Chapter 8: The Million Dollar Betrayal

“Your inheritance.””

James’s words echoed through the phone.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

For several seconds, the entire room disappeared.

The birthday cake.

The decorations.

The people standing around me.

All of it faded.

Because there was only one thought in my mind.

My inheritance.

The money my grandmother left me.

The money I was told had never existed.

The money Derek somehow knew about.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone was watching me.

Especially Derek.

His face had changed.

The confidence was gone.

The excuses were gone.

Only fear remained.

“You knew.””

My voice was quiet.

Derek swallowed.

“Claire…”

“You knew about my inheritance.””

He shook his head quickly.

“No.””

The speed of his answer almost made me smile.

A lie before the question was even finished.

“Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t lie to me again.””

Linda looked confused.

“What inheritance?””

I turned toward her.

“You didn’t know?””

She looked at Derek.

And for the first time, I saw genuine surprise on her face.

“No.””

She looked back at me.

“I didn’t.””

I believed her.

Not because she deserved my trust.

But because Derek’s expression told me this was something he had hidden from everyone.

Even his mother.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“What inheritance?””

I looked down.

“My grandmother passed away eight years ago.””

I remembered that year clearly.

The grief.

The funeral.

The lawyer who handled everything.

The conversation where I was told my grandmother had left me a personal letter and some family belongings.

I had never been told about money.

Because I never asked.

I had never cared.

My grandmother had always taught me that money was temporary.

Character was permanent.

Apparently, Derek had learned the opposite.

James was still on the phone.

“Claire, are you there?””

“Yes.””

“I need you to come to the office tomorrow morning.””

“Why?””

“Because we found evidence that someone accessed the account shortly after your wedding.””

My eyes moved to Derek.

“How?””

James paused.

“Through documents signed with your information.””

My heart sank.

“What documents?””

“We’re still investigating.””

Derek suddenly stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“Claire.””

That old tone.

The one he used when he expected obedience.

It didn’t work anymore.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

The words surprised him.

Good.

They should have.

Because for seven years, I had let him believe he could.

James spoke again.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.””

“Thank you.””

I ended the call.

The room became silent.

Then Derek laughed.

A nervous, broken laugh.

“You think you understand everything.””

I stared at him.

“Do I not?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You’re only hearing one side.””

I looked at Rebecca.

Then Martin.

Then Linda.

“Funny.””

My voice was cold.

“Because every side I hear leads back to you.””

Derek’s face tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made plans.””

That stopped him.

Because it was true.

A mistake happened once.

Derek had built an entire system.

The lies.

The documents.

The hidden accounts.

The marriage agreement.

The insurance policy.

None of those were accidents.

They were choices.

Rebecca opened the folder again.

“There’s something else.””

Derek immediately reacted.

“Rebecca.””

She ignored him.

“I didn’t want to say this before because I wasn’t sure.””

I looked at her.

“Say it.””

She pulled out a document.

“This is a copy of a communication between Derek and a financial advisor.””

I took it.

The date was two months before our wedding.

My eyes scanned the page.

The words were clear.

*Marriage will provide access to stronger financial stability.*

My hands trembled.

Below that:

*Once married, assets can be combined and redirected.*

I looked up.

“Redirected.””

Derek’s voice became desperate.

“Claire, that doesn’t mean what you think.””

I stared at him.

“What does it mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

Always silence.

Linda looked at her son.

“Derek.””

Her voice was different now.

Disappointed.

“Tell her.””

He looked at his mother.

“You too?””

Linda shook her head.

“I defended you for years.””

She pointed toward the papers.

“But I didn’t know this.””

Derek’s face changed.

“You’re abandoning me?””

“No.””

Linda looked exhausted.

“I’m realizing I never knew you.””

That sentence seemed to hurt him more than anything I had said.

Because maybe the only person he still expected to protect him was his mother.

And even she was seeing him differently.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the decorations moved slightly in the wind.

The same decorations I bought that morning.

The same house where I thought I was building a family.

I remembered the first time Derek brought me here.

He had held my hand.

He had said:

“This will be our forever home.””

I believed him.

I was so young.

So trusting.

I thought love meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

I thought marriage meant standing beside someone through their worst moments.

I never realized some people saw kindness as an opportunity.

“Why?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Nobody answered.

I turned around.

“Why me?””

Derek looked at me.

“What?””

“Why did you choose me?””

His face changed.

For once, he looked honest.

“Because you were everything I wasn’t.””

I waited.

“You were stable.””

He swallowed.

“You were disciplined.””

Another pause.

“You believed in people.””

My eyes burned.

“And you thought that made me easy to use.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“That was exactly what you thought.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

The worst thing about the truth was that it didn’t need to be dramatic.

Sometimes it was just quiet.

A man standing in front of you.

Unable to deny who he was.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

I looked at the screen.

*I need to talk to you before tomorrow’s meeting. I was there the night Derek transferred the money.*

I frowned.

Who was this?

I replied:

*Who is this?*

The answer came immediately.

*Someone who helped Derek hide your inheritance.*

My stomach dropped.

I looked around the room.

Nobody noticed.

Nobody except Rebecca.

She saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I showed her the message.

Her face changed.

“That’s not possible.””

“Why?””

She stared at the phone.

“Because everyone who knew about that transfer…”

She stopped.

“Everyone who?””

She looked toward Derek.

Then whispered:

“Only three people knew.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Derek.””

A pause.

“His financial advisor.””

Another pause.

“And me.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the message again.

Someone who helped Derek hide my inheritance.

But Rebecca said she didn’t.

And if Derek’s advisor was involved…

Then who was the third person?

I slowly turned toward the only person who had not spoken.

The person standing quietly near the kitchen.

Linda.

Her face had gone pale.

Because she knew exactly what I was thinking.

“Linda.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

My voice lowered.

“Were you the third person?””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then her eyes filled with something I had never seen before.

Regret.

“I never knew he would go this far.””

The room froze.

Derek turned toward her.

“Mom.””

I stared.

“You knew.””

Linda closed her eyes.

And when she opened them again, she finally admitted the truth.

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

“I knew about the account.””

My heart sank.

“But I didn’t know he would steal from you.””

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew.””

Derek stepped forward.

“Mom, don’t.””

But Linda kept talking.

May you like

And the next words changed everything.

“Because I was the one who told Derek where to find your inheritance papers.””
