Chapter 4: The Man Who Came to Silence Me

"Thomas Reed is downstairs.""

The security announcement repeated through the penthouse.

My father looked at Daniel.

"Did he announce himself?""

"Yes, sir. He says he has an urgent message concerning Whitmore Global.""

Dad glanced at the clock.

It was 11:43 p.m.

"Interesting timing.""

I looked at the security monitor mounted beside the fireplace.

Thomas stood in the lobby wearing a dark navy overcoat. His silver hair was perfectly combed, and he carried the same leather portfolio he had brought to our tenth-anniversary dinner.

He looked calm.

Almost amused.

For eight years, I had considered Thomas one of the few people Adrian genuinely respected. He had been at our wedding, attended family celebrations, and once spent an entire Christmas helping me organize a charity fundraiser after my mother died.

He had called me his little sister.

Now Evelyn had warned me not to trust him.

"Don't let him in," I said.

My father studied my face.

"Why?""

"Because Evelyn said he knew where the original trust agreement was.""

Daniel nodded.

"That makes his visit particularly suspicious.""

Dad pressed the intercom.

"Send him up.""

I turned toward him.

"Dad!""

"Claire, if Thomas is involved, I want to hear what he has to say.""

"What if he's dangerous?""

My father gave me a small smile.

"Then he has chosen a very unfortunate building to enter.""

Two minutes later, the elevator doors opened.

Thomas stepped into the penthouse.

"Richard.""

He extended his hand.

My father didn't take it.

"Thomas.""

Thomas looked around.

Then his eyes landed on me.

"Claire. My goodness. I heard there was some confusion tonight.""

I folded my arms.

"Confusion?""

"Adrian told me you were upset.""

"Did he also tell you he threw me out of my own home?""

Thomas adjusted his cufflinks.

"I'm sure emotions were running high.""

"Did he tell you he gave my mother's necklace to Vanessa?""

Thomas paused.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

"That unfortunate situation can be resolved.""

I stared at him.

"Can it?""

He placed his portfolio on the table.

"Richard, I came because Adrian is making decisions he doesn't fully understand. The situation at Whitmore Global is becoming unnecessarily complicated.""

Dad poured himself a glass of water.

"Then explain it.""

Thomas opened his portfolio.

"Adrian believes there is a way to preserve the company's operations while resolving the disagreement over the ownership structure.""

"Which disagreement?"" Dad asked.

"The trust arrangement.""

My father smiled without warmth.

"There is no disagreement. The trust owns what the documents say it owns.""

Thomas leaned forward.

"Richard, let's be practical. The company has grown substantially under Adrian's leadership. He has relationships with investors, lenders, and international partners. Removing him abruptly could damage everyone.""

"Everyone except you, apparently.""

Thomas's smile disappeared.

"What is that supposed to mean?""

Daniel placed a document on the table.

"This is a summary of transfers made from three Whitmore Global subsidiaries over the last twenty-four months.""

Thomas glanced at it.

Then he closed the folder.

"I don't handle daily accounting.""

"Your signature appears on several authorizations.""

"I approve hundreds of documents.""

"That must be exhausting.""

Thomas ignored Daniel.

He turned toward me.

"Claire, perhaps you and I should speak privately.""

"No.""

His eyebrows rose.

"Excuse me?""

"I said no.""

He looked at my father.

"She's clearly distressed. I don't think it's appropriate to involve her in complicated corporate matters tonight.""

My father set down his glass.

"Thomas, she is the controlling beneficiary of the trust you're discussing. She has every right to be involved.""

Thomas's expression changed.

It was subtle.

A tightening around the eyes.

A slight movement of his jaw.

Then he smiled again.

"Of course.""

I stepped closer.

"Why did you tell Adrian I was traveling?""

Thomas blinked.

"What?""

"Evelyn said Adrian told everyone I was traveling. Why?""

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Why did you authorize documents using my signature?""

"I didn't.""

"Why is Vanessa listed as the beneficiary of a new holding company?""

Thomas closed his portfolio.

"Richard, this conversation is becoming absurd.""

My father nodded toward the security officers.

"Then perhaps you should leave.""

Thomas stood.

Before he could reach the elevator, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

For the first time, he looked genuinely uncomfortable.

I saw the caller's name.

Adrian.

Thomas rejected the call.

My father noticed.

"Answer it.""

Thomas stared at him.

"I don't think that's necessary.""

"Then put it on speaker.""

Thomas reluctantly accepted.

"Adrian?""

My husband's voice exploded through the phone.

"Where the hell are you?""

Thomas looked around.

"With Richard.""

There was a pause.

Then Adrian said something that made the room go silent.

"Did you get the original document?""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Not yet.""

"Then what are you doing there?""

"Adrian, we need to discuss—"

"Don't discuss anything! You were supposed to secure the trust papers before Claire found out!""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Thomas looked at me.

He knew I had heard.

Adrian continued.

"And tell Vanessa to get the necklace back. If Claire discovers what's hidden inside it, we're finished.""

My father reached for the phone.

"Good evening, Adrian.""

Silence.

Then my husband spoke in a much quieter voice.

"Richard.""

"You seem to be having a difficult evening.""

"There's been a misunderstanding.""

"Yes. I've heard.""

"Thomas is trying to help resolve this.""

"Is he?""

My father looked at Daniel.

Daniel quietly signaled to the security officers.

Dad continued.

"Adrian, I suggest you stop making decisions tonight.""

"Richard, please. Let me explain.""

"You had ten years to explain.""

The call ended.

Thomas stood motionless.

I looked at him.

"What's hidden inside my mother's necklace?""

He didn't answer.

"Thomas.""

He picked up his portfolio.

"Claire, listen to me. Your mother was a very intelligent woman. She understood that people around her weren't always what they appeared to be.""

"Then why are you helping Adrian?""

Thomas looked at my father.

"Because your husband is not the only person with something to lose.""

He walked toward the elevator.

One of the security officers stepped into his path.

"Mr. Reed, we'll need to inspect your portfolio.""

Thomas's face hardened.

"On whose authority?""

Daniel answered.

"Mine, pending your voluntary cooperation.""

Thomas looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something almost like pity in his eyes.

Then he placed the portfolio on the table.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were printed bank records, two passports, a flash drive, and several photographs.

One photograph showed Vanessa wearing my mother's necklace.

Another showed Adrian holding a small velvet box.

But the final photograph made my blood run cold.

It showed my mother.

She was sitting in the garden of our old family home, holding the same necklace.

Beside her stood Thomas.

The date on the photograph was twelve days before she died.

I picked it up.

"Why were you with my mother?""

Thomas looked away.

"She asked me to help her with something.""

"What?""

He remained silent.

My father stepped forward.

"Thomas, I suggest you start telling the truth.""

Thomas swallowed.

"Your mother knew Adrian was moving money.""

I looked at him.

"Before she died?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"She noticed discrepancies in the company accounts. She asked me to investigate.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Did she tell Dad?""

Thomas hesitated.

"She wanted to.""

"Then why didn't she?""

His eyes met mine.

"Because she discovered that someone close to your father was involved.""

My father went completely still.

"Who?""

Thomas shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying," Daniel said.

Thomas looked toward the elevator.

Then he leaned closer to me.

"Claire, there's something your mother left behind. Something she never trusted your father to hold.""

I stared at him.

"What is it?""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"The original trust agreement isn't in the necklace.""

I remembered Evelyn's warning.

"Then where is it?""

Thomas looked at the blue diamond photograph in my hand.

"Your mother hid the location inside the necklace. The document itself is somewhere else.""

"Where?""

He glanced at my father.

Then he whispered:

"Inside the one thing Adrian never thought to search.""

Before I could ask what he meant, the elevator doors opened.

A security officer stepped out.

"Mr. Whitmore, we have a situation.""

Dad turned.

"What situation?""

"The police are downstairs. They have a warrant concerning alleged financial misconduct involving Whitmore Global.""

Daniel frowned.

"Who requested it?""

The officer handed him a sealed envelope.

Daniel opened it.

His expression changed.

"The complaint was filed by Adrian Whitmore.""

My father stared at the paper.

Then he looked at me.

May you like

"Your husband has just made his next move.""

And somewhere across the city, Adrian was apparently preparing to make sure I never reached the truth first.
