Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the House
Daniel Brooks had been my father's attorney for twenty-two years.
He was the kind of man who never raised his voice because he never needed to.
His charcoal-gray suit was perfectly pressed despite the rain. He carried a black umbrella in one hand and a leather briefcase in the other.
When he saw me standing barefoot beside the driveway, his expression hardened.
"Miss Whitmore.""
I hadn't heard anyone call me that in years.
I almost cried.
"Daniel.""
He removed his coat and placed it around my shoulders.
"Your father asked me to bring this.""
He opened the passenger door of the Mercedes.
Inside was a pair of cashmere blankets, a bottle of water, and a small medical kit.
"First, let's get you warm.""
I glanced toward the mansion.
"Adrian won't let you in.""
Daniel looked at the enormous house.
"That's interesting.""
"He's convinced it's his property.""
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
"Is he?""
Before I could answer, the front door opened.
Adrian came down the steps.
"Daniel?""
His expression shifted from surprise to forced friendliness.
"Good evening. I wasn't expecting you.""
Daniel closed the car door.
"Clearly.""
Adrian looked at me.
"Claire, what exactly did you tell him?""
I said nothing.
"Daniel, this is a private family matter. I appreciate Richard's concern, but there's no reason for him to involve himself.""
Daniel glanced at my bare feet.
"Your wife is standing outside in freezing rain.""
"Ex-wife," Adrian corrected.
"That is not what the legal documents say.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Well, they will shortly.""
Daniel held up the divorce agreement.
"Is this the document you asked her to sign?""
Adrian looked at the papers.
"Yes.""
"Without independent legal representation?""
"She doesn't need a lawyer. It's straightforward.""
Daniel turned one page.
His expression didn't change.
"Mr. Whitmore, this agreement contains several questionable provisions.""
Adrian laughed.
"Questionable?""
"Among other things, it attempts to transfer inherited property that does not belong to you.""
Adrian's eyes flickered.
"That's between Claire and me.""
"No. It isn't.""
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
She had changed into a silk robe.
"Adrian, what's happening?""
Daniel glanced at her.
Then his gaze stopped at the necklace around her neck.
"Miss Cole, I would strongly advise you not to remove or alter that jewelry.""
Vanessa touched the blue diamond.
"Excuse me?""
"That necklace is part of an inheritance belonging to my client.""
She laughed.
"Adrian gave it to me.""
Daniel opened his briefcase.
"Then Mr. Whitmore has apparently given you something he had no legal right to transfer.""
Adrian stepped closer.
"Enough. You can't come here and threaten people.""
Daniel removed a document.
"I haven't threatened anyone.""
He held it out.
"I have simply brought a copy of the property's ownership records.""
Adrian snatched the paper.
I watched his eyes move across the page.
His face changed.
"What is this?""
Daniel answered calmly.
"The deed.""
Adrian looked up.
"This house is mine.""
"Your name appears as the managing occupant of the property. The legal title is held by Whitmore Family Holdings.""
Adrian's fingers tightened around the paper.
"That's a technicality.""
"No, sir. It's a legal distinction.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Adrian, what is he talking about?""
He ignored her.
Daniel continued.
"The property was purchased through a family trust established by Mr. Richard Whitmore. Your residence here was conditional upon the terms of the original agreement.""
I stared at Daniel.
I knew my father had helped Adrian purchase the mansion.
I had never known the full arrangement.
Three years after our wedding, Adrian had been struggling to secure financing for his expanding company.
Dad had offered to help.
Adrian refused a direct loan, insisting he wanted to build his own success.
Eventually, Dad arranged for a property investment company to acquire the mansion and lease it to Adrian's business entity.
Adrian had signed the documents.
He simply never believed anyone would enforce them.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
"Your father wanted you to have an independent marriage, Miss Whitmore. He made every effort to keep his financial assistance separate from your personal relationship.""
Adrian threw the deed onto the wet stone.
"Richard is manipulating everything!""
Daniel picked up the paper.
"Your father has made no changes tonight. The documents have been in place for years.""
Vanessa looked between them.
"So you're telling me this house doesn't belong to Adrian?""
Daniel closed his briefcase.
"I'm telling you that you should not assume the gentleman standing beside you owns the things he uses to impress you.""
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Adrian grabbed my arm.
"Claire, we need to talk.""
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"Release her.""
Adrian let go.
"Don't interfere.""
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Then stop behaving as though you have the right to control her.""
I moved behind Daniel.
For the first time that evening, I felt protected.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"Claire, whatever you told your father, you need to correct it. This is a misunderstanding.""
I looked at him.
"Was Vanessa a misunderstanding too?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"You're emotional.""
"Was wearing my mother's necklace a misunderstanding?""
"That necklace was a gift.""
"It was stolen.""
Vanessa suddenly removed her hand from the pendant.
"Don't accuse me of stealing anything!""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Then you should have no objection to returning it.""
She looked at Adrian.
He didn't answer.
Daniel continued.
"Mr. Whitmore, I have another document you should review.""
He removed a thick folder.
"Effective immediately, the family office has suspended your access to the accounts and credit facilities guaranteed by Whitmore Capital.""
Adrian laughed.
It was an ugly, desperate sound.
"You can't do that.""
"Actually, we can.""
"My company has its own money.""
"Some of it, yes.""
"What does that mean?""
Daniel opened the folder.
"It means that Whitmore Capital holds the controlling secured interest in several of the financing arrangements supporting your operations.""
Adrian went pale.
I remembered the expensive office towers, the private jets, the photographs of him shaking hands with politicians and CEOs.
For years, he had described those things as proof of his independence.
Apparently, he had built his empire on foundations he didn't own.
"Richard wouldn't destroy a business over a family disagreement," Adrian said.
Daniel studied him.
"Your father-in-law isn't here because of a family disagreement, sir.""
"Then why is he here?""
"Because his daughter was thrown out of her home in the rain while wearing nothing but a torn dress.""
Adrian looked at me.
His expression changed again.
"Claire, sweetheart.""
I flinched.
He had not called me sweetheart once during the past year.
Now that he was frightened, he remembered the word.
"Come inside," he said softly.
"Let's discuss this properly.""
I stared at him.
"You told me to get off your property.""
"I was angry.""
"You canceled my cards.""
"We can fix that.""
"You threatened the servants.""
He glanced toward the doorway.
Mrs. Bennett was standing there again.
Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"You're making this bigger than it needs to be.""
I shook my head.
"No, Adrian. I'm finally seeing how big it already was.""
A second car pulled up.
A woman stepped out carrying a garment bag.
Daniel smiled faintly.
"Your father anticipated that you might need something warmer.""
I opened the garment bag.
Inside was a cream-colored cashmere coat.
Underneath it was a simple black dress and a pair of leather shoes.
My father's thoughtfulness nearly broke me.
I changed inside the car.
When I returned, Daniel was speaking to Adrian.
"Mr. Whitmore, my client has requested that all original records relating to the Whitmore Global financing arrangements be preserved.""
Adrian folded his arms.
"Tell Richard to call me himself.""
Daniel nodded.
"He will.""
Then he glanced at his watch.
"In approximately fifteen minutes.""
Adrian's confidence returned slightly.
"Good. I'll explain everything.""
Daniel closed the briefcase.
"I wouldn't prepare a speech.""
"Why?""
"Because your explanation may not be the most important thing he wants to hear.""
Adrian frowned.
Daniel turned toward me.
"Miss Whitmore, your father would like you at the penthouse tonight. There is something he wants you to see.""
"What?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he handed me a sealed envelope.
My name was written across it in my father's handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Adrian standing outside a bank in Manhattan with a woman I had never seen before.
The date was printed on the bottom.
Four months earlier.
On the back, Dad had written:
Claire, I wanted to believe I was wrong. But this is only the beginning.
I stared at the photograph.
"Who is she?""
Daniel looked toward Adrian.
"That is something your father believes you deserve to know.""
Before I could ask another question, Adrian shouted from the steps.
"Claire!""
I turned.
He was holding his phone.
His face was white.
"Your father has just frozen the operating account of Whitmore Global.""
Daniel didn't react.
Adrian looked at me with something dangerously close to panic.
"Tell him to stop.""
I slipped the photograph into my purse.
"No.""
Adrian took a step toward me.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
I looked at the man who had once promised to protect me.
"Neither did you.""
Then Daniel opened the car door.
May you like
And as we drove away, I saw Vanessa standing alone in the mansion doorway, still wearing my mother's necklace.
But she wasn't smiling anymore.
