Chapter 7: The Brother They Buried

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*CLAIRE, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO YOUR BABY'S FATHER IS, COME ALONE.*

My fingers went numb.

Not because I believed it.

Because I was terrified that I did.

For months, everyone had been telling me what my life was.

Daniel told me I was unstable.

Evelyn told everyone I was dangerous.

Jonathan built a legal argument around the idea that I couldn't be trusted.

Even Rachel, my closest friend, had pretended to protect me while secretly helping destroy me.

Every person I trusted had a version of reality they wanted me to accept.

And now Michael Whitmore was offering another one.

The truth.

Or another lie.

My father noticed my expression.

"Claire?""

I locked my phone.

Too late.

He had already seen enough.

"Who was that?""

I didn't answer.

His eyes narrowed.

"Claire.""

I looked at him.

"My baby.""

The words changed everything.

My father's face softened immediately.

"Is something wrong?""

I looked around the ballroom.

The investigators.

The security officers.

The broken family.

The people who had spent years hiding things.

I lowered my voice.

"Michael Whitmore contacted me.""

The reaction was instant.

Daniel froze.

Evelyn's face lost color.

Serena looked like she had seen a ghost.

My father noticed.

"Who is Michael?""

Daniel didn't answer.

So I did.

"His older brother.""

My father looked at Daniel.

"You never mentioned him.""

Daniel swallowed.

"There's nothing to mention.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because that was the same phrase people used when they were hiding something.

Nothing to mention.

Nothing important.

Nothing you need to know.

I turned toward Daniel.

"You told everyone he left.""

"He did.""

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

"But you told everyone he abandoned the family.""

Daniel looked away.

Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.

"You need to stop.""

Everyone looked at her.

She was no longer pretending to be calm.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

I stared at her.

"Then explain.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

My father noticed.

"Why is everyone afraid of this man?""

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked between them.

"Who is Michael Whitmore?""

Daniel finally spoke.

"He was my brother.""

"Past tense?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"He left after a family dispute.""

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

"Is that accurate?""

She looked away.

Again.

Silence.

Marcus sighed.

"Clearly, it isn't.""

My phone vibrated again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

This time from Michael.

*THEY WILL TRY TO STOP YOU FROM COMING. THAT'S HOW YOU'LL KNOW I'M TELLING THE TRUTH.*

My heart started beating faster.

Because I knew the Whitmores.

And I knew exactly what they would do.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Don't go.""

I looked at him.

The irony almost hurt.

The man who spent months destroying me was now telling me to be careful.

"Why?""

His expression changed.

"Because he's dangerous.""

I studied his face.

"Are you afraid of him?""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

My father stepped between us.

"Claire is not going anywhere alone.""

I looked at him.

"I have to.""

"No.""

His voice was firm.

"You don't.""

I shook my head.

"If Michael has the truth, we need it.""

Marcus nodded slightly.

"She's right.""

My father looked at him.

"You're agreeing with this?""

"I'm saying whoever sent that message knows something important.""

He looked at me.

"But she should not go alone.""

I looked at the address again.

An old warehouse district outside the city.

A place abandoned years ago.

It felt like a trap.

Because it probably was.

But traps worked both ways.

Sometimes the person waiting inside wasn't the only one caught.

"I'll go," I said.

My father immediately shook his head.

"No.""

"Dad.""

"No.""

The word was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I had not heard fear in my father's voice since I was a child.

"I lost nine years with you," he whispered.

My heart tightened.

"I can't lose you again.""

For a moment, the ballroom disappeared.

There was no Daniel.

No Evelyn.

No investigators.

Just my father and me.

The two people who had both been hurt by years of silence.

I touched his arm.

"You won't.""

He looked at me.

"Promise me.""

"I promise.""

He didn't believe me.

But he nodded.

Because he knew I had already made my decision.

Thirty minutes later, I sat in the back seat of a security vehicle heading toward the address.

Not alone.

My father had made sure of that.

Two investigators followed at a distance.

Marcus stayed on communication.

And my father sat beside me.

Quiet.

Watching the city disappear through the window.

Finally, he spoke.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

I knew what he meant.

Not Michael.

Everything.

The pregnancy.

The abuse.

The court case.

The fear.

I looked down.

"Because I thought you chose your work over me.""

His face changed.

"Claire.""

"I was eighteen when Mom died.""

He looked away.

"I know.""

"You disappeared into business.""

"I was trying to build something.""

"You were trying not to feel anything.""

The words hurt him.

But they were true.

"I needed you.""

His voice was quiet.

"I know.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"You don't.""

The car became silent.

"I spent years thinking my own father didn't want me.""

His eyes filled slightly.

"And I spent years thinking you hated me.""

I froze.

"What?""

He looked out the window.

"When you stopped answering my calls, I thought you were done with me.""

I swallowed.

"I thought you were done with me.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he reached over.

Not like a billionaire.

Not like a businessman.

Like my father.

"I'm sorry.""

Two words.

Simple.

But they broke something inside me.

Because I had waited years to hear them.

"I am too.""

The car slowed.

We had arrived.

The warehouse stood alone.

Dark.

Silent.

The kind of place where people went when they didn't want to be found.

My father immediately noticed something.

"What?""

I looked ahead.

A light was on inside.

Someone was waiting.

Marcus's voice came through the communication device.

"Claire, remember. Stay alert.""

I opened the door.

My father grabbed my hand.

"Don't forget.""

I looked back.

"You are not alone.""

I nodded.

Then I walked inside.

The warehouse smelled like dust and old metal.

My footsteps echoed.

"Michael?""

No answer.

I walked farther.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"You look exactly like your mother.""

I stopped.

A man stepped forward.

Older than Daniel.

Tired eyes.

A face marked by years of regret.

Michael Whitmore.

The brother they claimed disappeared.

The man who supposedly abandoned his family.

He looked at my stomach.

Then at me.

"I was hoping you would never have to learn the truth.""

I swallowed.

"Why did you bring me here?""

He looked behind me.

At the entrance.

Then back at me.

"Because if I don't tell you now...""

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"...they will kill the evidence before morning.""

My blood went cold.

"What evidence?""

Michael reached into his coat.

And pulled out a folder.

A folder with my name written across the front.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Claire, Daniel Whitmore is not the only person who knows your baby's father.""

He opened the folder.

"And the truth is the reason they tried to destroy you.""

I stared at him.

"What are you saying?""

Michael looked directly into my eyes.

"The baby you are carrying...""

May you like

He paused.

"...is the reason your husband was willing to let you die.""
