Chapter 4: The Marriage Built On A Lie

“I didn’t marry you because of love.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Not because I hadn’t suspected something was wrong.

I had.

Deep down, every person knows when they are being loved differently than they deserve.

But hearing it from the person who once promised forever was something else.

Derek stood in the middle of the kitchen, his face pale.

Linda immediately stepped forward.

“Derek, stop talking.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She froze.

“Why don’t you want him to talk?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence told me more than any confession could.

I slowly placed my purse back on the counter.

“Go ahead.””

Derek stared at me.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You started this.””

He looked down.

For the first time since I met him, Derek looked small.

Not powerful.

Not intimidating.

Just a man trapped by his own lies.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not an answer.””

He rubbed his hands over his face.

“When I met you, I was already in trouble.””

I waited.

“My business was failing.””

The words came out slowly.

“I had debts. People were calling me every day. I was losing everything.””

I looked at him.

“And you saw me.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

His eyes lifted.

“You were at that conference.””

I remembered.

Seven years earlier.

A business conference in Chicago.

I had been there representing my company.

At the time, my consulting firm was still small, but growing quickly.

I remembered Derek approaching me after my presentation.

He had smiled.

He had complimented my work.

He had told me I was the most impressive person he had met all week.

I thought he admired me.

I thought he saw me.

Apparently, he saw something else.

“You researched me.””

Derek didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

“I needed to know who you were.””

“Why?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because you were successful.””

The room felt colder.

I stared at him.

“You married me because you thought I could save you.””

He looked away.

“At first…”

I laughed once.

“At first?””

He closed his eyes.

“I didn’t plan for it to happen like that.””

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I know it doesn’t.””

I looked toward Linda.

“And you knew?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Linda crossed her arms.

“I knew he was struggling.””

“You knew he was using me.””

Her expression hardened.

“Watch your words.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I want to know.””

My voice shook slightly.

“Did you know your son chose me because he needed money?””

Linda’s silence was the answer.

A painful one.

I nodded slowly.

“Wow.””

Derek looked ashamed.

“Claire.””

I held up my hand.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

He stopped.

Because he knew.

The old version of me would have cried.

She would have begged for an explanation.

She would have searched for a reason to forgive.

But that woman was gone.

I looked at him.

“Was anything real?””

Derek didn’t answer.

That hurt more than the confession.

Because hesitation was its own answer.

I turned away.

“Seven years.””

My voice became quiet.

“Seven years of my life.””

“Claire, I did love you.””

I looked back.

“When?””

He stared.

“What?””

“When did you start loving me?””

He had no answer.

I continued.

“Before or after you realized my company was worth millions?””

His face changed.

And I knew.

That was the moment.

The moment he realized I knew everything.

“How did you find out?””

I smiled sadly.

“You never asked enough questions about me.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“You knew my income.””

“I thought—”

“You thought my work was a hobby.””

He went silent.

“You thought I was just lucky.””

I shook my head.

“But you never asked what my company actually did.””

I picked up my phone.

“You never knew my clients.””

I opened a file.

“You never knew my contracts.””

I looked at him.

“You never knew I became the majority owner of my company two years ago.””

Derek stared.

“What?””

Linda looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

I looked at her.

“The consulting work you laughed at?””

I smiled.

“It became an investment firm.””

The silence was immediate.

Derek’s expression changed.

All those years.

All those times he called my work “little projects.””

All those times Linda told people I was lucky Derek provided for me.

They had both been wrong.

“You had money.””

I looked at Derek.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the number didn’t matter.

The fact that he cared did.

That was the part that hurt.

Not the debt.

Not the house.

Not even the lies.

It was knowing that the person beside me had spent years calculating my value.

Derek stepped closer.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“No.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You made choices.””

His expression tightened.

“I was scared.””

“And I was your solution.””

He looked away.

I continued.

“You didn’t marry me.””

My voice cracked.

“You invested in me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Linda suddenly laughed.

A strange, bitter laugh.

“You really think you’ve won?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She smiled.

“You found out Derek needed your money.””

She stepped closer.

“But you still don’t know everything.””

I felt a familiar cold feeling.

The same feeling I had when she first revealed Derek’s debt.

“What else?””

Linda looked at Derek.

He immediately shook his head.

“Mom.””

She ignored him.

“Tell her.””

Derek looked furious.

“Don’t.””

I stared at them.

“What is it?””

Linda smiled.

“The reason Derek married you wasn’t just because of your money.””

My heart slowed.

“What does that mean?””

Derek looked desperate.

“Claire, don’t listen to her.””

Linda continued.

“He married you because of someone else.””

The words made no sense.

“Someone else?””

She nodded.

“Someone from his past.””

Derek’s face went pale.

“Mom, stop.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

And once again, his silence betrayed him.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Linda looked directly at me.

Then she said a name.

A name I had never heard before.

But one that instantly changed the entire story.

“Rebecca.””

The kitchen went silent.

I stared at Derek.

“Who is Rebecca?””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Linda smiled.

Because she knew.

She had finally found the one secret that could hurt him.

“She was the reason he needed money.””

My hands went cold.

“Derek.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something worse than guilt.

Regret.

Not regret for hurting me.

Regret for being exposed.

“What happened with Rebecca?””

Derek looked down.

Then his phone buzzed.

Everyone looked toward the sound.

He slowly pulled it out.

His face changed as he read the message.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I took one step closer.

“Derek.””

His fingers tightened around the phone.

Then he whispered:

“She found me.””

A chill went through me.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And the fear in his eyes told me everything.

“Rebecca.””
