Chapter 6: The File That Exposed Everything

Rebecca Collins stood at my front door holding a folder like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Maybe it did.

Maybe it carried years of lies.

Years of secrets.

Years of people being hurt because one man wanted to look successful.

Derek looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Why are you here?””

Rebecca didn’t even look at him.

Her eyes stayed on me.

“I came because you deserve the truth.””

I glanced at the folder.

“What is inside?””

Rebecca took a slow breath.

“Everything.””

Behind me, Derek moved closer.

“Claire, don’t listen to her.””

I turned around.

The desperation in his voice was almost unbelievable.

This was the same man who had grabbed my hair that morning.

The same man who told me to cook sixty dishes or leave.

Now he was afraid.

Not because he hurt me.

Because someone else could reveal what he had done.

Rebecca noticed my expression.

“He always does that.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He changes when he loses control.””

Derek’s face hardened.

“Don’t pretend you know me.””

Rebecca laughed quietly.

“I knew you better than anyone.””

That sentence hurt.

Not because I was jealous.

Because it confirmed what I already felt.

I had spent seven years married to someone who had an entire life before me that he never shared.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Derek immediately reacted.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

He stopped.

Because he realized he no longer had the authority to tell me what to do.

Rebecca walked inside.

Linda stayed near the kitchen, watching nervously.

The birthday cake sat untouched on the counter.

The candles were still there.

Sixty candles.

A celebration that never happened.

A family image that collapsed in a single afternoon.

Rebecca placed the folder on the dining table.

“I didn’t want to come here like this.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you?””

“Because I found out what Derek was planning.””

My stomach tightened.

“What planning?””

She looked at Derek.

“You didn’t tell her?””

He said nothing.

Rebecca opened the folder.

“The day before Derek proposed to you, he met with a financial advisor.””

I looked at Derek.

His face changed.

“When?””

Rebecca pulled out a document.

“Seven years ago.””

She placed it in front of me.

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the page.

And then I saw my name.

Not written by me.

Not signed by me.

But listed in a financial plan.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Rebecca answered.

“A plan.””

I looked closer.

There were notes.

Numbers.

Assets.

Income estimates.

And at the top:

*Potential Marriage Strategy.*

My breathing stopped.

Derek stepped forward.

“Claire, that’s not what it looks like.””

I looked up.

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rebecca continued.

“He met with someone before your relationship became serious.””

My voice was quiet.

“He researched me.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Derek.

“You knew how much money I had.””

His silence answered.

Rebecca’s voice softened.

“He knew your company was growing. He knew your family had no debt. He knew you were independent.””

I stared at the papers.

Every compliment.

Every romantic gesture.

Every moment I thought was love.

Suddenly felt different.

“Did you ever actually like me?””

Derek looked hurt.

“Yes.””

The answer came quickly.

I looked at him.

“But?””

He swallowed.

“But I also knew you could help me.””

I closed my eyes.

That was the closest thing to honesty he had given me.

And somehow, it hurt more.

Rebecca looked down.

“I found these documents after we broke up.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her expression changed.

“Because I didn’t know you existed.””

A painful silence followed.

“What?””

She explained.

“Derek cut contact with me completely. I thought he was starting over.””

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know he had found someone else until I saw your wedding announcement.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“You knew before today?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I found your name recently when I was reviewing old legal files.””

“Why were you reviewing them?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Because Derek tried to contact me three months ago.””

My eyes moved to him.

“You contacted her?””

Derek looked away.

“I needed help.””

“Of course.””

My voice was bitter.

“When he needed money, he found another person.””

“That’s not fair.””

I stared at him.

“Fair?””

The word almost made me laugh.

“You have lied to me for seven years, and you want to talk about fair?””

Derek lowered his head.

Rebecca quietly closed the folder.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“More?””

She nodded.

“He wasn’t just trying to hide debt.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

Rebecca pulled out another document.

“This is a copy of a life insurance application.””

I frowned.

“Life insurance?””

She nodded.

“Your life insurance.””

The room became silent.

I stared at the paper.

Then at Derek.

“No.””

His face changed.

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You knew about this?””

He immediately answered.

“It wasn’t like that.””

Rebecca looked disgusted.

“Derek.””

He stopped.

I picked up the document.

My eyes scanned the page.

The policy amount.

The beneficiary.

His name.

My hands started trembling.

“How long?””

Derek looked away.

“How long did you know?””

“Claire…”

“How long?””

He whispered.

“Two years.””

The room spun for a second.

Two years.

For two years, he knew about a policy connected to my life.

And he never told me.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Rebecca did.

“Because he was trying to protect himself financially.””

Linda suddenly spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I turned toward her.

“Then tell me.””

Linda looked at Derek.

He looked terrified.

“Tell me.””

For once, Linda didn’t have a clever response.

She didn’t have an insult.

She didn’t have a speech about family.

She just looked tired.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed softly.

“That’s what you call this?””

She looked down.

“I wanted Derek to succeed.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted Derek to appear successful.””

Linda didn’t deny it.

Rebecca gathered the papers.

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She glanced at Derek.

“This morning, before you left the house, Derek made a call.””

My eyes moved to him.

“What call?””

Derek said nothing.

Rebecca answered.

“He called someone and told them you were about to lose everything.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

She pulled out her phone.

“I recorded the conversation.””

Derek’s face changed instantly.

“You recorded me?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“No.””

She smiled sadly.

“You recorded yourself.””

She pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

Derek’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“Once Claire signs the final papers, the money problem disappears.””

My heart stopped.

Then his voice continued.

“She trusts me. She always has.””

I closed my eyes.

Because hearing it was different.

Reading documents was different.

But hearing his confidence.

Hearing him talk about my trust like it was a weakness.

That was something else.

The recording continued.

“I just need to keep her calm until everything is transferred.””

The room went silent.

The phone stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Derek.

The man I married.

The man I defended.

The man I believed would protect me.

He had never been protecting me.

He had been managing me.

Derek took one step forward.

“Claire, please.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I didn’t see my husband.

I saw a stranger.

A stranger who had worn his face for seven years.

My phone buzzed.

Another message appeared.

This time from James.

*Emergency hearing scheduled. The judge approved immediate review of all marital assets. Also, one more person has contacted us with information about Derek.*

I looked at the message.

One more person.

I slowly raised my eyes.

“Who else knows about this?””

Rebecca looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

Then my front door opened.

Nobody had knocked.

Nobody had announced themselves.

A man stood outside holding a briefcase.

He looked directly at Derek.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

His expression was serious.

“But you need to know the truth before Derek has another chance to rewrite the story.””

He opened the briefcase.

And pulled out a file.

A file with Derek’s signature on every page.

“This is the divorce agreement he prepared seven years ago.””

May you like

My heart stopped.

“Before we even got married.””
