Chapter 3: The Secret Behind His Fortune

My father's penthouse overlooked Central Park.

I hadn't visited in nearly three years.

The last time I had been there, I had argued with him over Adrian's business practices and accused him of treating my husband like a failure.

Now, as the elevator doors opened, the familiar scent of cedarwood and fresh lilies greeted me.

A fire burned in the marble fireplace.

Two security officers stood near the windows.

My father was waiting beside the dining table.

Richard Whitmore was seventy-one years old, but he carried himself with the authority of a man who had spent his life making decisions that affected thousands of people.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His navy suit was immaculate.

But when he saw me, his expression broke.

"Claire.""

I walked toward him.

He didn't wait for me to say anything.

He wrapped both arms around me.

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

Then I started crying.

Not the quiet tears I had shed outside the mansion.

These were different.

They came from somewhere deep inside me, from years of pretending everything was fine.

"I'm sorry, Dad.""

He held me tighter.

"Don't apologize.""

"I should have listened.""

"No.""

He gently pulled back and looked at my face.

"You should have been able to trust the man you married. That's not something you need to apologize for.""

I lowered my eyes.

"He told me I was nothing without him.""

My father's jaw tightened.

"Then he has made a serious mistake.""

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

"Mr. Whitmore, I have the documents.""

Dad nodded.

"Thank you, Daniel.""

He turned toward me.

"Have you eaten?""

I shook my head.

"Not really.""

He pulled out a chair.

"Sit down. We'll talk after you have something warm.""

A housekeeper brought soup and bread.

I tried to eat, but my mind kept returning to the photograph.

Finally, I placed it on the table.

"Who is this woman?""

Dad looked at the picture.

His expression became unreadable.

"Her name is Evelyn Shaw.""

"Who is she?""

"She was a financial consultant working with one of Adrian's investment partners.""

"Was?""

Dad nodded.

"She left the company six months ago.""

I studied the photograph.

"Why was Adrian meeting her?""

My father sat across from me.

"Because she discovered something unusual in the company's accounts.""

I stopped eating.

"What?""

"Money had been transferred from several corporate subsidiaries into an offshore investment structure. The transfers were authorized using documents bearing your signature.""

I stared at him.

"My signature?""

"Yes.""

"I never signed anything.""

"I know.""

Dad pushed another folder toward me.

Inside were copies of bank authorizations, corporate resolutions, and financial statements.

My name appeared repeatedly.

Claire Whitmore.

My signature appeared beneath several documents.

I recognized the handwriting.

It looked like mine.

But it wasn't.

"That's not my signature.""

"I know that too.""

I looked up.

"How long has this been happening?""

Dad exchanged a glance with Daniel.

"At least two years.""

My stomach twisted.

Two years.

For two years, I had been sitting across from Adrian at breakfast, asking about his meetings and listening to him complain about difficult investors.

Meanwhile, someone had been using my identity to authorize financial transactions.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Dad's eyes softened.

"I tried.""

"You never told me about this.""

"I told you I was concerned about his financial structure. I asked you to let my team conduct an independent review.""

"And I refused.""

"Yes.""

He didn't sound angry.

That made it worse.

I turned another page.

There were transfers involving companies I had never heard of.

One account was registered in the Cayman Islands.

Another belonged to a private investment company in Delaware.

A third had been used to purchase a luxury apartment in London.

I looked at the transaction dates.

One transfer had occurred on the anniversary of my mother's death.

I put the paper down.

"Did Adrian steal from me?""

Dad leaned back.

"I believe he used your name to create the appearance of legitimacy around transactions that he wanted to conceal.""

"Why?""

"That is what we're investigating.""

I stared at him.

"Is he going to prison?""

Daniel answered carefully.

"That depends on what the evidence establishes. We have reason to believe there may be fraudulent signatures, unauthorized transfers, and violations of financing agreements. But we won't make conclusions before the review is complete.""

My father looked at me.

"What matters tonight is protecting you.""

I wiped my eyes.

"I don't want you to destroy him just because he hurt me.""

Dad was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "Claire, I don't intend to punish him for breaking your heart.""

He pointed to the documents.

"I intend to make sure he answers for what he did with your name, your inheritance, and the money he was entrusted to manage.""

I nodded slowly.

Then another question came to mind.

"Why did he think he could do all this? Why was he so certain you wouldn't interfere?""

My father looked toward the window.

"Because I made a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

"I believed that keeping my distance would give your marriage the independence you wanted.""

He turned back toward me.

"I should have paid closer attention.""

Daniel opened another folder.

"There's one more matter.""

Dad nodded.

"Show her.""

Daniel removed a printed email.

It had been sent from Adrian's corporate account to an address belonging to Evelyn Shaw.

The subject line read:

*PROJECT LEGACY — FINAL TRANSFER.*

I began reading.

The message discussed transferring ownership of several assets before the end of the financial year.

Then I saw my name.

Once Claire signs the revised marital settlement, the remaining Whitmore interests can be consolidated without further questions from her side.

My hands began to shake.

I read the sentence again.

Then the next one.

She believes she has no financial rights. She won't challenge anything if I keep the pressure on.

I looked up.

"He planned this.""

Dad nodded.

"Yes.""

"He was going to make me sign the divorce agreement.""

"That's what it appears to show.""

I remembered the document Adrian had held outside the mansion.

The waiver.

The transfer of marital interests.

The language about inherited property.

It wasn't a spontaneous attempt to end our marriage.

It was part of a plan.

I had nearly signed away everything.

"There's more," Daniel said.

He turned another page.

The email contained a second attachment.

A proposed list of assets to be transferred to a new holding company.

At the top was the name of the company.

Whitmore Legacy Partners.

I frowned.

"Is that Adrian's company?""

Dad shook his head.

"No.""

He pointed to the registration details.

The controlling shareholder was listed as Vanessa Cole.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Vanessa?""

Daniel nodded.

"She appears to have been involved in the proposed transfer structure.""

I thought of her standing in my doorway.

Her champagne glass.

Her emerald dress.

My mother's necklace.

"Was she with him for the money?""

Dad didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he removed another photograph from the folder.

This one showed Vanessa sitting in a restaurant with Evelyn Shaw.

The date was six months earlier.

A third photograph showed Adrian entering the same restaurant twenty minutes later.

I looked at the three images.

They had been working together.

But there was something else.

A name printed at the bottom of one of the documents.

The name of the person who had approved the transfer structure.

It wasn't Adrian.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was a man named Thomas Reed.

I knew that name.

Thomas had been Adrian's closest business adviser for almost eight years.

He had attended our wedding.

He had stood beside Adrian at every major company celebration.

I remembered him giving a toast at our tenth anniversary dinner.

"To Adrian and Claire," he had said.

"The perfect partnership.""

I looked at my father.

"Thomas was involved?""

Daniel nodded.

"His signature appears on several documents.""

I stood up.

"I need to know everything.""

Dad rose too.

"You will.""

"No more secrets. No more protecting me by keeping things from me.""

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"Agreed.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"There is another reason your father asked me to bring you here tonight.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

He placed a final document on the table.

It was a corporate ownership certificate.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The majority voting interest in Whitmore Global's parent company was held by a private trust.

A trust established by my mother.

I stared at the document.

"Mom?""

Dad nodded slowly.

"Your mother created it before she died. She wanted to ensure that you would always have financial independence, regardless of whom you married.""

I looked at the percentage listed beside the trust.

Fifty-one percent.

I read it again.

"Does this mean...""

"It means," Dad said, "that the company Adrian has been calling his for the past ten years is controlled by the trust your mother established for you.""

My knees weakened.

"Does Adrian know?""

"He knows there are outside investors. He doesn't know the full structure.""

"Why didn't you tell him?""

Dad gave a sad smile.

"Because your mother specifically instructed me never to let him confuse access with ownership.""

I touched the paper.

My mother had anticipated something I hadn't.

She had left me more than diamonds.

She had left me protection.

Daniel checked his phone.

"Mr. Whitmore, we have a problem.""

Dad turned.

"What is it?""

"Adrian has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning.""

"On what grounds?""

"He intends to remove the current trustees and appoint himself as the controlling executive.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Can he do that?""

"Not without a valid shareholder resolution.""

"Then why are you concerned?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because he has already circulated a resolution bearing Claire's electronic signature.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Daniel placed his phone on the table.

On the screen was a scanned document.

My name appeared at the bottom.

The signature was almost perfect.

But this time, there was something worse.

The document stated that I voluntarily surrendered my voting rights to Adrian.

And it carried a date.

Tomorrow.

I looked at my father.

"He knows I haven't signed it.""

Dad's voice dropped.

"Apparently, he doesn't intend to wait for your permission.""

My phone suddenly vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice whispered.

"Claire? It's Evelyn Shaw.""

I froze.

Dad motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"How did you get this number?"" I asked.

"I've been trying to reach you for weeks. Your husband told everyone you were traveling.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why are you calling?""

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn spoke quickly.

"Because Adrian knows your father has discovered the offshore transfers, and he's planning to leave the country tonight.""

I looked at Dad.

"What?""

Evelyn continued.

"And Claire, there's something else you need to know. The money isn't the biggest secret.""

"What do you mean?""

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your mother didn't leave you that necklace just because it was a family heirloom. There's a document connected to it. Adrian has been searching for it for years.""

I glanced at the blue diamond in the photograph Daniel had taken outside the mansion.

"What document?""

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

"The original trust agreement. The one that proves who really controls Whitmore Global.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where is it?""

"Your husband believes it's hidden inside the necklace.""

Before I could ask another question, I heard a man's voice in the background.

"Evelyn? Who are you talking to?""

The call went silent.

Then a message appeared on my screen.

*Claire, don't trust Thomas Reed. He knows where the original document is.*

I looked at my father.

He had already read the message.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Dad reached for his phone.

"Daniel.""

"Yes, sir?""

"Cancel tomorrow's board meeting.""

Daniel nodded.

Dad looked directly at me.

"Your husband thinks he has until morning to take control of your mother's company.""

He paused.

"Let's make sure he understands that tomorrow morning belongs to you.""

May you like

And just as he finished speaking, the penthouse security system announced an unexpected visitor.

*Thomas Reed was downstairs.*
