Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Left Behind
The line went silent.
For a few seconds, I could only hear Adrian’s breathing.
Slow.
Calm.
Almost amused.
Like he was enjoying the fact that I was standing in the middle of a nightmare he created.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“How did you get this number?””
A soft laugh came from the other end.
“Really, Elena? That’s your first question?””
My eyes moved toward Lucian.
He was standing near the entrance, watching me carefully.
Not interfering.
Not taking the phone away.
Waiting.
That was something Adrian never did.
Adrian always wanted control of the conversation.
Lucian seemed to understand that sometimes people revealed more when they believed they were winning.
“You’re scared,” I said.
A pause.
Then Adrian laughed.
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“I’m disappointed.””
“Disappointed?””
“Yes.””
The confidence in his tone was almost impressive.
Almost.
“You always were smarter than everyone gave you credit for. I thought you would figure out what was happening before today.””
My jaw tightened.
“You mean before you humiliated me?””
“I mean before you became a problem.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
A problem.
That was all I was to him.
A complication.
A loose end.
“What happened, Adrian?””
“What?””
“You spent a year pretending to love me. You convinced everyone I was your future. You destroyed my company. You framed me.””
My voice shook, but I didn’t let it break.
“Why?””
Silence.
Then his answer came.
“Because your father was smarter than he should have been.””
My heart stopped.
Lucian’s expression changed.
He heard it too.
“Leave my father out of this.””
“I can’t.””
Adrian sounded almost tired.
“Your father started this.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
His voice sharpened.
“Your father discovered something that was never meant to be discovered.””
The room felt colder.
“What?””
Another pause.
Then:
“You really don’t know.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was realization.
Adrian sounded genuinely surprised.
And somehow, that scared me more.
“You have spent all this time chasing numbers and documents, but you never found the one thing your father protected.””
I looked at Lucian.
He gave a small nod.
Keep him talking.
“So tell me,” I said.
Adrian chuckled.
“You think I’m going to explain everything?””
“No.””
I walked slowly toward the window.
“I think you’re going to talk because you want me to feel afraid.””
Silence.
“You always did that.””
I continued.
“You wanted people to believe you were powerful. You wanted everyone to think they needed you.””
My voice became steadier.
“But powerful people don’t need to destroy women at their wedding to prove anything.””
For the first time, Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Good.
I had found the place where his confidence cracked.
Then he spoke.
“You really think Lucian Moretti is your hero?””
I glanced at Lucian.
“No.””
That surprised Adrian.
“No?””
“No.””
I looked at the man standing across the room.
“I think everyone has secrets.””
Lucian’s eyes shifted slightly.
“But at least I know Lucian’s secrets are dangerous.””
I paused.
“Yours were hidden behind a smile.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
Then Adrian whispered:
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
“Then explain.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Because he was afraid.
Not of me.
Of what would happen if the truth came out.
“I’ll give you until midnight,” Adrian said.
“For what?””
“To bring me what your father left behind.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“And if I don’t?””
Another pause.
Then:
“You’ll find out how many people are willing to believe a thief deserves what happens next.””
The call ended.
I lowered the phone.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Lucian said, “He’s nervous.””
I looked at him.
“You sound certain.””
“I am.””
“How?””
“Because confident men don’t offer deadlines.””
I thought about Adrian’s voice.
The way he tried to sound in control.
The way he avoided answering simple questions.
Lucian was right.
But that didn’t make me feel better.
“What did my father leave behind?””
Lucian walked toward the desk.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
“We?””
His eyes met mine.
“Yes.””
I crossed my arms.
“You’re assuming I’m working with you.””
“No.””
That answer again.
“No?””
“No.””
He placed the tablet on the desk.
“I’m assuming you want the truth.””
I hated that he was right.
Because despite everything, despite the fear and confusion, one thing was clear.
I needed answers.
About Adrian.
About my father.
About the years I spent believing a lie.
A sudden crash came from outside.
Everyone in the room froze.
Then another.
Glass breaking.
Lucian’s security team immediately moved.
“Boss.””
The man at the door reached for his weapon.
My body reacted before my mind did.
I stepped back.
Lucian noticed.
“Stay here.””
I almost laughed.
“Again with the orders?””
His eyes met mine.
“This time, it’s a request.””
That stopped me.
Because his voice had changed.
Not commanding.
Concerned.
The difference was small.
But I noticed.
Of course I noticed.
The security team moved through the mansion.
Lucian stayed near me.
“You don’t have to protect me.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you standing here?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because someone has been trying to take everything from you for years.””
A pause.
“And I’m tired of watching people get away with it.””
Before I could respond, one of his men rushed back.
“Boss.””
Lucian turned.
“What happened?””
The man looked uneasy.
“They’re gone.””
“Gone?””
“Yes.””
“Who were they?””
The man hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
Lucian’s expression hardened.
“They left something.””
He handed Lucian a small envelope.
My heart dropped.
“Another message?””
Lucian opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
He stared at it.
Then his eyes moved to me.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Lucian.””
Slowly, he handed me the photo.
I looked down.
And every part of my body went cold.
It was my father.
But not from eight years ago.
The photo was recent.
Impossible.
My fingers trembled.
“This…”
My voice disappeared.
Lucian watched me carefully.
“Your father died eight years ago.””
I looked at the picture again.
A man stood outside a building.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakable.
My father.
Alive.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Lucian took the photo back.
“I thought so too.””
I looked at him.
“What does this mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
And for the first time since meeting him, I saw something rare.
Uncertainty.
The man who seemed prepared for everything had no explanation.
My phone buzzed again.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
That was all.
*If you want to know why your father disappeared, come alone.*
Below it was an address.
An address I recognized.
My childhood home.
The house my father and I sold after his death.
The house that had been empty for eight years.
I looked up.
“I have to go there.””
Lucian immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“I need answers.””
“It’s a trap.””
“I know.””
“Then why would you go?””
I stared at the photo.
Because if there was even a one percent chance my father had survived…
If there was even a possibility that everything I knew was wrong…
I had to know.
“Because he’s my father.””
Lucian was silent.
I expected him to argue.
Instead, he said:
“I’m coming with you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Elena.””
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“If someone wanted you there, they wanted you there. If they see you, they’ll run.””
“They won’t.””
“How do you know?””
His expression darkened.
“Because whoever sent that message knows exactly who I am.””
I stared at him.
“And they still invited me.””
The meaning settled between us.
Whoever was behind this wasn’t afraid of Lucian Moretti.
That was impossible.
Or maybe…
They were more dangerous than everyone thought.
Lucian picked up his coat.
“We leave in five minutes.””
I looked at him.
“You’re not asking?””
“No.””
I raised an eyebrow.
“Interesting.””
A faint expression crossed his face.
“Neither are you.””
I almost smiled.
Almost.
But then I looked down at the photo again.
My father.
Alive.
A secret hidden for eight years.
A truth someone had killed to protect.
And suddenly, the wedding disaster that had destroyed my life felt like only the first move in a much larger game.
As we walked toward the car, Lucian’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed within seconds.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then his voice became colder.
“Are you sure?””
I watched him.
“What is it?””
He ended the call.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked at me.
“Elena.””
Something about his expression made my blood run cold.
“What?””
His answer came quietly.
“The house we’re going to…”
A pause.
“It wasn’t abandoned.””
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
Lucian looked toward the dark road ahead.
“Someone has been living there.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
His eyes met mine.
May you like
And the words that followed changed everything.
“Someone who has been waiting for you to come home.””
