenient.""
My father remained calm.
"Show the board the notarization.""
Adrian did.
A notary seal appeared at the bottom.
I looked at it.
Then at the date.
It was the same day my mother had been unconscious, according to the hospital records.
I turned toward the directors.
"My mother was in a hospital bed that day. Her medical records show she was being treated under heavy medication.""
Adrian shook his head.
"Claire, please don't make emotional claims about documents you don't understand.""
I looked directly at him.
"Don't tell me what I understand.""
The room became quiet.
He smiled tightly.
"You're upset. I understand.""
I pulled out my chair and sat down.
"Then let's discuss the documents.""
Adrian seemed surprised.
I opened my folder.
Daniel had prepared everything.
Bank statements.
The original trust agreement.
The altered amendment.
The unauthorized electronic signatures.
And the photographs showing Thomas meeting Vanessa.
I placed them on the table.
"These are records of transfers from Whitmore Global subsidiaries into companies connected to you and Vanessa Cole.""
Vanessa immediately sat straighter.
"That's false.""
I turned toward her.
"Then perhaps you can explain why your name appears on a company that received millions of dollars from the offshore accounts.""
She looked at Adrian.
He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
"Those were legitimate consulting payments," he said.
"Then why were they concealed?""
"Commercial confidentiality.""
"Why was my signature used?""
Adrian leaned forward.
"Claire, enough.""
I didn't stop.
"Why did you ask me to sign a divorce agreement relinquishing all my interests in the company?""
He stood.
"Because you have no idea what you're talking about!""
My father looked at the board.
"That is precisely the problem.""
Daniel opened another folder.
"Before this meeting continues, I would like to inform everyone that the trust has filed an emergency application challenging the validity of the purported amendment.""
One director frowned.
"Does that mean today's vote is invalid?""
"At minimum, its legal effect is under immediate dispute.""
Adrian shook his head.
"The vote was valid. Claire approved it.""
He held up another document.
"Her electronic authorization is right here.""
I looked at it.
My name.
My signature.
My supposed consent.
Then I noticed something.
A small date stamp in the lower corner.
The document had been generated at 2:17 a.m.
That was when I had been asleep at my father's estate.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Can we prove where I was?""
Daniel nodded.
"We have the security footage, the estate access records, and your phone location data, subject to proper authentication.""
I looked at Adrian.
"You forged my signature.""
He laughed.
"Prove it.""
I leaned back.
"That's what we're here to do.""
Then the conference room doors opened.
A woman in a dark suit entered.
Behind her was an older man carrying a leather briefcase.
I recognized him immediately.
Dr. Samuel Hayes.
My mother's physician.
My stomach dropped.
Adrian smiled.
"Excellent. You're just in time.""
The doctor approached the table.
"Good morning.""
Daniel stood.
"Dr. Hayes.""
"Mr. Brooks.""
Adrian gestured toward the empty chair.
"Please explain the medical circumstances surrounding Mrs. Whitmore's final trust amendment.""
Dr. Hayes placed a folder on the table.
"Mrs. Whitmore was conscious and mentally competent when she signed the document.""
I stared at him.
"That's not true.""
He looked at me.
"Miss Whitmore, I understand your feelings, but I was her attending physician.""
"Then why do the medication records show she was heavily sedated?""
"Those records were incomplete.""
"Why?""
"Administrative error.""
Daniel immediately opened his laptop.
"Dr. Hayes, did you receive payments from Whitmore Advisory Services?""
The doctor stiffened.
"Excuse me?""
"Bank transfers totaling approximately eight hundred thousand dollars.""
Adrian interrupted.
"This is harassment.""
Daniel ignored him.
"Did you?""
Dr. Hayes looked toward Thomas.
For a split second, their eyes met.
I saw it.
The doctor had been waiting for someone else to tell him what to say.
My father noticed too.
"Doctor," he said quietly, "my wife trusted you.""
The man's expression changed.
"I did my best for Eleanor.""
"Then tell the truth.""
Dr. Hayes swallowed.
Adrian stepped toward him.
"Samuel, you don't need to answer that.""
The doctor looked at the board.
Then at me.
Finally, he spoke.
"The trust amendment was not signed by Mrs. Whitmore.""
The room erupted.
Adrian slammed his hand against the table.
"You're lying!""
Dr. Hayes flinched.
"I was told the document had been approved.""
"By whom?""
The doctor stared at Adrian.
"By you.""
Silence.
Adrian's face turned red.
"You're finished.""
Dr. Hayes continued.
"You arranged for the document to be placed in her medical file. You told me it was a routine authorization.""
Thomas moved toward the door.
Two security officers blocked him.
My father stood.
"Nobody leaves.""
Adrian pointed at the doctor.
"You have no proof!""
Dr. Hayes opened his briefcase.
"I kept the original medical administration records.""
He placed a small envelope on the table.
"And I have the payment instructions.""
Daniel examined them.
Then he looked at my father.
"This is significant.""
Adrian began pacing.
"This is a setup.""
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"Adrian, you told me the documents were legitimate.""
He turned toward her.
"Sit down.""
"You told me Claire had signed everything!""
"Vanessa, shut up.""
She backed away.
Then she pulled a small flash drive from her handbag.
"I have the original messages.""
Adrian stared at her.
"What?""
"All of them. You told me to create the holding company. You told me to receive the transfers. You said nobody would investigate because Claire would sign the divorce papers.""
The board members exchanged alarmed looks.
Vanessa placed the drive on the table.
"I kept copies because I knew you'd eventually blame me.""
Adrian's expression became terrifying.
"You ungrateful—"
He stopped himself.
But it was too late.
Everyone had heard.
I looked at him.
"Is this how you speak to the woman you replaced me with?""
He turned toward me.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
He leaned over the table.
"You have no idea what your mother really did.""
My father stepped between us.
"That's enough.""
Adrian straightened.
Then he smiled.
It was the same smile he had worn when he threw me out.
"Fine. Let's talk about Eleanor.""
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
"Your mother didn't simply create a trust for Claire.""
He placed it on the table.
"She made a second agreement. One that would have destroyed Richard if it had ever been discovered.""
My father went completely still.
Daniel looked at the paper.
His expression changed.
Adrian turned toward the directors.
"And if you want to know why Richard Whitmore has spent ten years protecting his daughter from the truth, you should ask him what happened to the original company founder.""
I stared at my father.
"Who was the original founder?""
Dad didn't answer.
Adrian smiled.
Then he delivered the final blow.
"Your mother knew Richard didn't build Whitmore Global alone. He took it from someone else.""
May you like
The room fell silent.
And for the first time since I had entered the boardroom, my father looked afraid.
