Chapter 2: The Call That Exposed the Lie
The name glowing on my phone screen made my entire body go still.
For a moment, I forgot about the dirt.
I forgot about the pain.
I forgot about the fear.
Because I knew that name.
*Dr. Marcus Hale.*
My husband’s older brother.
The one person Daniel’s family had spent years avoiding.
The one person they refused to invite to family gatherings.
The one person they called “a disgrace” because he had walked away from their control and built a life of his own.
And now, somehow, he was calling me.
My fingers trembled as I reached again.
The phone was still barely within reach.
The screen dimmed.
“No,” I whispered.
My heart began pounding.
“Please… no.””
I moved my shoulder as much as I could, ignoring the pain shooting through my body.
The dirt shifted slightly.
That gave me hope.
I pushed harder.
My forehead burned.
My breathing became uneven.
But I kept going.
Because I knew if that phone disappeared into the grass or the battery died, I might not get another chance.
My fingertip touched the corner.
I stretched.
The phone moved.
Just a little.
Again.
I stretched farther.
And finally, my fingers wrapped around it.
I pulled it toward me.
The sound of the phone scraping across the dirt was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
I grabbed it with shaking hands.
The battery was almost dead.
Three percent.
The call had ended.
But the number was still there.
I stared at it.
Why had Marcus called me?
Why tonight?
Why after all this happened?
I pressed the call button before I could think twice.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then—
“Hello?””
His voice nearly broke me.
Not because it was familiar.
Because it was the first voice I heard that sounded like a human being.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
There was silence.
Then his voice changed.
“Emma?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
I tried to answer.
But suddenly I couldn’t.
The reality of what had happened crashed over me.
I was buried.
I was trapped.
My husband had done this.
His family had watched.
And I was talking to the only person who might believe me.
“I need help,” I said.
The words came out smaller than I expected.
“Emma, listen to me. Are you hurt?””
“Yes.””
“Can you move?””
“No.””
Another silence.
A dangerous one.
“Emma,” Marcus said slowly.
“Tell me exactly where you are.””
I looked around.
The darkness made everything look unfamiliar.
I could see the outline of the old barn in the distance.
The tall trees behind the property.
The broken fence near the road.
“I’m behind Daniel’s parents’ house,” I said.
“Near the field.””
His breathing changed.
“Are you alone?””
“Yes.””
“Are you saying Daniel left you there?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
I heard something in his voice.
Not disbelief.
Not doubt.
Anger.
But controlled anger.
“Emma, I need you to stay calm. I’m calling emergency services now.””
“No.””
The word came out quickly.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel’s family knows people here.””
Marcus went quiet.
I knew what he was thinking.
I knew it sounded impossible.
But after everything that happened, I could not take another risk.
“I don’t know who they can reach,” I whispered.
“I don’t know who will believe me.””
“Emma.””
His voice softened.
“You called me. That means you already know someone will.””
My eyes filled with tears.
For the first time that night, I let myself believe I might survive.
“Why did you call me?”” I asked.
There was a pause.
A long one.
“Because I received something today.””
“What?””
“A message from Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“What message?””
Marcus exhaled.
“He asked me if I knew anything about your pregnancy.””
The cold returned.
“What?””
“He said he needed answers.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“It doesn’t.””
“Why would he ask you?””
“Because I’m a doctor.””
The answer confused me.
“Daniel knows I’m seeing my doctor.””
“This wasn’t about your regular appointments.””
His voice became quieter.
“He asked if there was any way a pregnancy test could be wrong.””
My heart sank.
“He thought the baby wasn’t his?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything suddenly connected.
The accusations.
The questions.
The way Daniel had looked at me.
His family hadn’t just believed a rumor.
They had been building a case against me.
“How long?”” I whispered.
“What?””
“How long has he believed this?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence told me more than words could.
“Marcus.””
“I don’t know everything,” he finally said.
“But I know Daniel contacted me three days ago.””
Three days.
I felt something inside me crack.
Three days.
For three days, my husband had looked at me while carrying this suspicion.
For three days, he had eaten dinner with me.
Touched my stomach.
Told me everything would be okay.
And all that time, he was listening to people who wanted to destroy me.
“Emma,” Marcus said, interrupting my thoughts.
“I need you to focus.””
“I’m sorry.””
“Don’t apologize. Stay with me.””
I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me.
Then I heard something.
A sound.
A branch breaking.
My entire body froze.
“Marcus.””
“What?””
“I heard something.””
“Where?””
“Behind me.””
My heart raced.
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
“Emma, listen carefully. Don’t call out. Don’t move unless you have to.””
The sound came again.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone was walking through the grass.
I stopped breathing.
“They’re here,” I whispered.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
The footsteps got closer.
I looked toward the darkness.
A shadow moved between the trees.
I held the phone against my chest.
“Emma,” Marcus said.
“Stay on the line.””
I wanted to answer.
But I couldn’t.
The figure stepped closer.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Emma?””
My blood ran cold.
I knew that voice.
It was Daniel.
For a moment, I felt relief.
Then I remembered.
He was the reason I was there.
“Emma,” Daniel called again.
“Are you awake?””
I stared at him.
The phone was still connected.
Marcus could hear everything.
Daniel stepped into the moonlight.
His face looked different.
Not angry.
Not guilty.
Worried.
That almost made me hate him more.
Because where was this worry when I begged him not to leave?
“Emma,” he said softly.
“I know you’re there.””
I stayed silent.
“Please answer me.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
Marcus whispered through the speaker.
“Do not respond.””
Daniel looked around.
Then his eyes landed on me.
For a second, he looked shocked.
Then something changed.
His expression became careful.
Like he was choosing his next words.
“I came back because I was worried.””
I almost laughed.
Worried.
The word felt impossible.
“You left me here,” I finally said.
Daniel flinched.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
His jaw tightened.
“Emma, listen to me. We need to talk.””
“You buried me in the ground and now you want to talk?””
His face went pale.
“Keep your voice down.””
I stared at him.
Not because of what he said.
Because of what he didn’t say.
He didn’t apologize.
He didn’t say he was sorry.
He only cared that someone might hear.
“Why are you afraid?”” I asked.
Daniel looked away.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“Why are you afraid someone will hear me?””
He stepped closer.
“I’m trying to fix this.””
“Fix this?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
Marcus was still listening.
And Daniel didn’t know.
Not yet.
Daniel crouched near the dirt.
“I know you think I’m the enemy.””
I looked at him.
“You are.””
His face tightened.
“I never wanted this.””
“But you allowed it.””
That hit him.
I saw it.
For the first time, I saw guilt.
Real guilt.
But guilt was not the same as innocence.
“You need to trust me,” he whispered.
I looked at the phone in my hand.
At the person on the other end who was hearing everything.
Then I looked back at my husband.
“The man I trusted is the reason I’m buried right now.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, another sound came from behind him.
A car door closing.
His face changed instantly.
Fear.
Real fear.
He turned toward the road.
And I realized something.
Daniel was not alone.
Someone else was coming.
Someone he was afraid of.
Marcus heard it too.
“Emma,” he whispered through the phone.
“Who is with him?””
I watched as Daniel slowly stood.
Then a second figure appeared near the trees.
A figure carrying something in their hand.
Daniel looked at the person.
May you like
And said the words that made my entire body go cold.
“Mom… why are you here?””
