Chapter 5: The Stranger Living in My Father’s House

The road to my childhood home felt longer than it should have.

Eight years ago, I had left that house carrying a cardboard box filled with my father’s old notebooks, a few photographs, and the kind of grief that made every room feel impossible to enter.

I remembered standing in the driveway after the funeral.

I remembered looking at the windows.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Like somehow my father would appear behind the glass and tell me everything had been a mistake.

But he never did.

The house was sold six months later.

At least, that was what I believed.

Now I was sitting in the back of a black SUV with Lucian Moretti beside me, driving toward the place where I had buried the last pieces of my old life.

And someone had been living there.

Someone who wanted me to come back.

My hands were cold.

Not from fear.

From anticipation.

For years, I had wondered if my father left something behind.

A letter.

A message.

Anything.

But I never imagined he left a secret.

A dangerous one.

Lucian noticed me staring out the window.

“You haven’t spoken in ten minutes.””

I didn’t look at him.

“I’m thinking.””

“About?””

“My father.””

His expression softened slightly.

“You miss him.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

The answer came before I could stop it.

“I miss him every day.””

The city lights disappeared behind us as we moved into quieter streets.

“He was the only person who believed I could do anything.””

Lucian looked forward.

“He sounds like a good man.””

“He was.””

A pause.

Then I added:

“That’s why this doesn’t make sense.””

“What doesn’t?””

“If he knew something dangerous… if someone was after him…”

My voice became quieter.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Lucian didn’t answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was careful.

“Maybe he was trying to protect you.””

I looked at him.

“By lying?””

“Sometimes people think hiding the truth is the same as protecting someone.””

I looked away.

I hated that I understood.

Because I had spent years angry at my father for leaving.

Now I had to consider that maybe he hadn’t left willingly.

The SUV slowed.

Lucian’s security team followed behind us in another vehicle.

I noticed.

“You said I should go alone.””

“Yes.””

“But you brought backup.””

“I changed my mind.””

I looked at him.

“That happens often?””

“No.””

A small silence.

Then:

“Only when someone I care about might be walking into danger.””

The words caught me off guard.

I turned toward him.

Lucian seemed to realize what he had said.

His expression remained calm, but something shifted in his eyes.

I looked away first.

Because I didn’t know what to do with kindness anymore.

Not after Adrian.

Not after today.

The car stopped.

My childhood home appeared at the end of the street.

And my heart nearly stopped.

It looked exactly the same.

The white paint.

The old oak tree in the front yard.

The porch where my father used to sit every Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and a newspaper.

But there was one difference.

A light was on upstairs.

Someone was home.

Lucian stepped out first.

I followed.

The air smelled like rain.

Like the night before a storm.

“This is where you grew up?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at the house.

“What do you remember?””

I smiled sadly.

“My father fixing everything himself because he refused to pay anyone else.””

A small laugh escaped me.

“He once spent three days repairing a broken sink.””

Lucian looked at me.

“Three days?””

“He said hiring a plumber was admitting defeat.””

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

The wedding.

Adrian.

The lies.

I was just a daughter remembering her father.

Then the front door opened.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

A figure stood in the doorway.

A man.

Older.

Holding a flashlight.

Lucian immediately moved in front of me.

The man raised his hands.

“Wait.””

His voice shook.

“Elena?””

My breath caught.

How did he know my name?

“Who are you?””

The man stepped into the light.

And I froze.

Because I knew him.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

The wrinkles around his eyes.

The scar near his eyebrow.

The familiar sadness in his face.

Then he said the one sentence that made my entire world collapse.

“Your father told me you would come back one day.””

I couldn’t move.

Lucian’s hand subtly moved behind him.

Ready.

“Identify yourself,” Lucian said.

The man looked at him.

Then his expression changed.

Recognition.

“Lucian Moretti.””

The man sighed.

“I was wondering when you would finally get involved.””

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“You know me?””

“I knew your father.””

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

My father.

Again.

Always my father.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man looked at me.

“My name is Daniel Ross.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way he looked at me did.

Like he had been carrying a message for years.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel glanced at the house.

“Because someone had to protect what your father left behind.””

I stepped closer.

“What did he leave?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation made me angry.

“I’m tired of people hiding things from me.””

His expression softened.

“You have every right to be.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked toward Lucian.

Then back at me.

“Your father discovered the Vale family was involved in illegal financial operations.””

I already knew that.

But hearing it from someone connected to my father made it real.

“He tried to expose them.””

My stomach tightened.

“And they killed him.””

Daniel looked down.

“They tried.””

The world stopped.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Lucian’s expression changed.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your father survived the crash.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

“Elena…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, I saw his body.””

The memory came rushing back.

The hospital.

The funeral.

The flowers.

The empty chair at my graduation.

Daniel’s face filled with pain.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“Your father survived long enough to understand that the people responsible would come after you next.””

My voice broke.

“He was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was worse than anything.

“Where is my father?””

A long silence.

Then:

“He disappeared.””

The anger came instantly.

“Disappeared?””

My hands curled into fists.

“My father didn’t disappear.””

I stepped closer.

“People disappear when they have a choice.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“He didn’t have a choice.””

“Then where is he?””

Daniel looked toward the house.

“Before he left, he hid something here.””

“What?””

“The evidence.””

My heart started racing.

“The evidence that could destroy the Vales?””

“Yes.””

Lucian stepped forward.

“What evidence?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Everything.””

A pause.

“Every transaction. Every name. Every person who helped them.””

Lucian’s expression darkened.

“And your father trusted you with this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then why are you here?””

“Because I was supposed to give it to Elena.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“When?””

Daniel looked at me.

“On her wedding day.””

The words were so strange that I almost laughed.

“What?””

“Your father left instructions.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out an old envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not typed.

Handwritten.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

My knees nearly gave out.

“No…”

I touched the envelope.

The world around me disappeared.

Eight years.

Eight years since I saw that handwriting.

Eight years since I heard his voice.

Lucian watched silently.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“He said if Adrian Vale ever tried to marry you, it meant they had discovered something.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father knew Adrian was dangerous.””

The envelope shook in my hands.

“But why wait until my wedding day?””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the house.

“Because your father believed Adrian would never reveal his true intentions unless he thought he had already won.””

I stared at the envelope.

The cruelest part was that my father had been right.

Adrian had waited.

He had smiled.

He had planned.

And he had destroyed himself by believing he had defeated me.

Slowly, I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

My father’s handwriting.

My heart broke before I even finished reading.

*Elena, if you are reading this, Adrian Vale has already betrayed you. Do not trust him. Do not trust anyone from the Vale family. And most importantly… do not trust the man who comes to save you.*

I stopped.

My fingers went numb.

Lucian noticed my expression.

“What does it say?””

I looked up slowly.

The man who had saved me.

The man who had stood beside me.

The man my father somehow knew would come.

And for the first time since meeting Lucian Moretti…

I felt afraid of him.

Because my father’s final warning wasn’t about Adrian.

It wasn’t about the Vales.

It was about the man standing beside me.

I looked at Lucian.

May you like

And whispered:

“My father warned me about you.””
