Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The recording continued playing through the laptop speakers.

My mother's breathing was faint. Somewhere in the background, a medical monitor beeped steadily.

Then Adrian's voice came again.

"Mrs. Whitmore, you should have stayed out of our business.""

My father reached for the laptop and paused the recording.

His hand was trembling.

"Play it again.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Richard—"

"Play it.""

Daniel pressed the button.

This time, I listened carefully.

My mother's voice sounded weak, but there was no confusion in it.

"Adrian, Claire trusts you. She believes you're building a future together. How can you do this to her?""

Adrian answered without hesitation.

"Because Claire doesn't understand business. She never has.""

"That's not an excuse.""

"Your husband understands the arrangement.""

"Richard doesn't know what you've done.""

There was a pause.

Then Adrian spoke again.

"Richard knows exactly what he needs to know.""

My father stood abruptly.

"He's lying.""

I looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because I never authorized those transfers.""

The recording continued.

My mother coughed.

"Adrian, I have copies of everything. If you don't stop, I will give them to the authorities.""

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Adrian's voice became colder.

"You're making a mistake.""

"Leave my daughter alone.""

"Your daughter is already involved.""

"What have you done to her?""

"Nothing she won't forgive.""

My blood ran cold.

My mother began crying.

"Please. She's all I have.""

Adrian responded with six words.

"Then you should have protected her.""

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

My father covered his mouth.

For the first time in my life, I saw him look completely helpless.

"Did he threaten her?"" I whispered.

Daniel closed the laptop.

"The recording suggests that he was aware of the financial misconduct and was attempting to intimidate her.""

I looked at my father.

"Mom knew.""

He nodded.

"She knew.""

"She was trying to protect me.""

"Yes.""

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the first faint light of morning was appearing over the trees.

I remembered Adrian sitting beside me at my mother's funeral.

He had held my hand and whispered that we would get through it together.

He had kissed my forehead.

He had told me that my mother would have wanted me to be happy.

All those years, I had believed him.

Now I wondered whether he had been comforting me or making sure I never questioned what happened.

My phone rang.

Evelyn.

I answered immediately.

"Where are you?""

"At a hotel near Hartford. I couldn't stay at my apartment.""

"Why?""

"Someone broke in last night.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did they hurt you?""

"No. But they searched everything. My laptop is gone, and so are the original financial records.""

"Do you have copies?""

"I managed to upload some documents before they arrived.""

"Who broke in?""

"I don't know. But Claire, listen carefully. I found the hospital medication logs.""

Daniel immediately motioned for me to put her on speaker.

Evelyn continued.

"Your mother was administered a medication that wasn't listed in her treatment plan. The authorization was entered under Dr. Hayes's credentials.""

My father stepped closer.

"Was it an error?""

"I don't think so. The dosage was unusual, and the administration times were altered afterward.""

I felt sick.

"Are you saying someone deliberately made her weaker?""

"I'm saying the records require an independent medical investigation.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Samuel Hayes.""

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"There's more. The doctor received payments from a consulting company connected to Adrian.""

Daniel immediately began writing.

"Can you identify the company?""

"Whitmore Advisory Services.""

My father looked at Daniel.

"That company was dissolved two years ago.""

"Not completely," Evelyn replied.

"It was transferred to a new entity.""

"Which one?""

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn answered.

"Whitmore Legacy Partners.""

The same company listed under Vanessa's name.

I felt the pieces connecting.

Adrian had used Vanessa as the public face of the new company.

Thomas had handled the trust documents.

Dr. Hayes had controlled my mother's medical records.

And someone had made sure my father would appear responsible.

"Can you send us everything?"" Daniel asked.

"Yes. But I need protection.""

My father took the phone.

"Ms. Shaw, this is Richard Whitmore. You have my word that you will be protected. Daniel will arrange independent legal representation for you.""

Evelyn exhaled.

"Thank you.""

Before she ended the call, she said one more thing.

"Claire?""

"Yes?""

"Your mother left another message. It wasn't on the USB drive. It was stored in a private voicemail account.""

I sat down.

"What did she say?""

"I haven't listened to it yet. I wanted to speak to you first.""

"Can you send it?""

"Yes.""

The call ended.

A few minutes later, an audio file arrived.

I pressed play.

My mother's voice filled the room.

"Claire, sweetheart. If you've found this message, then I'm afraid I didn't get the chance to tell you everything.""

My eyes filled immediately.

"I know you love Adrian. I know you believe he loves you. I wanted so badly to believe that too.""

She paused to catch her breath.

"But love cannot survive where there is no honesty.""

I covered my mouth.

"There's something you must understand about the company. Your father built the original business, but the controlling interest was placed in a trust for you. Adrian knows that. He has known for longer than you realize.""

A faint sound came from the background.

Then my mother continued.

"Do not let him convince you that the trust belongs to him. Do not let Thomas persuade you that your father is your enemy. And whatever happens, never sign anything Adrian places in front of you.""

The recording ended with a whisper.

"I love you, Claire. More than anything.""

I broke down.

My father sat beside me and held my hand.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes?""

His expression changed.

"What do you mean the board has assembled?""

He listened.

Then he looked at my father.

"Adrian is holding an emergency meeting at the Whitmore Global headquarters. He's claiming that Richard has been removed as an authorized representative of the trust.""

My father stood.

"On what grounds?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"He's presenting the amended trust document bearing your wife's signature.""

I looked at the clock.

6:18 a.m.

Adrian had moved the meeting forward.

He wasn't waiting for the courts.

He was trying to take the company before anyone could stop him.

My father reached for his jacket.

"Call every trustee. I want an emergency injunction filed immediately.""

Daniel nodded.

"And the board?""

"We'll attend.""

I stood too.

"I'm coming.""

My father looked at me.

"Claire, you don't have to.""

"Yes, I do.""

He studied my face.

Then he nodded.

"Then we'll go together.""

I picked up my mother's necklace from the table.

The blue diamond caught the morning light.

For ten years, Adrian had treated me like a woman who needed his permission to exist.

This morning, I was going to walk into the company he claimed to own and remind him who my mother had intended to protect.

But as we approached the car, Daniel received another message.

He read it twice.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, there's a problem.""

"What now?""

"The board has already voted.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Voted for what?""

Daniel swallowed.

May you like

"Adrian has been appointed acting chairman.""

And according to the preliminary minutes, the vote had been approved using my electronic signature.
