Chapter 8: The Truth Written in Blood
I couldn't move.
The words hung in the darkness between us.
*The baby you are carrying is the reason your husband was willing to let you die.*
My first instinct was disbelief.
My second was anger.
"Don't.""
My voice shook.
"Don't do what everyone else has done.""
Michael looked confused.
"What?""
"Don't stand there and pretend you know my life better than I do.""
The pain in his expression surprised me.
Because he didn't look offended.
He looked guilty.
"I understand why you don't believe me.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You don't understand anything.""
My hand moved over my stomach.
"Everyone has been telling me a different version of my life for months.""
My voice became sharper.
"Daniel told me I was the problem.""
"Evelyn told everyone I was dangerous.""
"Jonathan destroyed me with fake evidence.""
"Rachel betrayed me.""
I looked at him.
"So forgive me if I don't immediately trust another Whitmore.""
Michael lowered his eyes.
"You have every right.""
That answer caught me off guard.
Because I expected another excuse.
Another defense.
Another manipulation.
Instead, he accepted it.
He opened the folder.
"I didn't bring you here because I wanted forgiveness.""
He placed the documents on an old metal table.
"I brought you here because I failed you.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
He looked at the papers.
"Nine years ago, I found out what my family was capable of.""
The warehouse became silent.
"I discovered my father had been using the family company to hide illegal financial agreements.""
I listened carefully.
"Daniel was supposed to inherit everything.""
Michael continued.
"But he wasn't ready.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?""
Michael looked at me.
"Everything.""
He pulled out a document.
"The Whitmore family trust had a condition.""
I recognized those words.
Evelyn had mentioned it.
"Daniel needed a stable marriage and a legitimate heir.""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
"That doesn't explain why they wanted me gone.""
"It does.""
He turned the page.
"Because the trust was changed.""
My eyebrows tightened.
"What?""
Michael pushed the document toward me.
I read the first lines.
My hands became cold.
"The heir's spouse...""
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Michael took a breath.
"Your grandmother.""
I froze.
"My grandmother?""
"Your grandmother and my father knew each other.""
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
"She invested in the original Whitmore company.""
Michael continued.
"Years before Daniel met you, your grandmother created a legal agreement.""
I looked down again.
The words became clearer.
"Protection clause.""
Michael nodded.
"She knew the Whitmores.""
My chest tightened.
"She knew what kind of people they were?""
"She suspected.""
A strange feeling moved through me.
My grandmother had always been careful.
She was the person who taught me never to sign anything without reading every line.
Never to trust money without understanding the person behind it.
But I never knew why.
Michael pointed at the document.
"Your grandmother added a condition.""
I looked at him.
"What condition?""
"If any Whitmore family member attempted to use marriage, legal manipulation, or financial control to harm you...""
He paused.
"The trust would transfer.""
"To who?""
Michael looked at my stomach.
I stopped breathing.
"No.""
He nodded.
"Your child.""
The warehouse seemed to tilt.
"My baby?""
"Yes.""
I stared at the document.
"They knew?""
Michael's expression darkened.
"Not at first.""
"Then how?""
He looked away.
"Because I told them.""
My heart sank.
"You?""
He nodded.
"I discovered the documents before Daniel did.""
"Why would you tell them?""
Pain crossed his face.
"Because I thought I was protecting you.""
I didn't understand.
"Explain.""
Michael sat down.
His voice became quieter.
"When I learned about the trust, I tried to warn my family.""
He laughed bitterly.
"I thought if Daniel understood the consequences, he would stop.""
"And he didn't.""
"No.""
Michael looked at me.
"He became obsessed.""
The word was heavy.
"With what?""
"Control.""
My stomach tightened.
"He believed your grandmother had humiliated our family.""
I shook my head.
"She protected me.""
"Exactly.""
Michael looked at the floor.
"And Daniel couldn't accept that someone outside the Whitmore name had power over him.""
I thought about Daniel.
The way he hated losing.
The way every argument became a competition.
The way he always needed to be right.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Michael opened another file.
"This is the DNA report.""
My heart stopped.
The one everyone kept mentioning.
The one that started this entire nightmare.
I didn't touch it.
"Why do you have it?""
"Because I ordered it.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
Michael's eyes met mine.
"Because I knew Daniel suspected.""
My throat tightened.
"Suspected what?""
He hesitated.
Then said:
"That he might not be the biological father.""
The words hurt.
Even though I had heard the possibility before.
Even though I knew there was more.
It still hurt.
I looked away.
"He's wrong.""
Michael nodded.
"I know.""
"Then why does this matter?""
"Because Daniel believed it.""
The answer was worse.
Because truth didn't always matter to people like Daniel.
Belief was enough.
Fear was enough.
Suspicion was enough.
Michael continued.
"Daniel didn't want to know the truth.""
"Then what did he want?""
Michael looked at me.
"He wanted control of the situation before anyone else could.""
I closed my eyes.
The court.
The lies.
The humiliation.
The gala.
It wasn't about proving I was unfit.
It was about making sure I couldn't protect my child.
"Who is the father?""
The question finally came out.
Michael became quiet.
For the first time since I entered the warehouse, he looked afraid.
"Claire...""
"Who?""
He looked at the folder.
Then at me.
"The DNA report confirms Daniel is not the father.""
I felt my heart stop.
But I already knew that was coming.
The next words were the ones I feared.
"The biological father is someone Daniel has spent years trying to destroy.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Then the warehouse doors opened.
My father rushed in.
"Claire!""
I turned.
"Dad?""
His face was tense.
"You shouldn't have come here alone.""
"I wasn't alone.""
His eyes moved to Michael.
And suddenly...
Everything changed.
My father knew him.
Not just recognized him.
Knew him.
"Alexander.""
Michael stood.
The two men stared at each other.
I looked between them.
"What is happening?""
Neither answered.
My father stepped closer.
"You didn't tell her?""
Michael looked away.
"She deserved the truth.""
My father's expression hardened.
"Not from you.""
My heart began racing.
"Dad.""
He looked at me.
There was something in his eyes.
Something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
"Claire...""
I whispered.
"Who is the father?""
Silence.
The kind of silence that tells you the answer before anyone speaks.
My father looked at Michael.
Michael looked at him.
Then Michael finally said:
"Alexander knows.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
My father closed his eyes.
"Claire...""
I stepped back.
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"No, don't do that.""
He reached toward me.
"Listen to me.""
I shook my head.
"All these years...""
My chest tightened.
"You knew?""
My father's silence broke me.
Because it was an answer.
"You knew who the father was?""
He looked devastated.
"I knew there was a possibility.""
"A possibility?""
Tears filled my eyes.
"My entire life has been turned upside down.""
I stepped away.
"And you knew?""
My father looked at my stomach.
Then at me.
"I was trying to protect you.""
The same words.
Everyone used the same words.
Protect you.
Help you.
Save you.
But somehow...
I was always the one left in the dark.
Michael quietly said:
"Claire, there's more.""
I laughed through my tears.
"Of course there is.""
He looked at me.
"The father isn't just someone Daniel hates.""
A pause.
"He is the reason Daniel and your father stopped speaking nine years ago.""
I stared at Alexander.
My father's face went pale.
Because he knew.
I whispered:
"Who?""
Michael took a breath.
Then said the name.
The name that connected every betrayal.
Every secret.
Every lie.
"The father of your baby...""
May you like
He looked at Alexander.
"...is your father's son.""
