Chapter 6: The Lawyer Who Sold My Silence

The name felt impossible.

My attorney.

For several seconds, I couldn't understand the words.

My brain rejected them before my heart could.

Because attorneys were supposed to protect you.

They were supposed to stand between you and the people trying to destroy you.

They were supposed to be the person you trusted when everything else collapsed.

But mine had been standing on the other side of the battlefield.

Helping build the weapon pointed directly at me.

"No.""

The word came out quietly.

Marcus watched my reaction.

"Claire, are you certain?""

I looked at him.

"Who is it?""

He hesitated.

"Jonathan Pierce.""

The ballroom shifted around me.

Jonathan.

My attorney for six years.

The man who handled my grandmother's estate.

The man who told me not to panic when the court papers arrived.

The man who sat beside me during every meeting and promised:

"We're going to fight this.""

I remembered those words now.

And suddenly they sounded different.

Not like reassurance.

Like a performance.

My father noticed my expression.

"You know him.""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"How close?""

I swallowed.

"Close enough that I trusted him with everything.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Jonathan?""

I turned toward him.

"You know him.""

Daniel looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

My chest tightened.

"You knew?""

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

Then he corrected himself.

"I knew he worked with my family before.""

My father's expression darkened.

"And you never told Claire?""

Daniel didn't respond.

Of course he didn't.

Because every secret in that family had a purpose.

Every hidden conversation.

Every missing document.

Every carefully chosen lie.

They were all pieces of the same machine.

Marcus looked toward the exit.

"We need to move quickly.""

"Why?"" my father asked.

"Because if Jonathan knows the investigation has started, he may destroy evidence.""

The words made my stomach drop.

"Can he?""

Marcus nodded.

"He has access to legal files, communication records, and privileged documents.""

My hands trembled.

Because suddenly I remembered every conversation.

Every private detail.

Every fear I confessed.

Every plan I shared.

Jonathan knew exactly how I would fight.

He knew exactly what I had.

And he knew exactly how to take it away.

My father stepped closer.

"What did he do?""

Marcus looked at the folder.

"We're still gathering everything.""

"Tell us what you know.""

Marcus opened the file.

"Jonathan Pierce represented Claire during the custody proceedings.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"He submitted psychological reports claiming Claire demonstrated unstable behavior.""

My face went numb.

"I never saw those reports.""

"I know.""

Marcus pulled out another page.

"Because they were never created by the doctor listed.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

Marcus looked at me.

"The signature was forged.""

I felt like the floor disappeared.

All those months.

All those hearings.

All those moments when I begged someone to believe me.

The evidence against me had been fake.

My father closed his fist.

"They manufactured a case.""

"Yes.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"And someone inside the family funded it.""

Daniel looked angry.

"You're accusing me?""

"No.""

Marcus's voice stayed calm.

"I'm explaining what the evidence shows.""

Daniel looked away.

And again, I saw it.

Not innocence.

Fear.

Because he knew more than he wanted to admit.

My father noticed too.

"Daniel.""

He looked up.

"How much did you know?""

Daniel stayed silent.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

"How much?""

Finally, Daniel whispered:

"I knew Jonathan was helping my mother.""

My heart sank.

"Helping her do what?""

Daniel looked at me.

"I thought it was just to make you agree to a divorce.""

I stared at him.

"You let a lawyer create fake evidence against your pregnant wife because you wanted an easier divorce?""

His face broke.

"I didn't know.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You didn't want to know.""

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the truth.

Daniel had spent months choosing comfort over questions.

And now he wanted sympathy because the consequences were finally real.

A security officer approached Marcus.

"Sir.""

Marcus turned.

The officer handed him a phone.

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

"What is it?"" my father asked.

Marcus showed him the message.

My father read it.

His face became cold.

"What?""

I looked between them.

"What happened?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Jonathan knows.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

"We don't know.""

He turned the phone around.

There was a single message.

No number.

No name.

Just words.

*YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THE FILES.*

A chill moved through me.

Because whoever sent it wasn't running.

They were threatening us.

My father looked at Marcus.

"Can you trace it?""

"We're working on it.""

Then another message arrived.

Everyone watched the screen.

This one was longer.

*CLAIRE THINKS THIS IS ABOUT MONEY. SHE DOESN'T KNOW THE REAL REASON YET.*

My breathing stopped.

My father looked at me.

"Real reason?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

But deep down...

I knew that wasn't true.

Because there was one thing everyone kept avoiding.

One question nobody answered.

Why me?

Why go this far?

Why destroy my life?

Money explained some of it.

Control explained some of it.

But not all.

Marcus looked at the message again.

"There's more.""

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

"What?""

He looked at me.

"The person who sent this says they have proof that the pregnancy was the reason the plan started.""

My hand moved over my stomach.

The baby.

Everything always came back to the baby.

My father stepped closer.

"What proof?""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"A DNA report.""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Fear.

Confusion.

Anger.

"You knew?""

I looked at him.

"Knew what?""

He couldn't answer.

Because even he didn't know what he was asking.

Marcus continued.

"The report was allegedly created eight months ago.""

My heart stopped.

Eight months.

Before the custody battle.

Before the gala.

Before everything.

"Eight months ago," I whispered.

My father looked at me.

"What happened eight months ago?""

I tried to remember.

Then I did.

The night everything changed.

The night Daniel disappeared.

The night I found out I was pregnant.

The night I received a phone call from someone I didn't know.

The night someone told me:

"Do not trust your husband.""

I had spent months trying to forget that voice.

Because I thought it was a warning from a stranger.

Now I wondered if it had been the only honest thing anyone had told me.

Marcus looked at me.

"Claire.""

I met his eyes.

"Do you know anything about this DNA report?""

Slowly...

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Everyone looked at me.

My father stepped closer.

"What are you saying?""

I took a deep breath.

"The report exists.""

Daniel's face changed.

"You saw it?""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"But someone sent me a copy.""

"Who?""

I closed my eyes.

Because this was the secret I had protected.

The one I never wanted revealed.

"The same person who saved my life that night.""

Marcus frowned.

"Who?""

I looked toward the ballroom doors.

Because suddenly I realized something.

The person who warned me.

The person who helped me.

The person who knew the truth before everyone else.

Had been watching this entire plan unfold.

And they were the only person who could explain why the Whitmores were so desperate to destroy me.

I whispered the name.

A name that made Daniel step backward.

A name that made Evelyn's face lose all color.

"Michael.""

My father looked confused.

"Who is Michael?""

I stared at Daniel.

"Your brother.""

The ballroom froze.

Because Daniel's family had always told everyone one thing.

Michael Whitmore had disappeared nine years ago.

They said he left.

They said he abandoned them.

They said he was dead to the family.

But I knew the truth.

Michael was alive.

And he knew everything.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*CLAIRE, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO YOUR BABY'S FATHER IS, COME ALONE.*

And beneath it was an address.

A location outside the city.

My hands went cold.

May you like

Because the biggest secret of the entire nightmare...

Was waiting for me.
