Chapter 3: The Secret Derek Buried For Years
“The house was never the only thing he was hiding.””
Linda’s words stayed in the air.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The woman who had spent years acting like she knew everything suddenly looked like she had revealed something she wished she could take back.
Derek turned toward her.
“Mom.””
Just one word.
But the fear behind it was obvious.
Linda ignored him.
“You deserve to know the truth.””
I looked between them.
A strange calm settled over me.
Six months ago, I thought the worst thing I would discover was Derek trying to use the house as collateral without telling me.
I thought the worst betrayal was financial.
I was wrong.
“What are you talking about?”” I asked.
Derek stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Linda laughed bitterly.
“Now you want to protect her?””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Interesting.””
Derek’s face tightened.
“Mom, stop.””
“No.””
Linda pointed at him.
“You spent years letting her believe she was your partner.””
She looked back at me.
“But she was never your partner, was she, Derek?””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Derek didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Because silence was sometimes louder than a confession.
I slowly closed the front door.
Not because I was staying.
Because I needed to hear this.
“What did he do?””
Linda looked at Derek.
Then at me.
“You should ask him.””
I crossed my arms.
“Derek.””
He stared at the floor.
“Say something.””
“I was going to tell you.””
I almost laughed.
“When?””
He looked up.
“When things were better.””
I stared at him.
“When things were better?””
The words felt unbelievable.
“When exactly was that supposed to happen?””
He had no answer.
I walked closer.
“After you dragged me across the kitchen?””
His jaw tightened.
“That wasn’t—”
“Don’t.””
My voice stopped him.
“Don’t explain that.””
The room went quiet.
For once, Derek looked uncomfortable.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Uncomfortable.
Linda sat down slowly.
“You need to know why he was so desperate to keep this marriage.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She gave a humorless smile.
“Because Derek Mercer doesn’t have what everyone thinks he has.””
Derek’s expression changed.
“Mom.””
“No more protecting him.””
She looked at me.
“Your husband is drowning.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Linda folded her hands.
“Derek has been in debt for years.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Derek looked away.
And that was when I knew.
Because I had seen that look before.
The look of someone caught.
“You told me you had investments.””
“I did.””
“Good ones.””
“Some.””
I laughed softly.
“Some?””
He didn’t answer.
Linda continued.
“He spent money trying to look successful.””
I looked at Derek.
The expensive watches.
The luxury dinners.
The vacations he insisted we take even when I suggested saving.
The way he always needed people to believe he was winning.
“You were pretending.””
His face hardened.
“I was trying to build something.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to impress people.””
That hit him.
Because it was true.
Derek had always cared more about appearances than reality.
The perfect husband.
The perfect house.
The perfect family.
Even if everything underneath was falling apart.
Linda leaned forward.
“But that’s not the worst part.””
I looked at her.
“There’s more?””
She nodded.
“Six months ago, when Derek tried to refinance the house, it wasn’t because he wanted to expand anything.””
My eyes moved to Derek.
“Then why?””
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
But I needed to hear him say it.
“Derek.””
He swallowed.
“I needed money.””
“How much?””
Silence.
“How much?””
His voice was barely audible.
“Three hundred thousand dollars.””
The number landed like a stone.
I stared at him.
“For what?””
He didn’t respond.
Linda looked away.
And that told me there was something even worse.
“Derek.””
He finally spoke.
“It was a mistake.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I invested in something.””
“What?””
“A business opportunity.””
I waited.
He looked away.
“It failed.””
I closed my eyes.
Three hundred thousand dollars.
A secret debt.
A hidden financial disaster.
And he had tried to use our house to cover it.
The house I had spent years helping maintain.
The house I had protected.
The house he told everyone belonged to his family.
“You were going to lose everything.””
He looked at me.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to make me responsible for it.””
His silence answered.
Linda suddenly stood.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent either.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She walked closer.
“You benefited from Derek’s success.””
I stared at her.
“His success?””
She nodded.
“You lived in this house.””
I almost smiled.
“That I paid for.””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
Because she knew.
She knew the truth.
I continued.
“You never asked where the money came from, Linda.””
She said nothing.
“You only cared that Derek looked wealthy.””
Derek interrupted.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“Not this time.””
For years, I had swallowed my words.
Not anymore.
“You both loved the image of this family.””
I pointed around the house.
“The decorations.””
“The parties.””
“The expensive dinners.””
“But none of you cared about what was happening behind closed doors.””
Derek looked away.
Linda’s expression hardened.
“You think you’re better than us now?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I think I finally see you clearly.””
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Another message from James.
*The financial records have been reviewed. There is evidence Derek transferred marital funds without authorization.*
I froze.
Marital funds.
I looked at Derek.
“What did you do?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“You didn’t just borrow money.””
The silence returned.
“You used our accounts.””
Derek’s eyes moved away.
That was all I needed.
“How much?””
“Claire…”
“How much?””
He whispered.
“Eighty thousand.””
I felt something inside me go completely still.
Eighty thousand dollars.
Money from my business account.
Money I had saved.
Money I planned to use for our future.
“You stole from me.””
“No.””
His response came quickly.
“I was going to pay it back.””
I looked at him.
“That’s what everyone says before they get caught.””
Linda stepped forward.
“Claire, you have to understand—”
“No.””
I raised my hand.
“Stop making excuses for him.””
She froze.
Because I had never spoken to her that way.
Not once.
Derek stared at me.
“You really hate me now?””
The question surprised me.
Not because of what he asked.
Because he still thought this was about hate.
I shook my head.
“I don’t hate you.””
I looked at the man I had once loved.
“I’m disappointed.””
His expression changed.
“You were the one person I trusted.””
I swallowed.
“And you proved I was wrong.””
For a moment, Derek looked like he wanted to say something.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His entire face changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then another.
“What do you mean frozen?””
My eyes narrowed.
Derek turned away.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Linda looked nervous.
“Who is it?””
He ignored her.
“Listen, you need to understand—”
Another pause.
His hand tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean the accounts are under investigation?””
My heart stopped for a second.
Because I understood.
This was bigger than I thought.
James had started the process.
Derek hung up.
Slowly.
Then he looked at me.
“You did this.””
I didn’t answer.
“You destroyed everything.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I picked up my purse.
“You did.””
I walked toward the door again.
But before I could leave, Derek said something that made me stop.
Something that changed the direction of everything.
“You still don’t know why I married you.””
I turned around.
“What?””
Derek looked terrified.
Like he had said something he shouldn’t have.
Linda immediately whispered:
“Derek, don’t.””
But it was too late.
I stared at my husband.
“What did you just say?””
He looked at me.
May you like
And after years of lies, the truth finally started coming out.
“I didn’t marry you because of love.””
