Chapter 7: The Man They Used as a Weapon
The room went completely silent after Ethan’s confession.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at him, waiting for him to take back his words.
Waiting for him to say I misunderstood.
But he didn’t.
He just stood there with the expression of someone who knew the truth would hurt before it helped.
“Say that again,” I whispered.
Ethan looked down.
“Rachel asked me to help her make it look like your baby belonged to me.””
My fingers curled around the blanket.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You do.””
Ethan swallowed.
“I know what she wanted.””
“What?””
“To destroy your marriage.””
The words felt too simple.
Too small.
For something that almost killed me.
Marcus took the document from the table and looked through it.
“When did she contact you?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Six weeks ago.””
My heart dropped.
Six weeks.
That meant while I was buying baby clothes.
While I was painting the nursery.
While I was telling Daniel about names.
Rachel was building a lie.
“She contacted me through social media first,” Ethan continued.
“She said she needed information.””
“What information?””
“About you.””
I looked away.
Of course.
Everyone wanted information about me.
Nobody wanted the truth from me.
“She asked about your relationship with me,” Ethan said.
“I haven’t spoken to you in years.””
“I told her that.””
“What did she say?””
Ethan gave a bitter laugh.
“She said that wasn’t the answer she needed.””
Marcus looked up.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she already believed there was something between us.””
I closed my eyes.
The accusation had never been about evidence.
It had been about finding someone who fit the story.
Someone they could blame.
“Did you help her?””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Yes.””
My eyes opened.
The answer hurt.
Even though I barely knew him anymore.
“Yes,” he repeated.
“But not the way she wanted.””
“Explain.””
He sat down.
“She offered me money.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“How much?””
“Twenty thousand dollars.””
I felt sick.
“She tried to pay you to lie?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you go to the police?””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Because I almost accepted.””
That surprised me.
He continued before I could respond.
“I was struggling. My business had failed. I was behind on everything. When she offered the money, I thought about it.””
The honesty was uncomfortable.
But it was better than another lie.
“What changed?””
Ethan looked at me.
“She sent me a picture.””
My body went still.
“What picture?””
“A picture of you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of picture?””
“You at your doctor’s appointment.””
The room became cold.
“How did she get that?””
Ethan looked at Marcus.
Neither of them answered.
And that silence told me enough.
Someone inside the system had helped her.
Someone had accessed private information.
“She told me you were lying to Daniel,” Ethan said.
“She showed me documents.””
“The fake paternity test?””
He nodded.
“She said Daniel was going to divorce you and that I could help prove what happened.””
I looked at him.
“And you believed her?””
“For a moment.””
The words hurt.
Because that was the theme of my entire nightmare.
Everyone had a moment where they could have stopped.
And everyone chose not to.
“What happened next?””
Ethan looked down.
“I started investigating.””
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because Rachel made one mistake.””
“What?””
“She underestimated how much I remembered.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She told me you and I had a secret relationship.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“But I remembered something important.””
“What?””
“You were never interested in me.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was true.
“Rachel didn’t know you,” Ethan said.
“She only knew the version of you she needed.””
Marcus looked at the document again.
“This agreement is real.””
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Because Rachel showed it to me.””
My heart stopped.
“She had this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ethan’s expression became serious.
“She wanted me to understand why this mattered.””
“What did she say?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“She said your child could change everything.””
The words from Marcus’s folder came back.
*If the Hawthorne family ever discovers the child, they will try to take control.*
My hand moved to my stomach.
“Change what?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Finally, Marcus said:
“The inheritance.””
I looked at him.
“What inheritance?””
He opened the agreement again.
“There’s a clause here.””
He pointed at the page.
“A child born from both families would have legal rights connected to assets controlled by the Hawthornes.””
I stared at the paper.
“So this was about money?””
“It started with money,” Marcus said.
“Started?””
He looked at me.
“I think it became about power.””
The room felt heavier.
Daniel’s family didn’t just want to know if the baby was his.
They wanted to know what the baby represented.
A connection.
A claim.
A threat.
Ethan leaned forward.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Rachel wasn’t working alone.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Ethan looked at him.
“She told me she had help.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You must know something.””
Ethan shook his head.
“She never gave names.””
“What did she say?””
He looked at me.
“She said someone inside the family had been waiting years for this.””
A chill moved through me.
“Waiting for what?””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“For the child.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
The police had returned it.
A notification appeared.
Unknown number.
Another message.
My entire body went tense.
Marcus noticed.
“Emma?””
I showed him the screen.
Three words.
*Ask your mother.*
My breathing stopped.
My mother.
I hadn’t thought about her in years.
Not because I didn’t love her.
Because she had died when I was young.
There was nothing to ask.
Or so I thought.
A second message appeared.
*She knew the Hawthornes before you did.*
I stared at the screen.
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Emma.””
“My mother never mentioned them.””
“Maybe she couldn’t.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, Ethan spoke.
“Rachel said something else.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
“She said the reason she chose you…”
He stopped.
“Say it.””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“The reason she chose you as Daniel’s wife was because of your mother.””
My heart started pounding.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My mother had nothing to do with them.””
Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
Not a document.
Not a contract.
A photograph.
He placed it on the bed.
I looked down.
And everything inside me stopped.
It was my mother.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside someone I recognized immediately.
Robert Hawthorne.
Daniel’s father.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
Because standing beside them was another person.
A woman I had never met.
A woman holding a baby.
My baby picture.
On the back of the photograph, written in faded ink, were six words.
*The promise must be kept.*
I looked at Marcus.
Then Ethan.
“What promise?””
Neither answered.
Because at that exact moment, the hospital room door opened.
Daniel stood there.
His face was pale.
His eyes were fixed on the photograph.
And the first words out of his mouth were:
“Where did you get that picture?””
Nobody moved.
Daniel stepped inside slowly.
“I know that photo.””
My heart raced.
“You do?””
He looked at the picture again.
Then at me.
“My father had a copy.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Why?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with something I couldn’t identify.
Fear.
Regret.
Recognition.
“Because that picture is the reason my family was never supposed to find out who you really are.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then Ethan.
Then back at me.
And whispered:
“Emma… your mother wasn’t just connected to my family.””
May you like
He took a shaky breath.
“She was part of the reason they were afraid of you.””
