Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

The message stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.

I read it again.

Then again.

*You found out too late.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

The second line was worse.

*Ask Marcus why he really came back.*

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something closer to disappointment.

Because after everything I had endured, a small part of me had started believing there was finally someone on my side.

Marcus had been the voice in the darkness.

The person who told me to stay calm.

The person who called for help.

The person who gave me the evidence.

But now someone wanted me to doubt him.

And the worst part was…

It was working.

Marcus noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I looked up.

He was standing beside the hospital bed, holding a cup of coffee he hadn’t touched.

For the first time since he arrived, I studied him differently.

Not as Daniel’s brother.

Not as my rescuer.

As a person.

“Who sent this?””

He looked at the phone.

His face changed slightly.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You know something,” I said.

Marcus slowly put the coffee down.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice became firmer.

“Don’t tell me to calm down. Everyone keeps telling me to calm down while they hide things from me.””

He looked away.

That hurt.

Because I recognized that look.

The same look Daniel had given me.

The look people made when they knew something they didn’t want to say.

“Marcus.””

He took a breath.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to find out this way.””

My chest tightened.

“Find out what?””

He sat down.

“I didn’t call you last night because I randomly became suspicious.””

I waited.

“Three days ago, Daniel contacted me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You know he asked about the pregnancy.””

“Yes.””

“But you don’t know why he contacted me.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

Marcus looked down at his hands.

“Daniel didn’t contact me because he thought you cheated.””

“Then why?””

“Because he was scared.””

“Of what?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because he believed someone was trying to destroy his family.””

The words confused me.

“Someone?””

Marcus nodded.

“Someone had been sending him messages.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of messages?””

“Pictures. Documents. Claims.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

I felt anger rise.

“So he believed everything someone sent him?””

Marcus didn’t defend him.

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“He didn’t believe everything at first.””

“Then what changed?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“Rachel.””

The room became quiet.

Again.

Always Rachel.

The sister who watched.

The sister who stayed silent.

The sister who seemed innocent because she never raised her voice.

“What did she do?””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Rachel contacted me two weeks ago.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She asked me to run a test.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

“I refused.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His silence answered before he did.

“Because I thought it would disappear.””

I stared at him.

“Disappear?””

“I thought Daniel would eventually realize the truth.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You thought a lie that big would disappear?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I was wrong.””

The room felt heavy.

I turned toward the window.

The city outside was waking up.

People were driving to work.

Buying coffee.

Living normal lives.

While my entire world had collapsed overnight.

“Why did Rachel ask you?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Because she wanted to know if a paternity test could be changed.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She asked if someone could manipulate results.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

Marcus looked at me.

And I knew.

He knew more.

“You’re protecting someone.””

“No.””

“You are.””

His jaw tightened.

“Emma, this family is more complicated than you think.””

I looked at him.

“My husband buried me.””

The words came out quietly.

“My mother-in-law watched.””

“Emma—”

“My father-in-law took my phone.””

I pointed at him.

“And now you’re telling me it’s complicated?””

Marcus went silent.

Because he knew there was no answer.

A nurse entered the room to check on me.

The interruption gave both of us time to breathe.

After she left, Marcus finally spoke.

“Daniel and I were never close.””

I looked at him.

“He told everyone we were.””

“He was wrong.””

Marcus gave a small, bitter smile.

“Our family looks perfect from the outside.””

He looked at the door.

“But inside, everything has always been about control.””

“What happened?””

He leaned back.

“When I was younger, I found out my father was hiding money.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with this?””

“Everything.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“My father built his reputation on being honest. Respected. Successful.””

“And?””

“And he wasn’t.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did he do?””

“Enough that people could have lost everything.””

I thought about Evelyn’s reaction when she saw the sirens.

The panic.

The fear.

The way she looked at that phone.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“Your pregnancy.””

I waited.

“Your baby.””

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

“What about my baby?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Daniel’s family needed an heir.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

“They always talked about it.””

“About having a child?””

“About having a child who would continue the family name.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

Marcus looked away.

“Because there’s another part.””

“What?””

He took a long breath.

“Emma, before you married Daniel, did anyone ever contact you about your family history?””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Did anyone ever ask about your parents?””

My heart began beating faster.

“Why are you asking me that?””

“Because Rachel wasn’t interested in proving you cheated.””

I looked at him.

“She was interested in proving something else.””

“What?””

Marcus reached into his bag.

He pulled out a folder.

Not the same folder from before.

A thicker one.

He placed it on the bed.

“I found this in my office this morning.””

I looked at the label.

My name was written on it.

But not my married name.

My maiden name.

My hands became cold.

“Where did you get this?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

“I found it in a storage box that belonged to my father.””

I stared at the folder.

“Why would your father have information about me?””

His expression changed.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Because Emma…”

He paused.

“Your father and Daniel’s father knew each other.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“So how could he?””

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Old photographs.

Old records.

And one picture.

A picture of two men standing outside a building.

One was Daniel’s father.

The other was my father.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Because I had spent my entire life believing my family had nothing to do with the Hawthornes.

That my marriage connected two strangers.

But we weren’t strangers.

We had been connected long before Daniel and I met.

Marcus turned the page.

And there was another document.

A handwritten note.

The ink was faded.

But the words were clear.

*If the Hawthorne family ever discovers the child, they will try to take control.*

My breathing stopped.

“Child?”” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

“I think this was written before you were born.””

I stared at the sentence.

Then another thought entered my mind.

A terrifying thought.

“Marcus.””

“Yes?””

“Why did Rachel order a fake paternity test?””

He didn’t answer.

“Why did your family want to know about my baby?””

Still nothing.

I looked at the folder.

At the warning.

At the evidence connecting our families.

Then I understood.

The accusation that I cheated…

The buried test…

The lies…

They were never really about Daniel.

They were about my child.

A knock came at the hospital room door.

Neither of us moved.

The door opened slowly.

A police officer stepped inside.

“Mrs. Hawthorne?””

“Yes?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“We need to ask you some questions.””

“About what?””

He glanced at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“About the person who just came forward claiming they have evidence that you planned this entire situation.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

The officer looked at the paper in his hand.

May you like

Then said the name.

“Rachel Hawthorne.””
