Chapter 2: The Secret In The Trunk
When I returned to the house forty minutes later, I didn’t carry groceries.
I carried a folder.
And the moment Derek saw my empty hands, his face changed.
He was standing in the kitchen beside Linda, surrounded by empty serving trays and decorations.
For the first time all day, he looked uncertain.
“You’re back already?”” he asked.
I smiled.
“Yes.””
Linda looked behind me.
“Where are the groceries?””
I placed my purse on the counter.
“I didn’t get them.””
The silence was immediate.
Derek’s jaw tightened.
“What did you say?””
I looked at him calmly.
“I said I didn’t get groceries.””
Linda stared at me like I had suddenly started speaking another language.
“You were gone forty minutes.””
“I know.””
“And you came back with nothing?””
“Yes.””
Derek stepped closer.
The old version of me would have stepped back.
This time, I didn’t move.
“What exactly were you doing?””
I held his gaze.
“Preparing.””
Linda scoffed.
“Preparing? You haven’t even started cooking.””
I glanced at the clock.
11:58.
The first guests would arrive soon.
Perfect.
Derek lowered his voice.
“You think this is funny?””
“No.””
“Then explain yourself.””
I almost laughed.
Explain myself.
That was what Derek always wanted.
An explanation.
A defense.
A reason why I deserved basic respect.
But today, I wasn’t defending myself.
I was collecting theirs.
“I realized something,” I said.
Linda rolled her eyes.
“Here we go.””
I continued.
“For years, you both have told everyone I’m lucky to be part of this family.””
Derek frowned.
“Because you are.””
“And for years,” I said, “you reminded me this house belonged to the Mercers.””
Linda smiled.
“That’s right.””
I reached into my purse.
“And that’s why I brought this.””
I placed a document envelope on the counter.
Derek looked down.
“What is that?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, I watched his reaction.
The confidence.
The arrogance.
The belief that nothing could ever threaten him.
Then I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet.
Derek picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Slowly.
Then faster.
The color drained from his face.
“What is this?””
Linda grabbed the paper from him.
Her eyes scanned the document.
Then she froze.
“What did you do?””
I looked at her.
For the first time in years, Linda Mercer looked afraid.
“I protected myself.””
Derek slammed the paper onto the counter.
“You went behind my back?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became quieter.
“You went behind mine first.””
His expression changed.
Because he knew.
Six months earlier, he had tried to use the house as collateral without telling me.
He thought I wouldn’t notice.
He thought the paperwork was just another thing I would sign.
But I read everything.
Every line.
Every clause.
Every signature.
That was the difference between us.
He assumed I was careless.
I wasn’t.
A car horn sounded outside.
Guests were arriving.
Linda looked toward the window.
Her perfect birthday celebration was seconds away.
“You wouldn’t ruin today,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“You ruined today the moment you decided my pain was entertainment.””
Derek stepped forward.
“You’re my wife.””
I smiled sadly.
“I was.””
His face hardened.
“What does that mean?””
Before I could answer, the front door opened.
Linda’s friends walked in laughing.
“Happy birthday!””
“Linda! Sixty looks amazing on you!””
Everyone entered the room expecting cake, champagne, and a perfect family.
Instead, they found silence.
And a woman standing in the kitchen holding the truth.
Linda quickly forced a smile.
“Everything is fine.””
But nobody believed her.
Especially not after one of her friends noticed my hair scattered near the stove.
She looked at me.
Then at Derek.
“What happened here?””
Derek opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that was when my phone began ringing.
I looked at the screen.
One name appeared.
*James Whitmore.*
Everyone in the room watched me answer.
And before I could say hello, my attorney spoke loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Mrs. Mercer, I’m calling to confirm that the police report and the domestic abuse evidence have been officially filed.””
The room went completely silent.
Derek’s face turned pale.
Linda dropped her wine glass.
And for the first time, they both realized something terrifying.
