Chapter 9: The Plan That Started Before Our Wedding
The room went silent after Daniel spoke.
“That’s my father’s handwriting.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody needed to.
Those words changed everything.
The notebook in the officer’s hand was no longer just evidence against Rachel.
It was proof that the secret reached much deeper.
Years deeper.
I looked at Daniel.
“You’re sure?””
He nodded slowly.
“I know my father’s handwriting.””
The officer glanced between us.
“Are you saying Robert Hawthorne wrote this?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I’m saying that looks exactly like his writing.””
Marcus took a step forward.
“Open it.””
The officer hesitated.
“It’s evidence.””
“We need to know what’s inside.””
The officer looked at me.
Then nodded.
He carefully opened the notebook.
The pages were filled with dates.
Names.
Notes.
Plans.
The first page had one sentence written at the top.
*The Hawthorne legacy must remain protected.*
I felt sick.
Marcus turned the page.
The next entries were dates.
Our first meeting.
Our engagement.
Our wedding.
My pregnancy announcement.
Everything.
My entire relationship with Daniel was written down like a business project.
Like I was not a person.
Like I was a decision.
I looked at Daniel.
“Your family was watching us.””
His face was pale.
“I didn’t know.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“But somehow everyone knew except me.””
Daniel looked down.
He had no answer.
The officer flipped through more pages.
Then stopped.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at a section near the back.
“This is different.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
The officer read quietly.
Then his expression changed.
“It mentions the pregnancy.””
My heart tightened.
“Read it.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
He turned the notebook toward us.
The handwriting was smaller here.
More rushed.
*If Emma becomes pregnant, immediate action must be taken before the child can be protected by outside parties.*
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked like he might be sick.
Marcus continued reading.
“Next line.””
The officer hesitated.
*The child must remain within Hawthorne control. If necessary, question Emma’s loyalty before birth.*
I closed my eyes.
Question my loyalty.
That was what this had been.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not a family argument.
A strategy.
They needed a reason to separate me from my child.
And they created one.
Ethan whispered:
“They planned this.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did your father hate me?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because my father never saw people as people.””
The words were quiet.
But they explained everything.
The money.
The agreement.
The obsession with family name.
The control.
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“He always believed everything had a purpose.””
I looked at him.
“Even marriage?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
More than I expected.
Because part of me had still been holding onto something.
A memory.
The first time Daniel held my hand.
The night he proposed.
The day we found out we were having a baby.
I wanted those moments to be real.
But now I wondered how much of my life had been chosen for me.
The officer turned another page.
Then suddenly stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“There’s a name here.””
“Whose?””
He showed us.
My heart stopped.
*Rachel Hawthorne.*
Below her name was a date.
The date was two years before I met Daniel.
Marcus frowned.
“Why would Rachel be involved before the marriage?””
Daniel looked confused.
“She was.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I thought she only became suspicious after the pregnancy.””
The officer continued reading.
“The notes suggest Rachel was assigned to maintain contact.””
I stared.
“Maintain contact?””
“With Emma.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
Marcus took the notebook.
He read the sentence himself.
Then his face changed.
“Rachel was supposed to become your friend.””
The room went quiet.
My stomach turned.
“No.””
I remembered.
The first time Rachel and I met.
How welcoming she had been.
How quickly she opened up.
How she told me she always wanted a sister.
How she invited me into her family.
All those moments replayed differently.
Was any of it real?
I whispered:
“She was watching me.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The betrayal felt endless.
Then Daniel said something unexpected.
“She didn’t start this.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel stared at the notebook.
“My father did.””
Marcus nodded.
“That seems likely.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He pointed to the notebook.
“Rachel followed instructions.””
I looked at him.
“You’re defending her?””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I’m saying she was also controlled.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel continued.
“My father controlled all of us.””
I almost interrupted.
But then I stopped.
Because I remembered something.
Evelyn’s fear.
Rachel’s silence.
Daniel’s hesitation.
They were not innocent.
But they were not free either.
And that was the most complicated truth of all.
The officer closed the notebook.
“We need to speak with Rachel again.””
Marcus nodded.
“She won’t tell the truth.””
“Maybe.””
The officer looked at me.
“But this changes the investigation.””
After he left, Daniel remained standing near the door.
I didn’t know what to say to him.
I didn’t know if there was anything left to say.
Finally, he whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
The words were simple.
But they arrived too late.
“You were willing to let me die.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You looked at me and believed I was capable of betraying you.””
“I know.””
“You picked them.””
His voice broke.
“I know.””
For once, Daniel didn’t try to explain.
Maybe because there was no explanation.
Maybe because he finally understood that some damage could not be repaired with words.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me,” he said.
I looked away.
“Good.””
He nodded.
“I deserve that.””
The honesty surprised me.
But it didn’t erase anything.
After Daniel left, Marcus stayed.
The room was quiet.
“You hate him.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s honest.””
I looked at the window.
“I loved him.””
Marcus nodded.
“And now?””
I touched my stomach.
“Now I love my child.””
He understood.
Because that was the one thing nobody could take from me.
Not Daniel.
Not Evelyn.
Not Rachel.
Not Robert.
My baby.
The next morning, the police returned with another update.
This time, they had found Rachel.
She agreed to speak.
But only to me.
I stared at the officer.
“Why?””
“She said she wants you to hear the truth from her.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“It’s a trap.””
Maybe it was.
Maybe everything was.
But I was tired of secrets.
I was tired of people deciding what I could handle.
“I’ll talk to her.””
Marcus looked concerned.
“Emma.””
“I need answers.””
The meeting took place in a private room at the station.
Rachel entered alone.
No makeup.
No perfect smile.
No carefully prepared appearance.
For the first time, she looked exactly like what she was.
Someone who had lost control.
She sat across from me.
Neither of us spoke for a long time.
Finally, she whispered:
“I know you hate me.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t even know what to feel.””
That seemed to hurt her more.
“I’m sorry.””
The word sounded familiar.
The same word she whispered in the field.
But this time, I didn’t accept it.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because I was jealous.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Not of you.””
“Then what?””
“Of the fact that you got to choose.””
I stared at her.
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“My whole life, my father chose everything.””
Her voice shook.
“My clothes. My friends. My future.””
“That doesn’t excuse what you did.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
“Because when my father found out about your pregnancy, he told me the plan had to begin.””
My heart tightened.
“What plan?””
Rachel looked terrified.
“The plan to separate you from the baby.””
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because the child wasn’t just an heir.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at the door.
Then back at me.
“Because your baby carries something your mother hid from my father.””
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“The real inheritance.””
I leaned forward.
“What inheritance?””
Rachel’s face turned pale.
“The one Robert Hawthorne killed to get.””
I stopped breathing.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel whispered the words that finally revealed why my family had been targeted for decades.
“Emma…”
“Your mother didn’t run away from the Hawthornes because she was afraid of losing money.””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“She ran because she discovered your father and Robert Hawthorne had stolen something far more dangerous than money.””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Your father left you proof.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
Rachel looked at me.
May you like
And answered:
“Inside the one place Robert Hawthorne never thought to search.””
