Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Beneath Eight Years of Lies

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

My father.

Victor Vale.

Standing together.

Shaking hands.

The date written on the back burned into my mind.

The day my father supposedly died.

The day my entire world changed.

The day I became an orphan.

But according to this picture…

My father wasn’t running from Victor Vale.

He was meeting him.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Doubt.

The one thing I never thought I would feel about my father.

“Impossible.””

The word left my mouth like a whisper.

Lucian stood beside me.

Silent.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Lucian Moretti always had an answer.

A strategy.

A plan.

But now he looked at the photograph like it had destroyed something he believed too.

“Where did this come from?”” he asked.

Daniel looked toward the empty hallway where the attacker had disappeared.

“I don’t know.””

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was tired.

“But it’s the truth.””

Adrian laughed softly from across the room.

Everyone turned.

He was still standing near the entrance, surrounded by his men.

But something had changed.

The confidence was gone.

He looked almost relieved.

Like this was the moment he had been waiting for.

“You finally understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His expression became bitter.

“Your father wasn’t the innocent man you think he was.””

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“You don’t get to talk about him.””

“Why?””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Because I’m the villain?””

He smiled.

“Because that makes everything easier for you?””

I hated that part of me listened.

Because he wasn’t wrong about one thing.

The world had been easier when the story was simple.

My father was good.

The Vales were bad.

Lucian was the mysterious protector.

Adrian was the betrayer.

But now every piece had changed.

And I was standing in the middle of a puzzle where everyone had lied.

“Tell me the truth.””

My voice surprised everyone.

I looked at Adrian.

“No games. No manipulation.””

A pause.

“What happened eight years ago?””

Adrian studied me.

Then he looked at Lucian.

“He never told you?””

Lucian’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Adrian ignored him.

“That night changed everything.””

He stepped closer.

“My father discovered your father had been investigating him.””

I looked at the photograph.

“But they were together.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian smiled without humor.

“Because your father wasn’t trying to destroy him.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“What?””

“He was trying to join him.””

The room went silent.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Adrian shrugged.

“You asked for the truth.””

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

His eyes moved to Lucian.

“Ask him.””

I looked at Lucian.

The silence returned.

The same silence that had followed every secret.

“Lucian.””

His jaw tightened.

“Elena.””

“Tell me.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Your father worked with Victor.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

Lucian looked away.

“Years.””

The room spun.

Years.

My father.

The man who taught me honesty.

The man who told me numbers never lied.

The man who built my entire moral compass.

Working with Victor Vale.

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Lucian’s voice was quiet.

“Because he thought he could control the damage.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you understand your father.””

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

Lucian took a breath.

“Your father believed the system was already corrupted. He believed exposing Victor would only replace one powerful criminal with another.””

“So he joined him?””

“He infiltrated him.””

Adrian laughed.

“That’s what Lucian tells himself.””

Lucian’s eyes moved toward him.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

His voice grew colder.

“Your father wanted power.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“You never knew him.””

The words hurt because they came from the one person I didn’t want to doubt.

“He hid things from you.””

I looked down.

That was true.

“He built relationships with dangerous people.””

Also true.

“He made deals.””

I closed my eyes.

Stop.

But my mind kept going.

Because truth didn’t care about what hurt.

It only cared about what happened.

“What deal?””

Nobody answered.

I looked up.

“What deal did my father make?””

Lucian looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

“There was a ledger.””

My heart started racing.

“A ledger?””

Lucian nodded.

“Your father kept records.””

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

He looked at the photograph.

“Payments. Names. Agreements.””

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“But why hide it?””

Lucian’s voice lowered.

“Because the ledger contained more than Victor’s crimes.””

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“What else?””

Lucian looked directly at me.

“Your father’s.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“You’re saying my father was guilty?””

Lucian didn’t answer.

And somehow that was worse.

Adrian stepped closer.

“He was.””

I turned on him.

“You don’t get to enjoy this.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked almost ashamed.

“I don’t.””

That surprised me.

“I hated him.””

A pause.

“But not because he was evil.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

“Because he ruined my family.””

The answer came quietly.

“My father lost everything because of him.””

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian looked at Lucian.

“Tell her.””

Lucian didn’t move.

“Tell her what happened.””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Finally, Lucian spoke.

“Victor and your father had a partnership.””

I listened.

“Your father discovered Victor was planning something bigger. Something that would hurt thousands of people.””

“What?””

“He tried to stop him.””

“And failed?””

“No.””

Lucian looked at the floor.

“He succeeded.””

I frowned.

“Then why is everyone acting like he betrayed everyone?””

“Because stopping Victor came with a cost.””

“What cost?””

Lucian looked at me.

“Your father destroyed evidence.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“Because the evidence also exposed innocent people.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Or because it exposed himself.””

The two men stared at each other.

And I finally understood.

They weren’t arguing about what happened.

They were arguing about why.

My father had done something.

Something dangerous.

Something complicated.

But the truth was buried under years of anger and revenge.

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

This time, nobody stopped me.

A voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had spent my childhood hearing it.

The voice that read me stories.

The voice that comforted me when I cried.

The voice that told me everything would be okay.

“Elena.””

My knees almost gave out.

“Dad?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The voice continued.

“I’m sorry.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I don’t have much time.””

“Where are you?””

“Elena, listen to me.””

My hand shook.

“No. You listen to me.””

My voice broke.

“You were alive.””

Silence.

“I waited for you.””

Another pause.

“I know.””

The pain in those two words almost destroyed me.

“Why?””

My voice became smaller.

“Why did you leave me?””

The answer came quietly.

“Because if I came back, they would have killed you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who?””

A long silence.

Then:

“The person who betrayed me.””

I looked at Lucian.

Then Adrian.

“Who?””

My father’s voice lowered.

“Someone you trust.””

The line crackled.

“Someone standing close enough to protect you.””

My heart stopped.

“Dad…”

“I need you to hear me.””

His voice became urgent.

“The ledger isn’t the evidence.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The ledger is the trap.””

The room went silent.

My father continued.

“The real evidence was hidden somewhere only you could find.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where you first learned to count.””

My mind raced.

The first place I learned numbers.

The first place my father taught me accounting.

The first place he showed me how patterns revealed truth.

Our old house.

The room.

The desk.

The wooden box.

Before I could respond, my father whispered:

“Elena…”

The fear in his voice changed everything.

“What?””

“Run.””

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And suddenly every security alarm in the house began screaming.

Daniel looked toward the window.

His face drained of color.

“What?””

He pointed outside.

A single car had stopped beyond the gate.

One person stepped out.

Nobody else.

No weapons.

No guards.

Just one man walking toward the house.

Lucian looked at him.

And for the first time all night…

Lucian Moretti looked afraid.

“Who is that?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

The man walking toward us was older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakable.

Victor Vale.

The dead man who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

He stopped outside the house.

Looked directly at me.

And smiled.

Like he had been waiting eight years for this moment.

Then the front door opened.

May you like

And Victor Vale said:

“Elena, I think it’s time you learned what your father really did.””
