Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried With Me
Evelyn stepped out from the shadows slowly.
She was not rushing.
She was not panicking.
That was the first thing I noticed.
A normal person who discovered someone had been left buried in the ground would run toward them. They would call for help. They would scream.
Evelyn walked like she had expected to find me exactly where I was.
Like this was part of a plan.
The moonlight reflected off the object in her hand.
At first, I couldn’t tell what it was.
Then she lifted it slightly.
A flashlight.
Not a weapon.
But somehow, that made it worse.
Because it meant she came prepared.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom, what are you doing here?””
Her eyes moved past him and landed on me.
She didn’t look shocked.
She didn’t look sorry.
She looked annoyed.
“I knew you wouldn’t be able to finish this.””
My stomach turned.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Mom.””
“No,” she snapped.
“Don’t start acting like you’re innocent now.””
The words hung in the air.
Even Daniel seemed surprised.
I pressed the phone closer to my chest.
Marcus was still listening.
I needed him to hear everything.
Every word.
Every lie.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Give me your phone.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
She pointed toward me.
“Her phone.””
My heart stopped.
She knew.
She knew I had it.
Daniel looked at me.
Then at his mother.
“You called someone?””
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
His expression told me he already understood.
“Emma,” he whispered.
For the first time that night, he sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not accusing.
Afraid.
Evelyn noticed too.
Her face hardened.
“You see?”” she said to Daniel.
“This is exactly what I warned you about.””
“What?””
“She’s manipulating you.””
I stared at her.
“Manipulating him?””
My voice shook, but I forced the words out.
“You buried me.””
Evelyn tilted her head.
“You’re still refusing to admit what you did.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“I’m pregnant.””
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
“My medical records do.””
She smiled faintly.
“That’s what you think.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Daniel.
And that was when I realized something.
This was never just about a rumor.
There was something else.
Something they were hiding.
“Daniel,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Ask your mother what she knows.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“Ask her why she was so sure.””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t listen to her.””
“No,” I said.
“Ask.””
Daniel looked between us.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then he said quietly:
“Mom.””
She didn’t respond.
“Mom, why were you so sure the baby wasn’t mine?””
Her jaw tightened.
“That’s not important.””
“It is to me.””
“No, Daniel. What’s important is protecting this family.””
I almost laughed.
Protecting.
That word had become meaningless.
Daniel took a step toward her.
“Answer me.””
Evelyn stared at him.
Then she sighed.
“You were always too soft.””
The sentence hurt him.
I could see it.
She wasn’t talking to her son like someone she loved.
She was talking to someone she controlled.
“You wanted to believe everyone was good,” she continued.
“That’s why you never noticed what was happening.””
“What was happening?””
She looked at me.
“She was hiding things.””
I shook my head.
“Lies.””
“Then why did you delete messages?””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“What is she talking about?””
“I didn’t delete anything.””
Evelyn smiled.
“There. See how quickly she denies it?””
I looked at Daniel.
“Do you believe her?””
He didn’t answer.
And that hurt.
Because even now, after seeing me trapped in the dirt, he still hesitated.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“Look at me.””
He did.
“I have spent months proving I love you.””
My voice broke.
“I carried your child. I built a life with you. And tonight you buried me because your mother showed you something you never even questioned.””
Daniel looked away.
The silence was painful.
Then Marcus spoke through the phone.
Loud enough that everyone heard.
“Daniel.””
Every face turned.
Daniel froze.
His eyes dropped to the phone in my hand.
“Who is that?””
I looked directly at him.
“Someone who believes me.””
Evelyn’s expression changed instantly.
“Give me that phone.””
She moved toward me.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“Mom, wait.””
“No.””
“She could have called anyone.””
“She called him.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who?””
Evelyn’s eyes locked onto the phone.
Then she said a name.
“Marcus.””
The air changed.
Daniel stared at her.
“How do you know?””
She didn’t answer.
And that was the second moment that night when I knew the truth was much bigger than a false accusation.
“Why do you know Marcus was the one she called?”” Daniel asked.
Evelyn remained silent.
“Mom.””
Her face hardened.
“Because he’s involved.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She pointed at me.
“He’s been helping her.””
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, Mom.””
His voice was different now.
Not because he believed me.
Because he was finally realizing there were missing pieces.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked away.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus spoke again.
“Daniel, ask your mother about the hospital.””
Evelyn went completely still.
I noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
“What hospital?””
No answer.
“Mom.””
Her hands tightened around the flashlight.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Dig into things you don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at her.
“What happened at the hospital?””
Evelyn’s face became colder.
“This conversation is over.””
She turned away.
But Daniel grabbed her arm.
“No.””
It was the first time all night he had stood against her.
“No, you don’t get to do that.””
She stared at him.
“You’re choosing her?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the dirt around my body.
His face collapsed.
“I’m trying to understand what I did.””
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn said something so quietly that I almost missed it.
“You did what was necessary.””
Daniel released her arm.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“You protected your child.””
My stomach dropped.
Daniel looked horrified.
“You told me the baby wasn’t mine.””
“I told you there was a possibility.””
“A possibility?””
His voice rose.
“You made me believe she betrayed me.””
“I showed you the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
And that silence was the loudest confession.
I felt something shift inside me.
Because now Daniel was finally asking the questions I had begged him to ask hours ago.
Questions that should have come before the shovel.
Before the dirt.
Before he left me alone.
A siren sounded faintly in the distance.
My heart jumped.
Marcus had called for help.
Evelyn heard it too.
Her face changed.
Panic.
Real panic.
She looked at Daniel.
“Where did you tell her you were taking her?””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“When you left the house.””
“I didn’t tell anyone.””
Her eyes widened.
Then she looked toward the road.
“You need to get rid of that phone.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Mom.””
“Now.””
And that was when I realized something.
Evelyn was not afraid of being caught for what she did to me.
She was afraid of what that phone would reveal.
Because she knew the phone contained something.
Something she had spent all night trying to hide.
The sirens grew louder.
Daniel looked at me.
For the first time, he looked truly broken.
“Emma…”
I said nothing.
I couldn’t.
Because I was watching his mother.
Watching the woman who had destroyed my life suddenly realize she was losing control.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
And before she could silence it, I saw the name appear on the screen.
A name that made Daniel step backward.
Because it was someone from his own past.
Someone who knew exactly what Evelyn had done.
Someone who had been silent for years.
The screen flashed once more.

And Daniel whispered:
“Dad’s attorney?””
