Chapter 5: The Person I Trusted Most
I stared at the name at the bottom of the email until the letters blurred.
For a moment, I convinced myself my eyes were playing tricks on me.
Because the person whose name appeared there was impossible.
Not because they were innocent.
Because they were the one person I had never questioned.
The one person who held my hand when everyone else walked away.
The one person who whispered that I deserved better.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
"No.""
The word escaped before I could stop it.
My father immediately noticed.
"Claire.""
I couldn't look at him.
I couldn't look at anyone.
Because the truth sitting in my hands was worse than anything Daniel had done.
Daniel was my husband.
I expected him to hurt me.
Evelyn was his mother.
I expected her to protect her family.
Serena had never hidden her jealousy.
But this person...
This person knew my heart.
They knew my fears.
They knew exactly where I was vulnerable.
Marcus watched me carefully.
"Do you know the person who sent this?""
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
The ballroom waited.
Everyone wanted the answer.
Everyone wanted the final piece of the story.
But nobody understood that saying the name out loud would make it real.
My father gently touched my shoulder.
"You don't have to do this alone.""
I looked at him.
Nine years.
Nine years of silence between us.
Nine years of believing he chose business over me.
And yet he was the only person standing beside me when everything fell apart.
I took a breath.
"The email was sent by...""
My voice cracked.
Then I forced myself to continue.
"Rachel Collins.""
A wave of confusion moved through the room.
Daniel frowned.
"Who?""
I looked at him.
"The person who was pretending to be my friend.""
The color disappeared from his face.
Because he knew exactly who Rachel was.
Rachel had been my closest friend since college.
She was there when Daniel proposed.
She was there when we bought our first home.
She was there when I cried after every argument.
She knew everything.
And apparently...
She used everything.
Marcus looked at the document.
"Rachel Collins was your personal assistant?""
I nodded.
"For three years.""
"And she had access to your schedule, financial records, and private information?""
My stomach tightened.
"Yes.""
My father closed his eyes briefly.
Because he understood.
The Whitmores didn't need to break into my life.
I had invited someone in.
Someone I trusted.
Marcus continued reading.
"The email states: 'Claire will never suspect me. She thinks I'm helping her prepare for court.''"
My chest felt heavy.
I remembered.
Every late-night conversation.
Every cup of coffee.
Every time Rachel sat across from me and said:
"Claire, I promise we'll get you through this.""
She wasn't helping me.
She was reporting back.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
"Where is Rachel?""
Everyone turned toward him.
I looked at him.
That was the first time all night he sounded genuinely afraid.
Not for his reputation.
For himself.
Marcus answered.
"We are currently locating her.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You don't understand.""
My father looked at him.
"Explain.""
Daniel hesitated.
Then for the first time, his anger disappeared.
"I never wanted things to go this far.""
I almost laughed.
The sentence was so familiar.
People always said that after they crossed every line.
After the damage was already done.
"You didn't want me kneeling in front of five hundred people?"" I asked.
He looked down.
"No.""
"Then what did you want?""
Silence.
The answer was obvious.
Control.
But Daniel wasn't ready to say it.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Mr. Whitmore, if you have information about this plan, now would be the time to share it.""
Daniel looked around.
At his mother.
His sister.
The investigators.
Then at me.
And I saw something strange.
Regret.
Real regret.
But regret didn't erase betrayal.
"I thought it was just a divorce strategy.""
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
"What?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"My mother told me you would take everything.""
"Because she wanted you to believe that.""
"I didn't know about the court manipulation.""
I looked at him.
"You signed the documents.""
His silence answered.
"Daniel.""
My voice became quieter.
"You signed papers saying I was dangerous.""
His eyes closed.
"I thought it would scare you into negotiating.""
My heart sank.
There it was.
The truth.
Not the complete truth.
But enough.
He didn't need to swing the belt.
He didn't need to lock me out.
He didn't need to destroy my reputation.
He only needed to believe he had the right to control me.
And that was enough.
"You didn't think I was innocent," I said.
Daniel looked away.
"I was angry.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You were comfortable.""
That hurt him.
I could see it.
Because it was true.
People don't always hurt others because they hate them.
Sometimes they hurt them because they believe they are allowed to.
Evelyn suddenly interrupted.
"This is pointless.""
Everyone looked at her.
She had regained some confidence.
"The girl betrayed our family too.""
My father turned.
"Careful.""
She ignored him.
"She knows exactly what happened.""
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
Evelyn smiled.
"You still haven't told them everything.""
My body went cold.
Again.
Another secret.
Another weapon.
It felt like my entire life had become a courtroom where everyone had hidden evidence except me.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"What are you implying?""
She looked directly at me.
"Tell them why you kept the pregnancy secret from Daniel.""
The room froze.
Daniel stared.
"What?""
I closed my eyes.
Because this was the part I had avoided.
The part I knew would change how everyone saw me.
Including my father.
Including the investigators.
Including Daniel.
My father looked at me.
"Claire?""
I whispered.
"I didn't know if Daniel was safe.""
Daniel looked hurt.
"Safe?""
I turned toward him.
"Do you remember when I told you I was pregnant?""
His face changed.
A memory.
"I was happy.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You were not.""
The ballroom became silent.
"You looked at me and asked one question.""
Daniel frowned.
"I don't remember.""
"I do.""
My voice trembled.
"You asked if the baby would make me stay.""
His face went pale.
Because he remembered.
I continued.
"You didn't ask if I was okay.""
I looked around the room.
"You didn't ask about the baby.""
I looked at Daniel.
"You asked if this meant I couldn't leave.""
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The pregnancy was not the beginning of our problems.
It was when Daniel realized he could lose control of me.
Marcus studied me.
"So you hid the pregnancy?""
I nodded.
"Not forever.""
I touched my stomach.
"I needed time.""
"Time for what?""
I looked at the documents.
"To find out if the man I married was still the man I thought he was.""
Daniel's expression broke.
"And?""
I looked at him.
"I found my answer.""
A heavy silence followed.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He stepped away to answer.
For several seconds, he listened.
Then his expression changed.
Everyone noticed.
"What happened?"" my father asked.
Marcus looked at me.
"We found Rachel Collins.""
My heart stopped.
"Where?""
He hesitated.
"At the airport.""
Daniel immediately looked alarmed.
"She's leaving?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
A pause.
"She was waiting for someone.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"Who?""
Marcus looked down at his phone.
Then back at me.
"The person who ordered her to destroy you.""
The room became silent.
And then he said the name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made Daniel turn completely pale.
Because it wasn't someone from my past.
It wasn't someone from my family.
May you like
It was someone who had been standing beside us from the beginning.
*"Your own attorney, Claire.""*
