Chapter 9: The Brother I Never Knew
For several seconds, I couldn't understand what Michael had said.
Not because the words were complicated.
Because they were impossible.
*Your father's son.*
I looked at Alexander.
My father.
The man who had spent the last hour fighting for me.
The man who I had spent nine years believing abandoned me.
His face told me everything before he spoke.
Pain.
Regret.
Fear.
"Dad?""
My voice barely came out.
He didn't answer.
And that silence shattered something inside me.
"Please.""
I took a step back.
"Don't make me hear it from someone else.""
Alexander closed his eyes.
Then he whispered the words I never expected.
"I have a son.""
The room felt smaller.
Colder.
I stared at him.
"A son?""
He nodded slowly.
"I should have told you.""
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn't know what else to do.
"That's what everyone says.""
My voice cracked.
"I should have told you.""
Daniel said it.
Evelyn said it.
Everyone who destroyed my life had a reason why they kept secrets.
And now my father was standing in front of me with another one.
Michael looked away.
"I didn't want her to find out like this.""
I turned toward him.
"You knew?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"How long?""
His eyes dropped.
"Since before you were born.""
The words hit harder.
Before I was born.
My entire life had been connected to a secret I never knew existed.
I looked at Alexander.
"Who is he?""
My father swallowed.
"His name is Nathan.""
The name felt unfamiliar.
Like a stranger entering a story that was supposed to be mine.
"Where is he?""
Alexander didn't answer.
That frightened me more than anything.
"Dad.""
His voice broke.
"He died.""
The warehouse went silent.
I felt my anger pause.
Not disappear.
Just pause.
"When?""
"Nine years ago.""
The same time.
The same year everything changed.
The same year my father disappeared from my life.
I looked at Michael.
"You knew him?""
Michael nodded.
"Nathan was my closest friend.""
I frowned.
"Your friend?""
Michael looked at me.
"Yes.""
Then he looked at Alexander.
"Before everything happened.""
I turned back to my father.
"What happened?""
Alexander looked older than I had ever seen him.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like the weight of nine years had finally caught up.
"Nathan was my son from a relationship before I met your mother.""
He took a breath.
"I didn't know about him at first.""
I listened quietly.
"His mother raised him alone. When I found out, I tried to be part of his life.""
"Did you love him?""
The question escaped before I could stop it.
My father looked at me.
"More than I knew how to show.""
That hurt.
Because I knew exactly what it felt like to be loved by someone who didn't know how to show it.
"Why didn't I know?""
His eyes filled.
"Because your mother asked me to wait.""
I froze.
"Mom knew?""
He nodded.
"She wanted to protect you.""
I shook my head.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
My voice became sharper.
"Protect me from what?""
My father looked at Michael.
Michael answered.
"The Whitmores.""
I stared.
"What?""
Michael stepped closer.
"Nathan discovered the financial crimes inside the Whitmore company.""
The pieces began connecting.
Slowly.
Painfully.
"He was investigating them.""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he realized Daniel and his family were using the company to hide illegal transfers.""
I looked at Alexander.
"And you helped him?""
My father nodded.
"We were trying to expose them.""
"Then why did everyone say Nathan disappeared?""
Silence.
Michael's face hardened.
"Because they made sure he did.""
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?""
Michael looked toward the dark warehouse windows.
"It means Nathan didn't leave.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"He was killed.""
The words were quiet.
But they changed everything.
I covered my mouth.
"No.""
My father looked away.
"I tried to stop it.""
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
My anger returned.
"You suspected?""
My father flinched.
"You knew my brother was in danger and you didn't tell me?""
"I thought I was protecting you.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Tears filled my eyes.
"You were protecting yourself.""
The words hurt him.
But I needed him to hear them.
Because I had spent my entire life being protected through silence.
And silence had only created more pain.
Michael stepped forward.
"There is more.""
I looked at him.
"Of course there is.""
He accepted the anger.
"I found evidence that Nathan discovered the Whitmore plan before he died.""
"What plan?""
"The plan to control the company through Daniel's marriage.""
My heart tightened.
"The same plan they used against me?""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
He opened another folder.
Inside were photographs.
Emails.
Documents.
And one picture that made my blood freeze.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Jonathan.
Rachel.
All together.
Years ago.
Before my pregnancy.
Before the court case.
Before the gala.
They weren't reacting to a problem.
They were creating one.
"They knew.""
My voice was barely audible.
Michael nodded.
"They knew about the inheritance clause.""
I looked at the picture.
"How?""
"Nathan found the records.""
"And they killed him because of it.""
Michael didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The truth was already there.
Then I noticed something.
A date.
The date on the photograph.
My hands trembled.
"This was taken nine years ago.""
Alexander looked at it.
"Yes.""
I stared.
"That's impossible.""
Everyone looked at me.
Because I remembered.
Nine years ago.
The night my father and I stopped speaking.
The night he told me he had to leave.
The night I thought he chose business over me.
I whispered:
"That was the night I met Daniel.""
My father's face changed.
Michael looked at him.
"Alexander never told her.""
I turned.
"Told me what?""
My father looked devastated.
"Claire...""
"What?""
He took a breath.
"The first time you met Daniel wasn't a coincidence.""
The world went silent.
"What are you saying?""
Alexander looked at the picture.
"Daniel knew who you were.""
My stomach dropped.
"No.""
"He knew you were my daughter.""
I stepped back.
"That's impossible.""
Michael shook his head.
"It isn't.""
"Why?""
The question came out broken.
"Why would he marry me?""
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Michael said:
"Because he thought marrying you was the easiest way to get control of your family's assets.""
I felt sick.
The entire marriage.
The memories.
The promises.
Were they all fake?
My father looked at me.
"But something changed.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"Daniel didn't expect to love you.""
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because a small part of me still wondered.
Was anything real?
Michael looked at me.
"But when Daniel realized the baby could activate the trust protection clause, everything changed.""
My hand moved over my stomach.
"He wasn't trying to take the baby because he hated me.""
Michael shook his head.
"He was trying to take the baby because your child was the one thing he couldn't control.""
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Then another.
Everyone froze.
Marcus's voice suddenly came through the communication device.
"Claire, we have movement outside.""
My father's expression changed.
"Who?""
A pause.
Then Marcus answered.
"Several vehicles.""
My heart started racing.
Michael looked terrified.
"They found us.""
The warehouse lights flickered.
Then the doors at the far end slammed open.
Men rushed inside.
My father moved instantly in front of me.
"Stay behind me.""
But then one of the men stepped forward.
Not a stranger.
Not security.
Someone we knew.
Someone who should have been nowhere near that warehouse.
My breath stopped.
Because standing at the entrance was the person who started this entire nightmare.
Jonathan Pierce.
My attorney.
And he was holding a folder.
May you like
A folder marked with one word.
*PATERNITY.*
